A unit previously leased by the British Heart Foundation is being converted to a Popeye’s Chicken, so in a nice twist, we’re going from tackling heart disease to promoting it 😅

I've been receiving plenty of spam lately along these lines: Title "Study in the UK" and body "BestFit Universities has successfully placed students to leading Universities in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, Germany & Australia" I hope no-one actually falls for this scam/service.

Somewhere, a security alarm is ringing, with no-one to deactivate it. Before that, a succession of car drivers engaged in competitive horn beeping. And above all this, a speaker blares out the sounds of a Christian preacher, to everyone and no-one in particular. Just another Saturday in Harrow…

It still baffles me that Reddit Inc, a public company, gets away with hosting so much pirated content. Users will share links to articles that bypass paywalls, before they banned it there was a sub for sharing OnlyFans content, it's like anything is game if you're a corporation and not an individual

Being racially abused in Instagram comments by an account that appears to belong to someone in Pakistan? Okay, checks out, I’m ethnically Indian and the countries are often at odds. By an apparently self-hating (against minorities) black femme boy? Damn, the Internet really attracts all sorts.

Anecdotally, two relatives believe they've just had COVID again, and a recruitment agent I spoke with believes his family might have caught it recently as well.

There is a betting app with an advert on Spotify that is genuinely noteworthy; set to a banging house/techno beat, a robotic male voice says "Train toilet door, didn't work. Train toilet door, didn't work. Lock broken, everyone has seen me on the bog." and then a female singer comes in to segue to

the app. I hate gambling and gambling apps, they're a pervasive and harmful influence on society, but the first time I heard this advertisement I had to admire the creativity.

I want to write a review that does this book justice, as I consider that those least likely to pick up this book and read it are those most in need of it. I think this may be one of the most important contemporary non-fiction books. What does it mean to be anti-semitic?

"We… do not expect anyone to request, on our behalf, that our right to exist in the land of our fathers, be recognized. It is a different recognition which is required between ourselves and our neighbours: recognition of sovereignty and of the mutual need for a life of peace and understanding."

Are the commonly-used definitions of anti-semitism reasonable or have they been perverted by those with an interest in linking anti-semitism with anti-Zionism? I close with a quote from the book by Menachem Begin, on taking office as prime minister of Israel in 1977: “The right to exist?"

"It would not enter the mind of any Briton or Frenchman, Belgian or Dutchman, Hungarian or Bulgarian, Russian or American, to request for his people recognition of its right to exist. Their existence per se is their right to exist. The same holds true for Israel."

Have I been mistaken to believe that Israel exists because there is no safe place for Jews? And what of Arab Muslim opposition to Israel? Do you assume it is based in prejudice, or are there, were there, less hateful reasons for the Arab states to oppose Israel?

What of the centuries of prejudice faced by Jews in medieval and later Christian states, and the tolerance afforded Jews under Caliphates? Where is the line drawn between legitimate criticism of the Israeli state and racism against Jews?

Does it mean the same thing today as it did 100 years ago? What about Zionism? Would you be surprised to learn that most Western Jews were opposed to the idea of a Jewish nation-state? When did that opposition transition into support, and why?

Slumdog Millionaire is such an emotional rollercoaster, and Dev Patel was such a talented actor so young. The film also echoes City of God in the portrayal of Jamal’s brother, Salim. It was weird watching the first time in a Japanese cinema where laughter is discouraged.

I've only this Summer resumed paying the Licence Fee, so that I could watch the World Cup. What is this, BBC News? Is the Earl Spencer story really in the public interest to this extent? Are there no other stories of significant interest worth mentioning? Imminent escalation in the Persian Gulf, etc

I see the lead story on the Financial Times' website is about off-balance sheet guarantees for data centres. So I'm going to make a cheeky little plug for my friends' work, in which they've explained AI and data centres, among other things, from a banker's perspective, as part of a series:

In my past life as a Civil Servant, we were strongly advised to be very, very careful about anything we shared on social media, either publicly or privately, lest it bring the profession or the Government into disrepute. It would be astonishing if the Police did not have similar policies in place.
