It means effortless action, or in different words, action without an independent doer. #philsci In the same vain as non-duality means duality as the only thing occurring, without some other “independent, untouched sort of thing” causing it to happen.

Today's new installment in the Philosophy in China series: Non-Action in the Laozi (Daodejing) The concept of wuwei or “non-action”: does it mean that the perfect sage or political ruler simply never does anything? www.historyofphilosophy.net/laozi-non-ac... #podcasts #daoism #daodejing #philsky

This is what happens when you put still water over a dark substrate in the sunlight. At least prior the base was cement gray and didn’t heat the water as much.

Everyone knows instinctively that Mike Johnson is a corrupt puppet of the Trump administration too, so can we just get rid of him on vague vibes?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

RAJU: But what evidence is there to prove the California election is rigged? MIKE JOHNSON: Look, some of these efforts are so diabolical and so far upstream it's impossible to prove. But I think everybody knows instinctively that something is wrong here.

If he makes it, his word salad will likely be an even more unintelligibly garbled mess.

The entire Jewish religion is based around being the chosen, which in turn they’ve be persecuted for. That’s not a set of values worth maintaining. It’s just another form of narcissism, the MO of the Republican Party.

This clown preps for his daily Fox appearances by scanning a collection of right-wing talking points on social media which he subsequently clips and scrambles in his head then spews them out in an incoherent word salad. Fox’s useful idiot.

We need to stop making laws that future trumpsters will loophole around and just get rid of them before the puss starts to bubble. Want to follow a law, kick out the current admin.

Washington DC is not the President’s personal real estate empire. Our public buildings belong to the people. That’s why I introduced the Federal Facilities Protection and Oversight Act—to protect our historic federal buildings and ensure no president can demolish or remake them on a whim.

Nope. Language isn’t responsible for diversion from understanding reality as “it really is”. Silly that.

We treat language as a neutral tool for describing reality, but what if it's actually creating it? | https://bit.ly/4uxxAjd Neuroscientist Jeremy Skipper argues that language itself is an altered state of consciousness, and only by losing it can we see the world as it really is. #philsci #cogsci

No such thing as independence from bias. Existence is bias, there’s no where to go that removes bias, no matter how many theories one invokes or tests one confirms. To that “end”, it’s all creation, even the bits we don’t play well with.

Berna Devezer@devezer.bsky.social

On the publication bias discourse, I regret that metascience has become a source of decontextualized, low-res, bean-counting-focused `science is in crisis' narratives. It is largely uncurious abt science, desperately lacking in theory & measurement. I'll quote a few takes I liked & add my thoughts🧵

The example here has driven many “mad”, they get stuck defending an absolute as an independent (in this case, places) phenomena. But as an inferred duality suggests, one can never reach a state of absolute by describing it with “other” absolute values, it requires the subtle to get there. #philsci

The answer deep thought philosophy gives is usually unexceptable. You are the “within it”. Which means there is no independent out-there to manipulate into producing. #philsci #nondual #adichotomy

Though many think of the world as an intelligible place we will one day fully understand, G. Anthony Bruno argues this dream is ultimately a fantasy. | https://bit.ly/3ZdOXXW Bruno suggests that philosophy’s task is not to dispel this mystery, but to find how to live productively within it.

There is no separate physics for aliens, differentiation is the entire ball of wax, alien or native. #philsci #adichotomy #nondual

If we ever meet aliens, would their physics be the same as ours? | https://bit.ly/3NfXffq While this may appear an abstract question, Daniel Whiteson argues its answer could have profound consequences on the pursuit of scientific truth. #philsci ⚛️

There’s probably no division gap to grasp on to. All activities are creation, including the destructive ones.

Is science true, or just a framework we’ve built to feel we have a closer grasp on reality? | https://iai.tv/video/truth-science-and-reality Join Hilary Lawson and John Ioannides as they explore an issue which has divided philosophers and physicians alike. #philsci

Adding or removing states of the universe(s) is really not needed to describe reality, nor could it be the case. #philsci It’s certainly fun to ponder though.

