The "corner store" comment reminded me of this scene with my mother who also has dementia. I made the comic at a Friday Night Comics workshop--five minutes per panel! I like how it turned out. I stopped making comics when life's traumas started overwhelming me. I hope to get back to it soon. #comics

Thank you! My daughter made me a cake* and I made a wish. Then both daughters sang to me. I am very grateful to everyone who has donated, shared my link, and offered kind words. Thank you all. *everyone reuses birthday candles, right?

Hi friends. Today is my birthday. It's a big one. This year has been so hard, and it's not over. I am so grateful to everyone who has donated/shared my link. I am still fighting my way out of this very bad situation. Thank you for considering helping me & my daughters.

Seeing this Brueghel the Younger painting this morning sent me in search of a self portrait I did years ago. I was pretty sure I'd posted it on my old blog. Turns out I did but as a tangent to a post about this cool art book I made back then. It's kinda like a fiber comic. #Art #SelfPortrait #Comics

Pieter Brueghel the Younger, The Yawner (or Man with Open Mouth), 1564

The Brueghel reminded me of my self portrait, but memory is faulty: I thought I had my mouth open in a scream in the drawing, but I actually drew myself gritting my teeth. Oh well. It made for the fun rediscovery of this moment of creativity. #ArtOfBluesky

My dad loved movies & movie stars. He loved that Julie Newmar was in his yoga classes in Los Angeles. Weirdly, Robert Cummings is the first famous person I ever saw. My dad spotted him & had toddler me get a wave from him. My dad also loved Chopin. I miss him.

As well as being a famous Hollywood actress JULIE NEWMAR — still with us aged 93 — was also a patented inventor, real estate magnet & classically trained concert Pianist. Here she is playing a bit of Chopin on the TV show ‘My Living Doll’ in 1964.

My younger daughter is a birder extraordinaire. She can spot a warbler from a moving car. On a neighborhood walk this morning, by chance I spotted something first and was able to guide her and my older daughter to a lifer for them: a red-breasted nuthatch. 📷 credit in alt text #Birds #Nature

My daughter, who is on the spectrum, has been accepted as a transfer to a state school to finish her BA, which has been her dream since things got derailed during covid. I hope to cover the $250 she needs to send by Nov 1st along with her commitment to attend. Thank you for considering helping us.

My daughter was happy to connect with Ryka at the LA Book Festival a few years ago. Here's a panel from the diary comic I made about the day.

One of the best things to happen to me is getting to meet and be friends with @rykaaoki.bsky.social and @amerrill2.bsky.social. I know you think they are great, talented and hilarious, and they are. But they are also amazing friends. I adore them and am glad they let me hang out with them.

One or both of these...

Uh oh. I asked my 20-something daughters, and they have not heard of Bob Seger. I even did my best impersonation, singing a greatest hits medley. At least they've heard of Stephen Graham Jones. [Repost because I spelled it like Pete Seeger first. Yeah, I'm turning in my parenting card.]

By beat, I mean I'm beaten. I know this is a hell the road to which was paved by my own good intentions. I'm incredibly grateful that kind and generous people have been willing to help me and my daughters survive. Thank you all.

My brother tortured dad to death. I risked all to protect mom who has dementia from same fate. No match for his sociopathy. He now lives w/ her, preventing me from seeing her & being in family home. Can't find work. Being evicted. Trying to keep life okay for daughters, both on spectrum. I'm beat.

Not "historical" but... The Graduate 1967 Anne Bancroft b. 1931 = 36 Dustin Hoffman b. 1937 = 30 Katharine Ross b. 1940 = 27 Mrs. Robinson (Anne, 36) says to Benjamin (Dustin, 30), "I'm twice your age." Anne, 36, plays Katharine's, 27 mother. Dustin plays the titular college graduate at 30.

Kind of a dumb one, but my daughters & I enjoy The Big Year and would love to see it with a female cast. So, topically, I'll pick the cast of 9 to 5, with Jane Fonda playing Steve Martin's role, Dolly Parton playing Jack Black's role, and Lily Tomlin playing Owen Wilson's role.

P.S. If you watch it, you have to watch the version narrated by John Cleese, not the one narrated by Jack Black (which, sadly, I think was the commercially released version).

Heh. #wrongtakeaway I read this and thought, "Wow, they make five different sizes of chocolate eyeballs? That's commitment to the bit." The following paragraph (not shown here) clears it up: five different size *packages* of eyeballs. Oh well, a girl can dream. 🎃👁️🍫

Also a single mom, I had a one year old and a home daycare. It wasn't until the first mom came to pick up her baby that afternoon and said, "You don't know what's happened, do you?" that I heard about it. I waited until after I put my baby to bed that night before I turned on the news.

I swear I remember whichever newscaster it was (Peter Jennings?) seeing flags start to sprout warning us not to go all in for jingoistic nationalism, and by the next day, such comments were forever banished.

One of the times my mom visited me in college. It was the first I'd heard of polar vortex. She has dementia now, otherwise I would ask her what the hell is in that bag & did she really drag it all over New York?!

This reminds me of going to PS1 Museum in the previous century, before their renovations & merger, when you'd walk down the hall, see an abandoned piece of rusty equipment and a shredded extension cord and wonder if it was part of the art installation. Ah, the good old days. #Art

Glue this all together, call it “Bouquet,” and put it in the art museum.
