What it's like to go horribly, horribly viral. That time I incurred the wrath of a continent (and the Daily Mail). My new newsletter, Lines To Take, out now.

The problem with Kane is he isn't easily categorised. Haaland is the archetypal goalscorer, Yamal the genius creator. Kane does both and, as of last week, also takes goal kicks.

There's a reason you're handed a wine list without asking, but the dessert menu is always preceded by a question.
A bustling high street is a bit like atmosphere in a restaurant. We all want it, but we're not going to jolly well pay for it, are we?
The British syndrome, summarised: 78% of us say our high streets are important to us. But only 28% of us actually use their local high street even once a week – and only 53% of people said they used theirs *once a month*. We won't use it, and we won't lose it.

Even more chilling with moving pictures.

When to speak up? Hint: while there’s still time to do something about it. A reflection on sad hotel rooms, congealing hollandaise sauce and why Bruno Fernandes picked the worst possible moment to give feedback.

There are 1,500 (fifteen hundred) Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft on order so probably a good thing it *finally* got FAA certification to, you know, fly.
One benefit of repeatedly forgetting that John Silkin stood in the 1981 Labour deputy leadership election is that I get to experience the revelation anew every time.

Includes a bit about the last book I ever read* — a combination of words most people don’t get to write, either because it’s embarrassing or, more likely, because they’re dead. *before my conversion to orthodox audiobookism www.goodreads.com/en/book/show...

Jonathan Powell’s The New Machiavelli may be the shrewdest of the New Labour era memoirs, but *hands down* the best Trotsky reference belongs to Jack Straw. ✍️ www.linestotake.com/p/fit-for-pu...
