On Saturday, 17 October the Department organised a panel on The Role of Civil Society and International Organisations in Peacemaking as part of the @aberuni.bsky.social alumni weekend and to mark the centenary of the meeting of the International Federation of the League of Nations in Aberystwyth.
This week's speaker at the International Politics Research Seminar was @andreawarnecke.bsky.social from Leiden University, whose presentation (Claiming Impartiality: Peacebuilding Organizations as Actors in Multiple Fields of Global Governance) was based on her recently published book.
It was a great pleasure to see @andreawarnecke.bsky.social back in Aber (shown here with Prof Berit Bliesemann de Guevara during the Q&A), where she did a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship and much of the research for the book. The book is available on open access: press.umich.edu/Books/C/Clai...

The guest speaker series in the module Behind the Headlines continued this week with @christopherjm.ft.com who reports from #Ukraine for @financialtimes.com. Chris joined online from Kyiv and shared insights from some of the stories he has covered during the war.
On Saturday we welcomed visitors to the @aberuni.bsky.social Open Day. Academic staff and student ambassadors were based at the department's stand in MedRus, along with the other departments in the humanities faculty.
Last night @terezacapelos.bsky.social delivered a truly memorable EH Carr Memorial Lecture, sharing insights from her research into emotions and politics. Her fascinating talk focused on the dynamics that can turn grievance in a direction that undermines democracy.
Further, @terezacapelos.bsky.social identified possible pathways back from the cycle of envy, resentment and hatred. She then responded very thoughtfully to the many questions asked by staff, students and members of the local community who attended. 👏👏👏

The first year module Behind the Headlines got off to a great start yesterday, with our own Dr Gillian McFadyen as the first in the module's guest speaker series, offering thoughtful and thought-provoking comments on refugees, asylum seekers and migrants and the way that they are framed by UK media.
