Today is #WDPD25 asking "Why Preserve?" UCD Digital Preservation Librarian Niamh Murphy is (virtually) at this yr's @ipres2025.bsky.social in Wellington, NZ. The weaving of Māori tradition into the conference is a reminder that #digitalpreservation is all about people.

ICPSR lightning talk at #iPRES2025 on safeguarding public data in a challenging political lifecycle. Fantastic work as days stewards while we witness the erosion of public data in the US

How to prioritise audio visual material for preservation
1. Magnetic tape!!
2. Reacting to a disaster and the damage caused

More gratification - so great to hear of people using @wikidatacommunity.bsky.social for digital preservation signature metadata. I just heard mention of using the Wikidata signature file in Siegfried! #ipres2025

Great talk from @archivistkelsey.bsky.social on accessibility of born digital collections. She discusses the implicit, systemic, and unconscious biases built into hardware and software which can negatively impact users, and encourages us to prioritise the humanity of workers and users #ipres2025
Now: Keynote - Encountering Collapse: Power, Community, and the Future of Infrastructure. Rosalyn Metz, CTO, Emory University.
The field of public relations traced back to Freud(?). 1920s. There's a documentary about this.
#iPRES2025
I've been to 1.5 iPRES radio sessions today and it has been great (as a virtual attendee in the UK) to have an opportunity to connect and chat with others about iPRES. Also I had an opportunity to talk about mine and @bryonyhooper.bsky.social's poster www.dpconline.org/events/event...#ipres2025

Really interested in the Fedora story shared by Rosalyn Metz at #iPRES2025. I knew bits of it (the challenge of migrating from version 3 to 4) but haven't heard it in full before. Lots of useful lessons to learn from this around the importance of community over technology.

Ooph, this hit home.
Rosslyn Metz from Emory university's keynote gives a lot of food for thought.
Is openness always good? Should we reconsider our openness in a world focused on exploitation?

NEW: Common Crawl, the massive archiver of the web, has gotten cozy with AI companies and is providing paywalled articles for training data. They’re also lying to publishers who have asked for material to be removed. “The robots are people too,” CC’s exec director told us when we asked about this.

How many formats are there?

So great to hear about the use of #AusEaaSI / #EaaSI in Australia. Hearing how it is also really useful for raising awareness of digital preservation is validating. Reminds me of my post on Digital Patinas www.dpconline.org/blog/wdpd/th...#ipres2025

National Digital Preservation Services Finland share a key point on the slide grabbed... "Collaboration is the Key to success".
They provide a digital preservation service to a range of partners, and so pre ingest tools (such as ones that provide validation and quality assurance)

Just attended a really fun virtual Birds of a Feather session at #ipres2025 with Sean Macmillan on digital preservation games. He says "Anyone can build a game". I've left feeling enthused and keen to give it a go! Not sure when I'm going to fit that in exactly...perhaps WDPD next year!
