Nope, that's not a dog standing at my neighborhood entrance. Our City Coyote is back! He's pretty, but I think I will be a little more aware now when walking my dogs at night. 👀🐺

“This place was never about saving anyone. It was about preying on the desperate, taking their money, their hope. And I fell for it." Still thinking about @tammykomoff.bsky.social 's story "Clearance Items at the Underground Dark Magic Night Market" in Lady Churchhill's Rosebud Wristlet. 💔🐈‍⬛

I’m excited to announce my story “The Shearing of the Beasts” will be published by @castofwonders.org. It’s a coming of age story set in a world w/ wild and domesticated unicorns, examining the things we do to and for the creatures we claim to love. Many thanks to editor Katherine Inskip & team.

holy shit, this is the whole ballgame in a single paragraph gAI systems require mass theft of copyrighted works, for the explicit purpose of replacing the market for the people they stole from, and the people in charge knew what they were doing ahead of time, and did it anyway

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

New life goal: To be a crab who does not let the bucket change me. 🦀🪣 Also, to write with this much poetry, humor and common sense about … anything.

@vajra.me is spot on: "He wishes to skip past the difficult part, to fast forward the boring bits, to sidestep history & arrive in the golden city, fully automated&luxurious. I LOVED this novel. Can't wait for the rest of the world to read it. Congrats, Julie!

21 days to The Sea-Glass Shore launch! So glad for these words from @jamieboyd.bsky.social, whose storytelling in "The Wilding Year" plays in such a believable and hopeful way with the bizarre and ordinary unpredictability of the human body. strangehorizons.com/wordpress/fi...

Glad my youngest prefers making elaborate models of historic battles and scenes from his favorite novels to attending expensive summer camps. This one came out really well — not just the electricity he used to simulate cannon fire but the dramatic movie soundtrack playing in the background. 😂

Happy 1st Birthday to the New Puppy who is officially no longer new or a puppy. 🥳🎉 Henceforth, I hereby nickname her Trouble and submit into evidence for name change: one leather chair with a big bite missing on the arm, two gnawed wood side tables, a pillow and many many disembowled stuffed toys.

This is so gross -- tho I have to smugly point out I sorta predicted it in my story "All You Ever Wanted," that ran last year in Shorelines of Infinity @shoreinf.bsky.social. For the record my virtual AI teacher was cooler. I assumed school boards would have higher standards. 😒

Less than two days left. Stretch goal to pay 9 cents a word has been hit! Let's get it to 10 cents.

The Strange Horizons Annual Fund Drive to keep us publishing in 2027 is finally here! You can find the fund drive at the link ⬇️ www.backerkit.com/c/projects/s... Some changes have arrived this time around though. Read the thread to learn more.

The Broad in Los Angelos was a surprise hit for my whole family, which normally prefers outdoor adventures to museums. Lots of color, movement and contrasting styles. Free admission was nice too.

I will miss you, California. We toured colleges, walked beneath redwoods, biked the Golden Gate Bridge, went to a cool art museum, ate giant fruit-shaped confections, and caught a World Cup game that we lost but thoroughly enjoyed. Until next time.

I’ve been reading a lot of creepy crawly short fiction lately— fantasy, science fiction and horror inspired by bugs. Here are my favorites (new and classics) with some links 🧵 1/9

“Reeling for Empire” by Karen Russell in her anthology Vampires in the Lemon Grove A man lures girls to the city w/ promises of factory jobs that will lift their families out of poverty. Instead, they're given a potion that turns them into human-silkworm hybrids. 2/9

I'm taking the reappearance of screwworm in the U.S. as a reminder to listen to the 1977 classic sci-fi horror novelette "The Screwfly Solution" by James Tiptree Jr. (Alice Sheldon). pseudopod.org/2014/08/22/p...

Bad news: Screwworm is back in the US. Good news: We know how to fight it. With millions of sterilized male screwworm flies. Bad news: We don't have enough capacity to produce all the flies we need. My latest for @wired.com: www.wired.com/story/us-pla...

Annals of AI fuckups: an author forwarded me the email below, in which the book club scammer mistakenly sent the AI output instead of the intended email pitch. Note the "strategic analysis", which illustrates the scammers' boiled-frog approach

Can you spot him? We lost a lot of our iguanas in the cold weather, and my flowers were really enjoying the break from being on the menu. But it appears they're baaaaaaaaack. 🦎💐🥬 😩

Did you almost forget this awesome con is going on this weekend? Did you know you can still register and attend in your pajamas or fit it around whatever other plans you tried but can't get out of because its ALL ONLINE and ONLY $25?! Are you me? Because you sound a lot like me ...
