We interrupt this Spooky Season to remind you that ~Bovember~ is starting soon! It’s the cowiest season of all~ I’ve made myself a prompt list this year – join along if you like! Or just draw whatever cows your heart desires 🐄❤️ #Bovember #Bovember2026 #cows #cowart #artchallenge #illustration

She’s not a witch, this is just how she makes soup. #mouse #spooky #watercolor #soup #illustration #coloredpencil #animalart #mouseart #rodents #spookyseason #autumnal #witchy

Mrs. Rabbit has had her paws full ever since Mr. McGregor baked her husband in to a pie. Lately neighbors have seen her down past the berry patch, where the deadly nightshade grows. I’m sure she’s just clearing it up so her little ones don’t accidentally eat any! #rabbit #beatrixpotter #nightshade

Unicorns don’t seem to think much of the after life, or the concept of vengeful spirits - but what of the softer kinds of hauntings? With such a strong love of herd and home shown in life, might they not wish to watch over those things even after they’re gone? #unicorns #ghost #spooky #rat #forest

There is a reason they recommend keeping bottled spirits in a locked cabinet – pretty as they look on an open shelf, they are absolute magnets for curious familiars. (I’m busy packing up Kickstarter rewards so enjoy some oldies from the back catalog!) #griffon #blackcat #spooky #fantasyart #ghosts

I hear it's Bawktober? Boktober? Draw chickens month? Anyway, here's a chicken! #bawktober #chicken #coloredpencils #sketchbook #chickenart

Doodling horses~ #horses #sketchbook #sketching #doodles #horseart #equineart #animalart #illustration #coloredpencils

It rained today! My shoes are wet! The sky is grey! I am sipping a pumpkin-flavored drink! Go and pat yourself and your neighborhood scarecrow on the back, folks, we did it - it’s Fall! #unicorns #SpookySeason #scarecrow #goldenrod #autumn #mythicalcreatures

Is that a stirring in the air I feel?* (*70% chance of rain next week, perhaps the summoning is working?? 🥹) #unicorns #autumn #unicornart #fallleaves #watercolor #illustration

Rain, rain, come and stay, we’re going to have a dramatic fight today~ #unicorns #unicornart #watercolor #illustration #rain #drama #mythicalcreatures #fantasyart #equineart

Don’t mind me, I’m just going to start up my yearly tradition of desperately trying to summon the fall weather with unicorns. Please, please, please, some rain? Some cool weather? There are leaves on the ground, but I think that’s because the trees are going crispy… #fall #autumn #unicorns #art

Doodling with kiddy markers - it's fun to just play around with some bold colors every once in a while~ #markers #doodling #animalart #dragonart #catart #drawing #limitedcolor #lines

The last few sketch pages~ #coloredpencils #thumbnails #sketchbook #artprocess #colorstudies #dragons #dragonart #illustration #mythicalcreatures #fantasyart

Dragons, dragons, dragons... #coloredpencils #thumbnails #sketchbook #artprocess #colorstudies #dragons #dragonart #illustration #mythicalcreatures #fantasyart

Even more sketch pages from the dragon commissions - I really like drawing dragons with looooooong snoots. #art #artprocess #sketchbook #colorstudies #thumbnaildrawing #coloredpencils #dragons #fantasyart #illustration

More sketch pages from the dragon commissions - I love doing color studies, they look so cute in the sketchbook. #art #artprocess #sketchbook #colorstudies #thumbnaildrawing #dragons #dragonart #illustration

It’s been a lovely Smaugust, but as September nears it seems the age dragons is ebbing away~ (actually, I can’t quite fit all these dragon sketchbook pages in one post, so the age of dragons might hang around a bit…) #smaugust #smaugust2026 #dragons #sketchbook #artprocess #colorstudies #thumbnails

The introverted, self-amusing tendencies of young lung dragons may seem to make them the perfect companions, but potential owners should know that providing for their book allowance can become absolutely financially crippling in just a few short decades. #smaugust #smaugust2026 #dragons #cats #art

