But all that said, next time you find yourself up against some thicko demanding a definition of a woman... ...maybe ask them to define a tree. And when they can't, ask them why one question is so easy for them, another so hard

Nah. If you wanna be a woman, all it takes is a quick shuftie at your genitals the day you're born and that's it. Done. Dusted. Defined. Whereas, trees... Not go into detail. Just go Google it yourself: "legal definition of a tree."

It includes a great many factors, including species. Height. Expected height. Age. Girth (ooer, missus!). There are different definitions of a tree for (different) legal purposes. And there are dissenting legal views.

But it's not just language. Or, rather, not just the everyday, commonplace language that we use, er, every day. Wanna chop down a tree in your garden? It's subject to the law and -guess what - the law does not content itself with simplistic definitions like it has done for "woman."

But perhaps for context... rebuttal, even... you could ask them how they define something. Something easy, let's say. Like a tree. I hit this one many years ago while doing linguistics. It came up en passant, in respect of the relationship between language and the world it described.

Turns out there are languages - and associated people's-around the world with no specific word for tree. Far as they are concerned, it's bush, bush, bigger bush, bush. A hedgerow is just a well-organised forest.

To begin. Demanding your opponent define a thing, then just nit-picking is not any sign of intellectual sophistication. It's a dick move. Rarely honest. A debating trick: no more. Socrates did it a lot... and he was a dick.

Heartening as it is to see the hot words today and yesterday on the NHS ban, folks who would like to make a difference need to follow through. That means making it clear to the NHS now - not at point of going into hospital - that you will refuse treatment rather than be placed on the wrong ward.

Last up, while it may be rhetorically impactful, don't go telling medical folks you'd "rather die" than be treated on x ward. There will be bad faith actors out there who see that as their cue to get you sectioned for 'suicidality,' and you will then have no rights to decide on your own treatment.

I shall be telling my GP this later in the month and asking them to note it on my record. In addition, maybe start to list out friends, relatives, allies, who can step forward to advocate for you if that moment arrives.

Looking for something to read now...or maybe a christmas present or two? How about J. K. Rowling and the Anti-Trans Panic? Details in quote skeet below. bsky.app/profile/tran...

If you'd like to read an interesting analysis of what has been going on in the wider world, you might consider buying a copy of J. K. Rowling and the Anti-Trans Panic ohiostatepress.org/books/titles... If you'd like to pay a bit less, you can use the code word PANIC to get a 40% discount.

What is pissing me off today? Maybe, the fact that the geopolitical world i grew up with, then lived with, all my life was structured round the US need to keep Russia at bay. And today, not just Trump, but a procession of senior GOP folks are scolding Europe, as if this was OUR doing, all along.

I don't even know how to characterise this. Hypocrisy? Certainly. A re-writing of history? Yup. But beyond that, it's just demented. I'd say "like watching a 6-year-old discovering matches," but at least a 6-year-old understands the concept of consequences.

OK. I'm staying with Pierre, which is a semi-decent drama about a campaigning lawyer trying to solve a crime against a background of police racism and other shenanigans. And i accept that most sleuths are meant to be flawed characters. But, boy! Is Pierre an a'hole. Entitled. Insensitive.

Wtf! Following on a seriously skewed attack on Labour plans a week or so back, Jeremy Vine today doing a UK Economy 101 with just the one guest there to talk up neoliberal economics, with a good dose of "There Is No Alternative" on the side. I blame the producers...

And now he's citing Trump's action on paper straws as a great idea. Also he hates bottle tops you cannot remove from bottles. Feels like he has been sent off for re-education and all the middle of the road niceness has been trained out.

So. This is unlike me. Apart from getting picky over minor details that other folks would let by. Anyway. #Uprising. No idea if it's a good film. Though the fact it seems to be presenting the English Rising (1381) as a "Peasants'" Revolt seems to be very much at odds with what we now know. But...

This is just taking the piss. I can't remember any other advertiser doing this, and i am cross. At the Uprising marketers. And at the Channels for allowing such a weight of advertising on their channel. Cross enough that i will likely now NOT go osee the film. Here endeth the rant.

The advertising for #Uprising has me seriously hacked off. I watch a lot of history channels on YouTube. I don't pay a subscription. So i accept i will get to see/hear ads. I am OK with that. But not OK with the Uprising ad campaign.

First noticed on one Channel (After Dark) where i had to abandon watching one reel because - i timed it - i was getting an ad for Uprising approx every 80 seconds. Since then, i have had similar issues on other history channels, including History Hit, where i have now found...

Have always understood that communicating by means of "sticky messaging" is a good strategy... The fact that i have just submitted an expense claim with treacle stains on it is, however, wholly unrelated to the above!

So. I was today years old when i discovered you could buy a 'cat wrestling glove,' aka 'cat rough play glove' (ooer, missus!) TLDR: this guy loves to play, to pounce... but doesn't know how sharp his own claws are. I need protection. #NorwegianForestCat #cats #catsky #catcanoe

Anyhoo... here's a quick piece of mid-week trivia. And, as further evidence that left and right oft meet around the back, which famous gender crit said the following? No cheating, i.e., no googling! (other search engines are not available for this quiz)

Robin Johnson@robinjohnson.bsky.social

I don't understand the question unless the point is that she thinks it's insulting to be called right wing

Meanwhile, down in the woods... Young woman: "Hello, Mr Bear!" Bear: "Hello." YW: "My, what big teeth you have!" Bear: "Uh-huh." YW: "And your claws!" Bear: "Yeah, sorry. But..." YW: "What?" Bear: "I never went to an Ivy League University." YW: "Yay! Would you like to meet my grandma?"
