Oh, so the 1 dollar donut from Jake's Pup in the Ruff is the reason I'm poor. See, I thought it was because AI & Indeed have destroyed the ability of laborers to find employment that aligns with their skill and experience, but apparently it was actually just the weekly donut.

ETX Gov@etxgov.myatproto.social

Never thought I'd see the day when Millenials weren't catching these strays. Enjoy your time in the sun Gen Z, your grandma is gonna ask why you buy coffee and don't save for a house.

I've never understood why we don't do this by default.

Margot Finn@eicathomefinn.bsky.social

'Danish teenagers will have to make an oral defence of their written essays to combat AI cheating, the government has announced.' Piloting this for 2nd year undergraduate research essays this year, though NB it's not just policing: also develops key oral skills. 1/2

This is just objectively true. Why is this treated like some kind of debate? The question isn't "is climate change killing us?" The question is "what do we do about it?"

Zack Polanski@zackpolanski.bsky.social

I'm not sure it's accurate to say I've "claimed it" as much as it's a scientific reality. The climate crisis is killing people and on track to get much worse. Seems big & worth having a plan to tackle. I'm calling on the Government to have an emergency meeting and create a plan - and carry it out.

At this point, I'm convinced that cars are some kind of enchanted demon engine that robs people of their humanity the moment they step inside.

Kanchan@kayehm.bsky.social

A UK study found that telling potential SUV buyers that those vehicles directly result in higher fatalities for pedestrians, cyclists and children had zero effect on their decision to buy them. What does work? Financial penalties: Increased fees, taxes, parking. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...

Kinda seems like the solution to transit-funding is just broad-based upzoning. Replace SFH zoning with three-flats by-right, and bada-bing bada-boom.

Jarrett Walker@humantransit.bsky.social

When you ask voters to approve taxes for public transit, what you mostly get is a map of residential density. Here's the latest from Spokane, WA where the measure narrowly leads at the moment.

More on the medical theme: modern medicine is basically science fiction. 30+ years ago, certain diseases were a death sentence. Now most forms of cancer are treatable and you can live a normal life with AIDS. Its to the point that if Breaking Bad released today, Walter's lung cancer would be curable

Brecht von Bladet (she/her), PhD@vonbladet.bsky.social

I am reading an unpleasant French book set in 1986 in which gay men are starting to die of AIDS in large numbers. (And a lot of people were famously very weird about it.) I am living in 2026, where they don't.

In other Michigan news, the state looks set to elect it's first transgender lawmaker. Joanna Whaley won her Democratic primary and will compete in November for a state house seat, beating a primary opponent who tried and failed to disqualify her for not running under her deadname

I literally cannot fathom being this reliant on AI to function. Like, even if you use AI, wouldn't it be as like a robo-coworker? What are you doing all day if you just order ChatGPT to do your job for you?

People really don't get how easy it is to die a million different ways before you turn ten. Even before you're born, just flip through the obstetrics section of an EMS textbook and you'll find twenty different ways to die before you ever see the sun for the first time. Modern medicine is a miracle.

Extremely funny possibility that our racist American Asses win the 21st century because we somehow managed to only be Average Chicago Ethnic White level racist and not Nathan Bedford Forrest level racist

I hate that it's basically impossible to build these kinds of homes today. All anybody thinks about is high-rise condos and single-family homes. The historical norm is to build relatively small multi-family homes with family-style apartments, the dichotomy between apartments and houses is artificial

Zak Yudhishthu@zyudhishthu.bsky.social

A fond goodbye to my Avondale apartment, which breaks every part of its RS-3 zoning and could never be built today ❌ 12 units (2 unit max) ❌ 40 ft tall (30 ft max) ❌ 260 sq ft lot area/unit (2,500 min) ❌ 0 ft rear setback (35 ft min) And way above the 0.9 floor-area ratio cap

Some of my favorite shots of Ravenswood, Chicago. A quiet little town in its own right, right in the middle of the Northside. Neighborhoods like this are why Chicago feels like 70 smaller towns all duct taped together. #urbanism #chicago #fuckcars

Surprising absolutely nobody, it turns out that cops hate trans people

Williams Institute@williamsinstitute.bsky.social

California police made about 577,000 traffic stop searches in 2023. Contraband was found at similar rates across groups, but people perceived as transgender were far more likely to be arrested than those perceived as cisgender or gender nonconforming. Read the report: tinyurl.com/CA-Police-Stops

Update: Did not live up to the hype. Solid 6/10. Typical Nolan movie with the pacing of a Mr. Beast video and color palette of an emo teenager's first comic strip. Phenomenal cinematography and action scenes. Penelope & Calypso were robbed of all agency, and Odysseus was a generic American war hero.

Sam Mobley@jakemobley.bsky.social

So does the Odyssey actually live up to the hype? I'm seeing local theaters sell out a full week in advance, I don't remember the last time that's happened 🎥 📽️🎞️

It took us a while, but we're getting there. Solarpunk, here we come.

The Upshot@upshot.nytimes.com

“We know people want these — they want them now,” Ms. Stryker said. “Electricity prices are skyrocketing, and people are really worried about climate change.” www.nytimes.com/2026/07/31/b...

Reading about the Pilgrims is crazy, cause they were basically like "yeah, we know the Indians are people, but we really want to take their stuff so let's just pretend they're evil." 17th Century Puritan sermons are some of the worst examples of double-think you can possibly find.