Is there really a possibility we exist in a multiverse? | https://bit.ly/4oVU7Ck The many-worlds interpretation has long divided physicists. Here, theoretical physicist David Deutsch contends that it’s not merely the best explanation of quantum mechanics, but the only one. #philsci ⚛️

From what I can tell, Weiss has always road the shock and horror line for clicks and cash. Useful idiot, indeed.

Likely valid, while we can parse stuff as individual, its regular order is cohesive and uninterrupted.

We tend to think of the present moment as an infinitely small, discrete period of time, but is this incorrect? | https://bit.ly/4qjMRSX Emily Herring argues that this is a mistake; time is a flow, containing past, present and future all at once. #philsci ⚛️ 🧪

In the exact same way there are “multiple universes”. Division is the illusion that reality is actually split up into parts. #philsci

Is a single self enough to hold together our messy, often contradictory collection of experiences and drives? | https://bit.ly/42iFsc7 Sam Harris, Roger Penrose and Sophie Scott met to debate The Divided Self. Tap the link to read more. #philsci #philsky

It’s clear this seems counterintuitive to idealized experience, but there isn’t a cosmos out there or ID in here. No independent view from no where to confirm an expanding universe out there. It’s definitely ok/normal to make such assumptions. Yet reality is the normal, consistent, mundane. #philsky

Could we be wrong about everything? | https://iai.tv/articles/evidence-the-universe-might-not-be-expanding-auid-2551 Tim Anderson argues that we must seek to reconcile this theory with observations that are consistent with a non-expanding universe. #philsci ⚛️ 🧪

There is ‘likely’ no independent anything to create ‘other’ stuff and be called god, even in the most traditional sense. Proof of existence isn’t proof, especially if personal awareness is not required. i.e. “I” personhood, is not some separate requirement for existence as proof. #philsci

I’m not sure that it’s particularly difficult here, if the experience of time is relative to the “speed of light”, then from our particular perspective (here on this planet, in this system), light speed would also appear to have a particular relatable relation of which we could measure. #philsci

Humanity’s quest for a theory of everything drives much of science, but can we ever truly know the universe? | https://bit.ly/47gHJqU Philosopher of science JB Manchak argues that even with all possible perspectives, it’s impossible to grasp the full structure of spacetime from within. #philsci 🧪

There aren’t “selves” in any independent way. There is multiplicity in singulars, a duality, top to bottom, as an everywhere to go between. #philsci

Unfortunately it’s not “just biology”. Conflict and distinction is the very fiber of being, of perception, of reality. I will say, the sooner we stop trying to make it something else, the sooner we can be more collaborative.

Can biology offer a reason for our modern polarisation between nations, religions, races, ethnicities, and political camps? | https://bit.ly/48wMj5G Join Robert Lawrence Kuhn (Closer to Truth), Massimo Pigliucci, John Dupré, and Maria Balaet to explore the biology of conflict. #philsci 🧪

In a typical retort to a _true origin of_ the answer is duality, a practiced mediation (or just "feeling in the zone") makes this clear. The examiner falls to the examined, the doer falls to the doing. It's not a moment of synchronization, it's an eternity of being, without breaks.

It's not human centric intuition, as there is no independent center of which can be lapsed by other stuff, thoughts, energies, objects, etc. All comings and goings, doings and doers are "it". There isn't another. #philsci

No need to invoke existential crisis or anything 🤪

The false vacuum suggests that the universe exists in an unstable energy state; what seems like “empty space” could collapse and destroy the universe. | https://bit.ly/470KJqo Mathias Vogel says this it challenges science’s assumption that the laws of nature are constant and reliable. #philsci ⚛️ 🧪

Totality would indeed be beyond.

We are well aware by now of the observer problem in quantum mechanics. Human subjectivity appears to play a key role in the results of quantum experiments. | https://bit.ly/4gqMUrx However, the observer problem reaches far beyond just quantum mechanics, argues Edward Frenkel. #philsci ⚛️ 🧪