Enticing an owl dragon into your yard may sound fun, but know this little lady plans to fill up that nest box she’s found with her prized hoard of dead mice. Owl dragons only keep the bones, fur, teeth and whiskers of the mice, though, so it’s not as smelly as you might fear. #smaugust #smaugust2026

Many people have had the thought of harnessing dragon flight for transportation, but when you calculate in the number of refreshment breaks the average dragon will demand on any given journey, it’s often faster to walk. #smaugust #smaugust2026 #dragons #coloredpencils #illustration #teatime #art

When they tell you to put rocks carefully back in place while exploring tidepools, it is mostly to keep the little ecosystems healthy – be aware, however, that it is also a precaution against tide-pool hoarding sea-dragons, because, trust me, they will KNOW if their rocks are out of place. #smaugust

While all dragons might wish to be the fearsome and covetous wyrms of legend, at the end of the day some of them are just little guys dreaming sweet dreams of millet hoards and starlit flights. Don’t let on that you see through them, though, their little egos are worth preserving. #smaugust #dragon

Of course, many dragons choose to maintain a non-traditional hoard. The sophisticated dragon knows that a richly endowed orchard can induce as much envy and treasure-lust in the local populace as the largest piles of gold. #dragons ##smaugust #smaugust2026 #dragonart #illustration #coloredpencils

If you’ve been wondering why getting a dragon as your wizardly familiar is so often discouraged, please understand that it isn’t so much that alchemical experiments and curious dragons don’t mix, it’s that they DO want to mix SO badly. #smaugust #smaugust2026 #dragon #dragonart #illustration #magic

When it comes to dragons’ hoards, “Look, Don’t Touch” is the cardinal rule. You might think the “Don’t Touch” is the most important part about that credo, but that’s because you’ve never offended a dragon by not being impressed enough by his hoard. You MUST come prepared to gush. #smaugust #dragons

Remember, ALWAYS keep your dogs on a leash when walking in a nature preserve - some of the nature can get pretty spicy when annoyed 🔥 #dragons #Smaugust #Smaugust2026 #dragonart #illustration

It’s Smaugust! I did a bunch of dragon commissions last year, so get ready for a month of lovely, lovely wyrms~ #smaugust #smaugust2026 #dragons #dragonart #illustration #mythicalcreatures #fantasyart #coloredpencils #drawing #flowers

Just some little kiddens today. #kittens #cats #gesturedrawing #sketchbook #catart #kittenart #drawing #sketching

I took a little sketching trip to the farmer's market this weekend - I had to haunt the benches for a while to nab a spot in the shade, but I finally got a good spot to sketch (and some organic potatoes!) #sketching #sketchbook #lifedrawing #urbansketching #watercolor #drawing #dogs #gesturedrawing

8th Grade Jaimie v. Present Day Jaimie – I’ve gotten a lot less dark and edgy, but I still like to obsess about which breeds of horses would translate best into fantasy critters ❤️🐴 #oldart #artimprovement #drawing #fantasyequines #illustration #equineart #horses #art #pegasus

Apparently Tuesday was Be Nice to Bugs Day, so here are some belated little bees~ #bees #insectart #sketchbook #drawing #illustration #bugs #coloredpencils

It’s a doodling critters kind of day~ Doing some reference studies for the custom illustrations requested by my Kickstarter followers - always fun to sit down and learn to draw a new critter! #sketchbook #artprocess #rats #tasmaniandevil #sealion #referencedrawing #gesturedrawing #animalart

Several years ago I drew the front of this horse, and now, for secret reasons of my own, I have drawn the rest of its rear~ #horse #horseart #illustration #coloredpencils #drawing #art #equineart #wip #futureprojects #animalart

I’ve got three colorful critters newly available in my shop as prints – an affordable way to brighten your walls! jaimiewhitbread.com/shop #prints #artprints #griffon #cow #borzoi #mythicalcreatures #fantasyart #illustration #drawing #coloredpencils #animalart #griffonart #cowart #peacockdog

It's fun to come up with remarques for my books - my signature is so illegible, I do feel like I have to add a little extra to prove it's really me. Like, yes, that's my name in that squiggle, I did this book. Look, I've drawn a little donkey to prove it. #donkey #sketch #doodle #remarque #books
