The thing with the Cheesecake Factory line is you have to understand that whatever you think of the food there is generally tacit agreement that the decoration is assertive, whether you think in a fancy way or a kitschy way, but further have been following current events long enough that you

remember that saddam's palace was decorated so lavishly that it was seen as proof that he was as a leader and a man absolutely deficient and further you have to have retained that knowledge for twenty-three years so that you can thread the needle from already over-the-top decor being taken too far

by a similarly deficient man who is currently redecorating our presidential palace gaudily. Could have just said "he's making the White House look like they bought out all the foam molding and gold spray paint when Joann's closed. On his watch! He lost us Joann's!"

Biden, famously surrounded by no one leveling with him as they removed him as a major party candidate from a presidential nomination he had already won? That Biden?

Josh Marshall@joshtpm.bsky.social

Put this under nature of the problem. From an axios piece by Jim Vendehei about the growing multiple risks of cascading crises. You’d say the same about Biden? Not politics? lol

Raymond, you do not want to establish a pay-as-you-go arrangement for government services or their private equivalent at 72 years of age doubly so if you're a fuckass dipshit.

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

I will see you can see everything only if the "everything" involves a locomotive crash that obliterates everyone involved.

The only reason we come out ahead in every dispute with an insurance company is that my wife, in addition to being wise and kind, has worked for a long while as a medical coder and auditor on both sides and can fight line by line and procedure code by procedure code. It doesn't have to be like this.

Max Kennerly@maxkennerly.bsky.social

I had two kids in the NICU which produced a $10k bill because two insurers both said "not me!" for 36 hours of it. I fixed it by applying the full scope of my skills as civil litigation attorney. It would've cost >$10k to hire me to do it; as a policy matter, I consider that wholly unacceptable.

I'm not a posting scold or a language cop but "I didn't know they stacked shit that high" does, in fact, remain undefeated.

I did not know a human could look like this

When I was a teenager working in a beach town supermarket we used to lose power summers sometimes and when we lost power for a few days and ALL of the refrigeration had to be emptied I quit after two days. That cleanup gonna be big funky.

A Six Flags agent running a routine task unexpectedly interacted with customers in an unapproved fashion. Six Flags responded, in part, saying, "“Although the impact of these behaviors was minimal, we have now decided to expand our internal evaluations until we catch behaviors like these."

Six Flags temporarily closed nine roller coasters across six amusement parks on Monday after one person died and several others were injured in an incident involving a coaster in Georgia.

Not gonna lie this looks like something that would hang outside a "reclaimed barn" in yakisugi and austere brown pine tar up here in the Hudson valley. Owners have great eyeglasses and are both consultants. Flagpole would have some fanciful Americana on top. Optician's eyeball sign or a Texaco star.

Clearly someone never spent a weirdly idyllic period of personal and national crisis wandering into old clothes-cupboards and coming out covered in christian allegory.

Programmers and executives at Anthropic initiated a test of their software that resulted in the commission of crimes against the government ranging from forgery to filing false police reports. They were not asked to do so by the government or by any clients or potential customers.

I think it would be okay to pillory people sometimes.

Earth 2 stuff from Tom Emmer on Fox Business. His words have almost no connection to reality.

A hilarious thing about where I live is that a lot of my suggesteds on IG are guys who were in late 80s/early 90s krshnacore bands in nyc who are now up here in their second acts as yoga instructors.

Hilariously Liberty Mutual has made worse ads as they've spent more and put more effort into it. I freelanced at the agency studio that did the original standing by the harbor with the statue in the bg ads. Literally shot in a conference room with a greenscreen hung on a wall.

probably raised awareness of the brand, which is all an agency can claim to do. But I can't imagine them driving sales (which agencies do NOT promise to do anyway). Anyways I'm not sure whose ended up being the final but another animator and I passed the endcard animation back and forth for weeks.

They weren't good per se but they were very inexpensive, took very little time and delivered the pitch quickly and without embarrassment to anyone. LM put the account in review and whoever's had it since is responsible for both iterations of biberty and the emu. Being stranger or more annoying...

That'd be an authentic L, Greco.

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

The US has withdrawn from GRECO, the Council of Europe’s anti-corruption watchdog, which it has been a member of since 2000, ABC reports. Russia and Belarus are the only other countries to have left the group.

You could also just go grocery shopping which, in my experience, has very good outcomes generally in the grocery-acquisition space. Thneed-ass software laid low by the back of an envelope and a goddamn pencil and asking errybody what they want.

hikikomorphism@hikikomorphism.bsky.social

In my experience LLMs are almost spooky good at understanding private dialects/baroque references/etc - you'd need to put them in some kind of "ask questions and learn" mode to start, but once they write a memory block or two about your ideal shopping outcomes, they'd be pretty good at this

I'm not saying the mystery of the tripartite god is an easy one to contemplate but at the very least it made me very aware of one thing. When they came for him and tortured him to death, despite being god, with powers, Christ didn't fight back. He is not a "muscular" Christ in any way.

Radley Balko@radleybalko.bsky.social

“Muscular Christianity” means that when when you’re glazing the serial predator president who deports refugee children, executes fishermen, and builds idols to himself, you TYPE REALLY HARD.

If I hear someone say "I'm a grown ass man and..." I prepare myself to hear a hilarious illustration of how that is untrue.

Interview is a two way stream of information and I think I'd be happy to know if doing something I thought was normal and ok was going to raise eyebrows. I mean, I make sure to use the restroom, have a look at the kitchen and notice the windows. You better have cleaned, buddy. And I am judging.

Kai Ryssdal@kairyssdal.bsky.social

I’m sorry, but if you bring an iced coffee - or any damn beverage at all - to a job interview, you’re disqualified. It’s not hard, people.

Typically and hilariously for someone who works in TV I have not seen a complete episode of 73 of the 100 but the other 27 were pretty good.

I’ve seen 64 of the NYT’s best 100 TV shows of the 21st century. And don’t really disagree with the inclusion of any of those. That’s a good hit rate.

To David's point; yesterday we had to put our sweet elderly mom dog down. It was absolutely the right thing to do but it was of course horrible and I cried. And then, as I told a work pal offering condolences...

I'm under no illusions about how things are or what the trajectory is. But I'm also excited for the future because that is where I will hang out with the people I care about and do the things I like doing, or haven't done before. Weird but telling that this holds less appeal for much richer people.

I was at a party in a small town when I was in high school and it was the first time I ever saw people drinking like they were mad at themselves. A couple were sitting making out, tremendously drunk, at a table. The fella leaned, spewed and spit and went back in for more kissing and

This is the David Foster Wallace "this is water" thing. It's an expression of privilege of course, but I think it's totally possible to never feel the larger trends as anything more than tidal motion and only react to acute affects to your own life.
