#TheDiplomat S4E7: sumptuous filming with an almost unbelievable first shot, glorious locations, compelling narrative, exceptional dialogue, pitch-perfect performances - this + #SlowHorses S6E6, seen last night, are among the very best recent episodes of great television (if we still call it that).

Also very impressed by how this series of #TheDiplomat is dealing, obliquely, with Tr*mp, as President Penn is acting unpredictably, rashly, angrily, vindictively and without consideration, and all those around her are having to manage this as best they can.

Today's event featured wonderful tributes from family and friends and filmmakers, including many who he had encouraged as young directors and championed: Stanley Kwan (and there was a glorious clip featuring Tony as actor from 'Hold You Tight', 1998)...

... Tsai Ming-liang, Midi Z, Wang XiaoShuai, Jia ZhangKe, a hilarious contribution from Bong Joon Ho, and perhaps most touching of all, a short film with clouds with and by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Go well, Tony.

When I started working on the magazine in 1977 he was welcoming and kind and generous, even though it was clear that I knew next to nothing and had distinctly eccentric tastes - I shudder now to recall trying to convince him of the greatness of Ken Russell...

My schedule is all over the place, but here's a collection of interesting articles that I might have contributed on Sunday. The somewhat seasonal, socialist realist image is ‘Grain for the State’, 1953, by Viktor Karrus, seen recently in Tallinn's KUMU. www.illuminationsmedia.co.uk/another-catc...

Does anyone else find the new @artfund.bsky.social poster campaign for National Art Pass weird? "This gave my brain the afternoon off"! Are we not supposed to think in galleries? Are we being encouraged simply to look at art in an empty-headed manner?

Rarely agree w Jonathan Jones, and I haven't seen the show, but this feels like a necessary piece: "This is not a real exhibition. It’s a magazine spread. Not only are there style mags in the show, its design has the breathless superficiality of a glossy layout." www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...