At this point, I'm convinced that Capitalism is the only thing wrong with AI. Like, how cool is it that you can have a conversation with a wikipedia page? Now imagine how cool it would be if the AI wasn't also destroying rare books and screwing over artists for the sake of profit

Blocking housing for not being affordable enough does not make housing more affordable.

Peter Waldkirch 華彼德@pwaldkirch.bsky.social

Orr: supports affordable housing, supports 6 storey apartments and corner stores, mixed use communities. But Villages Plan could result in significant tenant displacement. Not enough affordability requirements. "Unfettered growth has real consequences." TAKE THAT YOUNG PEOPLE & IMMIGRANTS!

So instead of building bike lanes along a major thoroughfare, the alderwoman is just trying to ban the bikes. In a major city. In the city with the worst car traffic in the entire country. Car brain needs to be fucking studied, at this point. #fuckcars

E-scooters are now blocked on a busy stretch of Sheridan Road in Edgewater — and e-bikes could be blocked next. blockclubchi.co/3RspHgx

This is crazy revisionism. The only major Leftist who came out against Platner was FD Signifier, cause FD actually cares about racism. Hasan Piker & Kyle Kulinski swept for him, the Majority Report gave him softball interviews, etc. Liberals were getting mocked for caring about his Nazi tattoo.

"parents rights" are an excuse to treat children like property, rather than people. Kids have rights, parents have responsibilities. If trans people exist, then trans kids do, too. Its insane for parents to decide the gender of their kids, as though the kid is just an extension of the parent

I think the scariest part is when they go into the paint for "parents rights." "A parent knows their kid best" oh my God trans kids are escaping abusive households every day and they try to pull out that nugget?

Reminder that any trans person like Caleb Smith who does propaganda for transphobic Democrats is a traitor asking you to concede that trans women are essentially men, which is the only basis for trans sports bans. Any Democrat who says this believes trans women are men and should be voted against.

Corinne Green@ket.bsky.social

i want to make it clear that i'm consistent: i condemn this shit even from people i think of as friends. caleb & i poured over novel anti-trans bills together. often he was the only one who saw the same horrors as me - analysis that's been proven to be bang on. he has not responded to my text yet.

This is the result of one of the most successful propaganda campaigns in history, coupled with car companies buying up rail networks and intentionally running them into the ground. The only way this changes is years of intense counter-messaging.

Stan Oklobdzija@stano.bsky.social

In America, mass transit is widely considered to be an alternative of last resort for the extremely poor rather than a safer, cheaper, cleaner and more efficient means of moving people around a metropolitan area.

And whatever happens to trans people is their own fault, too? Should we just let the Republican Party erase us from existence because the Dems were too moderate? What about Latines? Is it their own fault if ICE burns their communities to the ground?

Woke is when bikes. Freedom is when cars.

John Lloyd@boyonabike62.bsky.social

State DOTs: lack of active transportation funding is a key barrier to implementing complete streets. Trump’s USDOT: sorry, we only fund car infrastructure.🥴

This is your friendly reminder that Trump promised to fix high prices by getting rid of all the brown people. Kamala promised to fix high prices by responsibly managing the economy. If you think these two things are comparable, I have a bridge to sell you in Manhattan.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? THEY LITERALLY PUBLISHED A THOUSAND-PAGE MANIFESTO ON HOW TO DO FASCISM. Literally everything that is happening right now was a Trump campaign promise. He promised to tear down our country, and that's what he is doing. How can you pretend to be on the left and ignore project 2025?

This post is unavailable.

Dems are suing the Trump admin into the ground and fighting tooth and nail to keep trans people out of Senate bills. What world are you living in? Sure, there is a minority of rightwing dems that defect for specific bills, but it's bizarre to judge an entire party when individuals break ranks

Unearned = extracting value without giving it back The classic examples are inheriting money from daddy or abusing a monopoly. Others include abusing IP, speculating on land values, etc. All of these things can be taxed or regulated out of existence. Land value tax, inheritance tax, etc.

Most of the people who now think all Hatians need to be deported didn't even know there were Hatian refugees here 18 months ago. How embarrassing to be led around by the nose like that.

When the choice is between the status quo and literal fascism, refusing to vote means endorsing fascism. In the face of fascism, refusing to vote means endangering the lives of every queer person and POC in America. How many have to die because people refused to vote for the status quo in 2024?

The last boomers were born in the sixties. This entire list is filled with the accomplishments of the Silent Generation and Greatest Generation. Boomers weren't politically dominant until decades after these laws were passed, which is coincidentally when these laws started being dismantled.

Prof. Eliot Jacobson@climatecasino.net

Disagree. Boomers did more than any other generation to enact environmental policy. See the list below. But for the actions of the boomers in the 1960s & 70s, this generation would never have been born to complain about boomers not doing enough.

The Silent Generation created almost our entire framework for environmental protection, from the EPA to the Clean Air Act. Boomers didn't become politically dominant until the seventies and eighties, which is coincidentally right when America started voting to slowly roll back these protections

Prof. Eliot Jacobson@climatecasino.net

Agree -- SG were the politicians of the day. Boomers start in 1946 -- the youth riots in the late 60s & early 70s were mostly boomers, the boomers put the pressure on the "establishment" through their protests. And Nixon, a republican, was the greatest environmental president in US history.
