Now just $9 away from passing the funds raised for my previous campaign. One digital deluxe pledge would put it over. Can I interest you in a comic that's fueled by my time working as an assistant manager at a drug store with a supernatural twist? www.kickstarter.com/projects/jam...

This was a great debut column from @louissouthard.bsky.social looking at the present state of breaking into comics. Very much looking forward to future installments.

So, if you want to see what the fuss is about. If you want to see what it is about this story that has been a consistent presence in my mind for 20 years, check out the Kickstarter. There's 7 days left! www.kickstarter.com/projects/jam...

I started college as a computer science major and then roomed with a guy doing radio / TV production. My final projects were hours of code and he was going on a mountain w/ an afro wig and a sword. I was in the wrong field. That, coupled with a job in retail, planted the seed for CLEAN UP CREW.

Seeing Miles develop and grow from a timid, uncertain college grad into a guy fighting for his life against vampires has been the joy of CLEAN UP CREW. By the time I got to the end of the series, now totaling 5 issues, I was pumping my fist in the air. I stuck the landing.

I realized that there was another story here and it would be a fine one. It would check the boxes. It would look cool. But it wasn't the story I wanted to tell. I went back to basics. What was the core idea that excited me about CLEAN UP CREW? It's a kid at a crossroads.

Miles is the heart of CLEAN UP CREW. He just graduated college. He doesn't know what he wants to do as his first "real job" but he's good at retail. He could make a life here. Would he be fulfilled though? That's what he needs to figure out. When the vampire show up he's forced to make that decision

I started revising CLEAN UP CREW. This could be bigger. This could have more to it. I fleshed out the characters. I made sure their motivations were clear. I used what I learned from 10+ years of comic reviewing and my first mini-series to make this better.

After a few chats w/ editor James Powell, I hit some roadblocks. He brought up some good points about the story that made question the path. I started rewriting again. I reworked the whole setup. I changed characters. I changed locations. I fleshed out a whole world...and I hated it.

After hitting a rut in 2021 and battling some depression, I decided to put down the press hat and start writing. Encouraged by @theilluminerdi.bsky.social, I got into some anthologies. I connected w/ Dan Buksa and we made a short, then started into a mini-series which became A REAL SLOBBERKNOCKER.

After the first issue was done and a successful Kickstarter fulfilled, I realized I didn't have anything else to do. Dan was working on the second issue of A REAL SLOBBERKNOCKER, but my part was done. I needed another project, but what? CLEAN UP CREW was still there. I dusted off the script.

More time past. Writing was an unknown. There was a fear to it. I had to put myself out there. Reviewing was safe and it never ended. Every Wednesday was another wave of books to cover. It was easy to get into that cycle. Still, CLEAN UP CREW remained in my mind. It never left.

The concept about a vampire janitor hit me as I was pushing a broom around the store one night. What's a job that a vampire could have in the modern day? How would a vampire survive when you need a credit card to get anything from a streaming service to food delivery?

I originally saw CLEAN UP CREW as a movie. Inspired by Kevin Smith's Clerks, I'd film it overnight in the store I worked at. I'm sure corporate would be ok with that, right? Smith's line about making movies requires $20 million and Ben Affleck hit like a reality check. I'd also need more people.

Clean Up Crew is less than $200 from hitting the same amount my last campaign raised, but with 50 fewer backers. I would be ecstatic to bridge the gap with digital backers alone. Want to check out a PDF of this brand new horror comic for $6? www.kickstarter.com/projects/jam...

I need some tech help. My son wants an iPad to get Pro Create to draw and to talk to friends through Face Time. I don't know anything about Apple products. Any suggestions on which model for an iPad? I'm fine getting a used or refurbished one.

I listened to this last night and it was a GREAT interview. I loved Lisa's comment about Batman being Scott's boss. It helps frame how important it was to tell this story at this time and this way. I want to approach all my comics the way @ssnyder1835.bsky.social does.

As I said, a lot went into the makings of Clean Up Crew. This is a personal story for me, following a young man at a crossroads, forced to make a decision that will change his life forever...while fighting vampire janitors. Check it out here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/jam...

The retail element is also at play with Kevin Smith's Clerks as an influence. That movie, as well as Smith's earlier work had a major impact on me as well as starting me down a creative path. That's one of the reasons why @radpencils.bsky.social's variant had to be an homage to Clerks.

When I started searching for an artist for Clean Up Crew, I referenced Chew from John Layman and Rob Guillory as the visual style I was aiming for. @adambarnhardt.com pointed me towards Samir and I could not be more thankful. Absolutely nailed what I was looking for with Clean Up Crew.

One of the themes I love to explore in my writing is someone finding their place in the world. Mech Cadet Yu from @gregpak.net & Takeshi Miyazawa and Wayward from @jimzub.com & Steven Cummings are great examples of these stories. They are two books that mean a lot to me.

The origins of Clean Up Crew trace back to my days as an assistant manager at an Eckerd drug store in college. I was finishing up school and could have stayed on there. I had no idea what I was going to do professionally. That's where Miles is at in the comic. Similar hair too.

The concept, vampires working as overnight janitors was a way to make sense of monsters living in the present day. I like the way @zackkaps.bsky.social explores this in his hard sci-fi work like Eclipse & Mindset, two books that don't just hit you w/ a cool idea, but show how it can actually happen

While this is a horror book, there's some fun to it. I love how close horror and comedy can be and few exemplify that more than Eric Powell's The Goon. You can have scares one minute and then laughs the next. And yes, Tim Seeley pops up here again w/ Hack/Slash.

First, the vampires. I wanted them to be scary & intimidating. The example I sent to Samir was 2012's Ex Sanguine from @hackintimseeley.bsky.social and Josh Emmons. I loved the way the teeth jutted out, like their mouths couldn't contain the sheer power and terror. It has stuck w/ me since its debut

I am still getting used to talking about my comics to strangers. I was at a leadership event today and people asked me about my comics. I went full in on it, pulling up the Kickstarter link and scrolling through while I pitched the premise.
