My new cookbook Nights Out In The Kitchen once more has recipes inspired by my favourite restaurant dishes, but it’s also a culinary coming out, because there are a bunch that are mine; family favourites I’ve long been making. Order link below and more info in the alt text. linktr.ee/egmoran15

FWIW here’s what I described as looking like school dinners.

Meanwhile over on insta a chef I gave a mixed review to - checks notes - two years ago, has just had a rant about me. It’s good to see he’s dealing with it so well.

So this week's media-studies lesson is that you have to be Piers Morgan to get Piers Morgan-sized viewing numbers. The issue with this, of course, is that it requires you to be Piers Morgan.

After a lengthy break the Kitchen Cabinet is back, baby. And we want you in the audience. We’ll be recording in #Inverness next weds Oct 21, then #folkestone on October 27 and #HebdenBridge on November 10. Tickets are free but you need to apply at the link below www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtour...

It's never the ones you expect is it.

An undercover investigation by ITV Exposure into Nigel Farage’s Reform UK has found multiple elected councillors and party candidates expressing racist views and using offensive language, calling Muslims “parasites” and describing black children as “animals”. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

And that is the Nights Out In The Kitchen tour DONE. A huge thank you to the equally huge crowd who came to @the_lowry this afternoon to help me see it out. We will always have salad cream on toast. 1/3

And an equally big thank you to the thousands of you who have joined me on the other dates in the past month, asked superb questions, laughed at my stupid jokes, shared their bacon sandwich sauce preferences, and bought a load of books. I never take any of it for granted, I really don’t. 2/3

There are a bunch of festival and book shop in conversation dates to come. You’ll find some of them in my Linktree in bio. but for now I’m heading home on the train from Manchester for a lie down and a some consecutive nights sleep in my own bed. 3/3

In today’s @ft_weekend there’s a column by me about the writers of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, screwing up season 4 by attempting to dispense with the format across almost every episode. Perhaps you liked the season. You are entitled to that view. You are also wrong. www.ft.com/content/b1d6...

In the past 24 hours I have had four AI written scam email approaches from fake book clubs/ book influencers promising to make me a bestseller. God, it's annoying.

A huge thank you to the big crowd who came to this afternoon's slightly weirdly timed show in Belfast (as in 2pm on a Wednesday). You were fab. Just Coventry and Salford left.

I am in a lovely hotel room In Belfast with no plugs next to the bed, and the most infuriating lighting system I have ever come across. Current status: in bed with the big light on, because you can’t turn on the table lamp by itself. Whoever designed this is a sociopath. Good night.

Edinburgh: see you tomorrow.

Edinburgh people: I'm in your town this coming weekend, with a matinee performance on Sunday of my Nights Out In The Kitchen show. It's funny. I answer some very big questions, like "am I a bastard?" Then I answer your questions. Tickets at the link below. cultureedinburgh.com/events/jay-r...

The @ftweekend.com has a new senior writer and it is @willoyd.bsky.social, who has opened his account with this brilliantly written piece of reporting, examining the UK’s resilience (or complete lack of it) in the face of multiple challenges. It’s very bloody good. www.ft.com/content/ba80...

ft.comHow resilient is Britain? As climate and geopolitical risks cast doubt on the UK’s ability to cope in a crisis, leaders are turning from ‘just in time’ to ‘just in case’ as a governing philosophy

This opinion represents great taste. www.fane.co.uk/jay-rayner

Entertaining evening in Hertford last night listening to restaurant/foodie tales from @jayrayner1.bsky.social - if you get the chance go see him in Edinburgh, Belfast or any other venue on his tour I can recommend if. Looking forward to reading the book 😊

I did a 5Live discussion show with him at the height of the Brexit debate, and he kept his eyes closed throughout his answers to why he opposed a second referendum. Wouldn't look at us. Wasn't pleased when I pointed this out to the listeners, who couldn't see what he was doing.

Rory Stewart turning to stare weirdly at @pronouncedalva.bsky.social on Newsnight last night

On the BBC News Katya Adler has just described Germany, where the far right AFD keep winning elections, as entering 'uncharted political territory'. Hmmm. Where Germany is concerned I think that territory is pretty well charted.

Alongside my feature on the best brown dish at the weekend we published a recipe for a Tuscan Peposo, a beef and red wine stew with peppercorns. Which we didn’t read properly. Things were missing. Like what to do with the other half of the wine. Apologies. Here’s the correct version.

To complete this story, the first leg to Wolverhampton was fine. But the cross country to Reading was Dante’s 9th circle of hell: a standing room crush like the northern line at rush Hour. And so, to my dismay, I am now completing my journey by road which is what happens when transport fails.

Jay Rayner@jayrayner1.bsky.social

People complaining about their train journeys are really annoying. So anyway, join me as what should be a couple of hours back from Chester becomes a five hour hoik through wales, into the West Midlands down to Reading and then to Paddington. Cos the London line is shut at MK. And yes I’m whining.

Tomorrow’s @ftweekend.com comes with an FT Mag special dedicated to the autumnal joys of brown food. My contribution is an intense search for the Best Brown Dish or BBD. A Farrow & Ball colour chart might have been involved. Do pick up a print copy if you can. It’s a beautiful thing.

I glow, I glow.

And a special #CookbookCorner shoutout for 'Nights Out In The Kitchen: More Recipes and Stories from a Restaurant Critic’s Life' by @jayrayner1.bsky.social, a wonderful writer and a great eater! I just love this book.

Been invited onto a YouTube food game show, part of a channel which gets 25 million views a month, backed by major US Network. No fee but good for ‘exposure’. Ha ha ha. Also format sounds truly dreadful. Will review if/when it sees light of day, featuring every wet-lipped influencer going.

Note to self: if you are going to be needing dinner in Belfast on a Tuesday night, manage your expectations. Everything that looks fun and /or interesting doesn't seem to open until Wednesday. Suggestions welcome.

For various reasons which drive me nuts, sounds (and podcast platforms) only have one series of TKC available to listen to at a time, during its run and for a few weeks after. That period has ended. We are on a break right now so there aren't any. We return late in October.

This post is unavailable.

Oh sure, it's great for reducing food waste NOW. But mark my words: he day will come when, on a coordinated cue, our AI restaurant overlords, will KILL US ALL WITH SCALDING PANS OF HOT POT BROTH. And so on.
