In my debut novel, Managed Decline ‘29, the fictional American President, Bryce Pryce The Third, is presented with a “golden” and “lifelike” statue by his Scouse counterpart, Dr Duncan Black. Here’s a concept drawing 😂 The writing is much better, I promise! amzn.eu/d/0f0U8gOt

My kid’s primary school are having officially sanctioned water fights today, organised into year groups. All the kids have brought their own water pistols in. I can’t decide if this is a stroke of genius or a recipe for disaster! 😂

Another thought: Imagine Count Binface doing a proper serious campaign. Loads of donations, door knocking, literature, volunteers, a campaign coordinator, a proper election agent etc. Proper serious infrastructure behind an unserious candidate would be just quintessentially British!

A thought: Even though Farage has said he’s going to stand down as an MP, does it involve paperwork? A letter to the Chancellor? Some form of laborious admin. I’ve just remembered that there was a huge gap between Nadine Dorries saying she was going to resign as an MP and actually doing it.

From what I’ve read, this Farage by election stunt is a complete waste of time. If he wins, the investigation into his undeclared income continues, and given how unprecedented it is, there’s every chance Parliament will give him a long enough suspension to trigger ANOTHER by election.

It will be some other no mark who will cruise to victory because the other major parties refused to engage with it. 4) Regardless of anything else, Zack Polanski grows a pair and stands for election in Clacton. I genuinely think this is less likely than Nigel doing some sort of stitch up.

2) All political parties refuse to engage with this sham and give a joke candidate like Count Binface a head to head run against Farage to expose it for the farce that it is. It might stain Parliament’s reputation but it has the added bonus of a novelty candidate actually becoming a sitting MP.

Binface asking Burnham about the price of croissants at PMQs would be hilarious! 3) Farage calls everyone’s bluff. Once the writ for the by election is served, Reform will leave it til the very last minute to submit their nomination papers BUT Nigel Farage WON’T be the candidate.

Here’s how I think things could play out, from plausible to ridiculous: 1) The Tories might stand a candidate but all progressive/left of centre parties agree to get behind one candidate from a credible party. Drop the tribal nonsense and all come together for a common good to keep Farage out.

The ref was against us. The altitude was against us. The weather was against us. We played a host nation on their own patch with 10 men and we smashed it. That was a truly outstanding performance from England! Very proud to be English this morning. Sleep? What’s sleep? 😂😂😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

This might be the first Prime Ministerial resignation I’ve actually been sad about. Keir Starmer lacked the political skills for the role, and his resignation was the right course of action, but on reflection, he’s the best PM we’ve had over the past decade by a country mile.

For me, he always seemed to be the most decent, most sensible and most patriotic. He was unpopular, but neither dishonorable like Boris, nor was he completely inept like Liz Truss. Unlike David Cameron, he wasn’t a coward who went to put his trotters up in Nice. Unlike Theresa May, he didn’t

I worry about my algorithm on several social media platforms. My Facebook feed is either nonce hunter videos or far right “content creators” armed with Meta glasses and tripods at racist rallies on Britain’s streets. My instagram feed is full of Attitude & Ruthless Aggression Era wrestling clips.

This exchange is both the very best and very worst of us. On one side: A PM, a LOTO & many decent MPs who disagree politically, but are united in dealing with this situation sensitively. On the other: A race baiting grifter who couldn’t give a toss about the grieving parents of a murdered child.

Nigel Farage is using a tragedy to score political points. Keir Starmer: "I'm really shocked that he (Farage) pretends to have respect for Henry's family and then acts in this way." Farage's "response has been to appeal for rage. That's his response to a father who's lost his son."

Tony Blair’s essay is full of contradictions that can easily be dismantled. If he wants to ditch Net Zero, why does China produce so many solar panels and electric vehicles? If AI is the future, it will require a great deal of energy consumption.

As for his views on Brexit & Immigration, they can get in the bin. Brexit especially. This last decade of low growth, reduced tax receipts, unfilled job vacancies in the NHS & hospitality etc. are a direct impact of Brexit.

The idea that Britain can grow its economy at a much faster rate without loosening the barriers to trade imposed on us by Brexit is for the birds, and he knows it. Labour will (hopefully) retreat to a more soft left position under Andy Burnham, but as of now, they’ve tried to appease the right.

With infrastructure reform, it could be geared towards Electric vehicles, charging points, green energy, power via heat pumps, more cycle lanes, solar panels on motorways etc etc. The state needs to manipulate the right conditions to allow green energy companies to thrive.

I don’t see anything radically centrist about condemning people to destitution! Further privatisation of state institutions (or what should be under state control) rarely produces an outcome that is both profitable & high in customer satisfaction.

Would it not be preferable to use green energy sources to reduce the acceleration of damage that fossil fuels do to the planet? If AI becomes so advanced that millions of people lose their jobs, how can he justify reducing welfare budgets?

Honestly… I feel like I’ve been had off here. Last week I was excited at the prospect of a potential future Prime Minister who genuinely wanted to implement PR, stand up for the North & to rejoin the EU. Today, I have buyer’s remorse.

Politics UK@politicsuk.com

🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham says he doesn’t want to rejoin the EU “Brexit has been damaging, but the last thing we need right now is to re-run those arguments”

The State Opening of Parliament and the pomp & circumstance that comes with it is a perpetual sign of how the monarchy is an outdated relic in a modern society. What’s worse is the King will have to read out a legislative programme that could be rendered completely irrelevant by the end of the day

How long do we have to wait until a Labour politician with some gravitas emerges from the shadows to challenge Keir Starmer? Will there be a Sunday pages spread? Or will the proverbial knife be wielded in Parliament?
