VAMPIRES: TWO CENTURIES OF GREAT VAMPIRE STORIES Doubleday 1987 ed. Alan Ryan. Edward Gorey cover. In the pages of this treasured book in all their glory, are some of the great #vampires in literature, male & female, invisible & metaphoric, doomed & daring! #31DaysOfHalloween

Part of my busy weekend. #fairytales #folklore #gothictales

Another glorious bit of Gothic. This is Rheims Cathedral painted by David Roberts in the early 19th Century. Droolworthy. #Gothic #medieval #Rheims #church #architecture

An enjoyable and insightful talk by Freudian expert and horror film theorist @psycstar.bsky.social taking us on a psychoanalytic journey through horror cinema, discussing legendary titles. #sigmundefreud #theuncanny #psychoanalysis #abjectart #jacqueslacan

A fascinating talk by the brilliant and wonderful Madeleine LeDespencer about the history of the Grand Guignol, including its culture and influence on today's horror cinema. Also the talk covered Poe's influence and its origins. #grandguignol #frenchgothic #horrortheatre

I've posted this before but I'm going to post it again because it didn't get much love on that inferior Friday thing. An example of the spooky penny broadsheets sold in the early 1800s. They never seemed to learn that a picture tells a 1000 words, thereby making a 1000 words redundant. #SpookySunday

A THIN #GHOST Is one of my favourite book titles. The original decorative cloth cover with spider's web design published by Edward Arnold in 1919 is as ghoulishly good as M. R. James's writing. A #gothic gem of a book #SpookySunday #Booksky #31daysofHalloween

WITCHY CAT NAMES PYEWACKET is the name of a witch's familiar found by witchfinder general Matthew Hopkins, 1644. GRIMALKIN another witchy name derives from 'grim' grey, 'malkin', a hare or spinster; Graymalkin is the witches' familiar in Shakespeare's Macbeth #FolkloreSunday #31daysofHalloween

A brilliant and well researched talk by @jendeavour.bsky.social on grief and terror in Victorian child bereavement that engaged the audience. #victorian #victorianstudies

Four Gothic 'blue covers' or 'shilling shockers' reproduced in Peter Haining's 'A Pictorial History of Horror Stories'. #BookWormSat #Gothic #Gothtober #31DaysOfHalloween

Fantastic evening at Brompton Cemetery 🪦 for Memory, Murder and Metamorphosis. A concert that explores love, memory and mortality through three masterpieces of string quartet repertoire from The Idalia Quartet. Finally, I want to thank London Month of the Dead for hosting this great event.

The grave of actor Ernest Thesiger, who played the iconic Doctor Septimus Pretorius in The Bride of Frankenstein, lies in a large family plot with his parents. #thebrideoffrankenstein #doctorseptimuspretorius #ernestthesiger #horroricon

Seriously scary Hell Hounds in Rosa Bonheur's 'Legend Of The Wolves', 19th Century. #31DaysOfHalloween #legend #folklore #FrenchArt #womenartists

Wow. Denholm Elliott and Hazel Court in an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, season 3 (1958). Had no idea he’d appeared in an American production so early on.

Wow! What a read. Thoroughly loved this issue titled 'The Devil Has The Best Tunes'. A fantastic study of folk horror in American music: folk; blues; synth; rock; black metal; and Hip Hop. @crossroadsfolk.bsky.social #folkhorror #folkhorror #occultmusic #robertjohnson

A BEAUTIFUL VAMPIRE Lady Deverish drains the life force of her entire family, including her dog, to remain young and beautiful. Amazingly this little known #Vampire story was published as early as 1896 by Arabella Kenealy, it predates Dracula #31daysofHalloween #Gothtober

And speak of the Devil! Just as we return home from Sybil Leek’s 1950s’ village home, this arrives from the US! A 1971 who’s who of famous American witches (and Manson) with Sybil heading the front cover. A possible indicator to public attitudes to sorcery before The Exorcist landed.

From @deadinkbooks.bsky.social this fascinating anthology of new folk horror tales across the country, featuring talented writers like @lucyrosecreates.bsky.social #folkhorror #folkhorrorweek #horroranthology #mythsandlegends

In my thread on haunted staircases, I'd forgotten this one. In June 1884, Kathleen Leigh Hunt was staying with her cousin in a house in Hyde Park Place, #London. She told the @spr1882.bsky.social : 'One morning I seemed to see, about two stairs in front of me, a figure...' [Cont: #SpookySunday

Autumn comes to the alleys with a crowding of ghosts. Schoolboy firework anticipation triggered by the smoke of every garden bonfire. Comes with half-heard voices full of leaf-rasp and branch-stretch. It comes with waking shadows. – #DAKilory, 1982 #Autumn

TREATISE on VAMPIRES & REVENANTS By Calmet, a Benedictine Monk who lived through the European #vampire epidemic in the eighteenth century. It was translated across Europe as The Phantom World in 1850. Image is my 1993 reprint with cover illustration by Frank Papé #SpookySunday #31daysofHalloween

A wonderful evening last night attending a magnificent interview, conducted by film and TV historian Jonathan Rigby, with Amicus and horror legend Chloe Franks. #amicushorroranthologies #chloefranks #horrorlegend

THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD (1971) Four years after Torture Garden, Robert Bloch scripted the third Amicus horror anthology from four of his own stories. There’s no novelisation and no movie tie-in paperback! But you can still read the stories each segment is based on… #AmicusAnthologies

FEAST OF ST MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS St. Michael the Archangel defeats the Devil, holding him by a chain, in this unsettling painting by Giovanni Gasppero. Gasparro is a contemporary artist who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 2007. Check out the devil's ears and horns! #Michaelmas
