My least justified but held opinion about AI is that it would have gone over a lot better, even if the actual product is exactly identical with the power usage and the "stealing", if you are given a weights.bin to download and not an invitation to subscribe to a timeshare.

The important thing about the scope of national security is that it extends solely to the People's Republic of China only. If it covers any other country, then it is "overstreching".

"Are you alive?": this program halts if the answer is yes, and does not terminate otherwise. "Are you asleep?": this program halts if the answer is no, and does not terminate otherwise.

Sometimes, when certain artists and graphic designers want to make something look techy and stuff they like to put in some jargon in the surrounding fluff text, e.g. using "404" to mark something as a generic error.

Increasingly however, I find this usage annoying, partially because they usually get the semantics incorrect and also because that was an opportunity to create something new that they did not take.

Sometimes I read something, and think, "goodness, this is incomprehensible, I need to translate this into English", only to realise "wait, it's already in English, either I'm not focusing enough or the author is being obscure"

You get three points if you can nail the reference on this one, and two if you can name all the points of reference in the completed product (which is again like the last one Oops All The Same Reference)

Every time one of a large number of countries demand some law or regulation in the name of "national security", a number of threads that stuck with me come to mind. Here is one of them:-

This post is unavailable.

The ~security of a country, at some point that by now all countries have passed, diverges from the security of its people; at some level, all sovereigns realise this, but they would rather it not be, so they try their best to not think about it too hard.

Every time someone says that AI 'can only regurgitate' known facts from the training data, I get frustrated because that's just not true. Sure I can agree with the basic premise that 'AI is bad', but you must understand just how much new insight you can get by exploiting unexplored diagonals.

That's not to say that the generated words describe reality, so by all means criticise AI usage on that, or all the energy stuff, the hitting of seals &c.. I will only say that "mere regurgitation" is actually pretty intelligent, because there's already so much wisdom embedded in all writing ever.

So, even if two facts are known and are in the training data, you can still connect them in a path that no one has ever been on before, because there's just so many of them. And because language has structure that mirrors reality, the path has a good chance of describing reality too.

What do I mean? You can think of writing as finding points in a very high dimensional vector space. The thing about having so many dimensions is that you can easily traverse a path between two known points that have never been traversed before.

People in America talking about petrol prices is always funny because this is the kind of stuff I look at every day: 21274. ~ % numbat -e '23.92 HKD/l -> USD/gallon' # w/ walkin discount 11.5427 $/gal 21275. ~ % numbat -e '34.12 HKD/l -> USD/gallon' # without 16.4648 $/gal

My primary issue with AI-generated thumbnails is not so much the stealy-stealy, or even the energy consumption needed. It is on a more basic level, where when completely unrelated people use the default generation style, it gives me no information on who the author is and I discount him on that.

Idea of the now: The Chiikawa analogue in Ùzje is called SMOAMOMS, which is "Small Mammals", written in Cyrillic, ШМОМАМОМШ, and so entirely symmetric both in writing and in pronunciation!

Hot take: the name "Equal Earth Projection" is a bad name. It's like naming an economic system "Strong Welfare System Having Economics", or naming a pair of shoes "The One With The Twice-Padded Soles".

I genuinely thought that the original UN resolution was meant to be a generic statement about looking for a projection that has the area-preserving property, not an endorsement for a specific one.

In the modern day it is considered a little gauche to name something after its inventor, but I think here it is appropriate. Just stick the initials of its inventors in the usual order and it'd be much better.

I guess as someone who doesn't really use AI or play gacha games I find it pretty natural to see their moral valence as more or less comparable, which would almost certainly disappoint many who use one or the other.

But, I really don't like how the two have evolved to be part of the entertainment world that I frequent and I can't really get away from them. And the same people who get up in arms on one typically have little to no issue with the other. I guess I've become an old man.

In a related rant, some prominent talent makes a great rant about the big social costs of AI in drawing, and I'm inclined to agree, but then turns around and spends USD 500 on a sponsored gacha game she's in. Insofar as they're both a kind of mildly negative moral rot, I find this contrast annoying.

I figure it's her job, and she's paid for it (and she puts all the earned money right back into the game), and it's probably fine. It's only my own evaluation of the talent that gets revised down, and that hardly matters to her or anyone else for that matter.
