#splcensus #splcensus2026 Below is a word cloud with the 50 most used words when people were asked to describe their Splatoon related goals. (common words like "the" "get" "just" etc were removed) It is probably gonna take us a while to get to more charts but I really wanted to post this :)

Splatoon Community Census 2026! Last year the form got over 1000 responses and gave some great insight into the community! This year's census will continue in its goal of encouraging dialogue and identifying issues within the scene It takes 10 minutes to complete! 🔗 forms.gle/xqYSpB7AanqJ...

My issue with this is why is the distinction between "splatoon player" and "splatoon player who knows of grassroots activity" being made? The only real difference there is knowledge of community. Give those players an in to our scene and I'm sure many would love it if they both knew and felt welcome

to me, "comp player" is like "football player", it describes the format of play not the motivations of the player a person participating in the comp scene is unique compared to someone playing solo turf war no vc, to the point that "splatoon player" would be like calling someone a "sports player"

I think we miss the point when we ask: - "what makes a competitive player a competitive player" instead of: - "what makes the competitive community the competitive community" I think what makes the comp community a useful space for so many people goes beyond any single definition of "competitive"

What I can say: Of the 738 replies to the question "How would you define a competitive Splatoon player?" SO FAR categorised (there are over 2000 total answers), 329 (45% of the labeled set) included a "focus on improvement" in their definition THIS IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF ALL OF THE DATA SET

The census has such fucking interesting data relating to the current discussion on what even is a competitive player but the analysis of data like this just takes so long

there's a big misconception going around that if you play comp splatoon, your motivation is solely to improve, when that's simply not true for everyone remember that this is a social space and outlet for people as well, and some would prefer just having fun compared to the work it takes to improve

the take ive had for the longest time is that there are a lot of high level splatoon players who dont care about being good, they care about people THINKING they're good. they'll do anything to prevent their spotlight from being stolen and ensuring nobody ruins the facade.

I might be the best competitive Splatoon player to ever play the game if you take "play the game" to mean "look at a spreadsheet" and "competitive Spatoon player" to mean "getting other people to play the game instead of me"

I worry sometimes that I take on things that are too big for my own capacity and that they are thus destined to fail but then I think about how cool it will be when it's done (Census open-answer thematic analysis is 25% complete)

if you are a tournament organizer running high-top level tournaments, this is a golden opportunity to start incorporating winner's interviews into your events. no more fumbling an invite into your production/staff server or trying to teach a player to use vdoninja. get it done right here on sendou

Update! Voice chat is in beta (by @hfcred.dev). If you used Discord you should more or less know how this works. VC both on match & group level. We also now support YT streams in addition to Twitch. Need to have #sendouink somewhere in the title/description for the stream to be picked up.
