In the worlds least surprising turn of events

Fascinating about the Tesla Roadster how no commentator has noticed that there isn't anyone sitting in the car, no one getting in or out. A purely decorative car that cannot bring a person from A to B? Will never be street legal. Going on these tangents should cause the stock price to drop...

Trump on global warming: "That didn't work out because the planet got cooler. In fact, you know the ice that was melting? It right now just set a record. It's the biggest ice cube that's ever been in the history of the world ... they're doing the scam with data centers, by the way."

Support your local investigative journalists y'all, they're doing incredible work!

NEW: On social media and in tabloids, photos from Don Jr. and Bettina Trump’s Bahamas wedding were tightly curated. But sometimes, what — or, who — isn’t pictured is just as important as what is. Let’s go on an investigative, visual tour.

Just realized that the US has been targeting *full* oil tankers. Ignoring for a moment that the whole conflict is a farce, they could have just as well crippled the Iranian economy by targeting *empty* tankers. An avoidable environmental disaster, I suppose none of the decision makers care anyways.

Update: The academic flight from Twitter is now complete and appears permanent. April 2023, after the pandemic research surge, we recorded 2,234,307 posts sharing research on Twitter. As of April this year, "X" had 896,741 posts about research. That's a 60% drop in traffic.

Love this story. There are so many things we can do locally to protect the environment, or even the planet. My go-to example have always been pipelines. They cover vast areas and states just grant companies the permit. They don't have to, but they do it. (Admittedly a simplification but still...)

heated.worldOil executives just accidentally exposed the industry’s greatest weaknessTo keep drilling, Big Oil needs permission to dump treated fracking wastewater into rivers and onto cropland. We don’t have to give it to them.

My daughter started reading and now I need to get her fresh product every week! Scary how fast kids get hooked!

They’re installing an infinite free library nearby. Really worried. I didn’t vote for this. Kids get lost in those things all the time

Tonight I dug this script out of my visualization archives from four years ago. Sadly, I had to further extend the y-axis scale as rapid warming continues, with a new record this year. No surprise to many experiencing the extreme summer heat... Data from GISTEMPv4: data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/faq/

Unfortunately, teachers do have to work though and I do feel for them.

According to my beliefs, today is a traditional holiday for parents called "first day of school."

This brine-injected chicken is such a pain to cook, rendering all this water. They've made it so preparing tofu is easier than preparing chicken, amazing!

Just one more airstrike bro! I swear bro just one more, I swear.

Israel is planning to rejoin the war against Iran, CBS reports. The US is considering strikes against Iran’s energy infrastructure, the WSJ says. #foreverwar

Taps the sign: it's climate change, dummy!

Katharine Hayhoe@katharinehayhoe.com

Scan your local news today. How many stories are about something climate change is making worse...without saying so? I counted 8 of those in my feed today, vs just 1 that named climate change directly. Why does this matter? Research shows that making this connection changes how people see it.

“Extreme heat waves and record breaking dry conditions” huh. Interesting. Wonder if there’s anything creating those conditions that we should be addressing raTHER THAN WORSENING!!!!

Canada's Pathways CCS project. > could cost more than twice the $16 billion original estimate and sequester only a fraction of the oilsands’ carbon pollution initially promised Who could have guessed? (Me, I could have guessed that, and I'm guessing costs will keep rising. Go renewable!)

A scientific idea can be both mainstream and valid & still serve a vested corporate interest’s need. We’ve seen tobacco, junk food, pharmaceutical, and fossil fuel companies selectively amplify such ideas with their funding dollars. I am not seeing critics engage much with passages like these.

Bitcoin below $60k this week, does that mean global demand for drugs and ransoms is dropping off? What's gonna happen next to the giant space heater of the internet?

Great new resource to follow in the spirit of climate.gov. I appreciate the simple climate climate dashboard. NOAA has not had the political independence necessary to speak openly about climate change in a while, this could be a great step.

Possibly the most interesting thing I have read all year. BP was so deeply involved with a landmark paper that at some point, the authors had offered co-authorship to a BP climate advisor! And that paper has changed how a generation of scholars thought about climate action, favoring CCS etc.

propublica.orgBeyond Denial: How Oil Execs Shaped a Landmark Climate StudyBP sponsored an elite Princeton research center to address the climate problem without getting off fossil fuels. Its key work, a paper known as “Wedges,” guided climate discourse for a generation.

Well, at least we're clear then on what Anthropic's priorities really are...

KetAnthropic JoshAI@ketanjoshi.co

This is the job ad Anthropic just posted for their Australian data centre 'energy lead'. No mentions of climate, sustainability, clean tech, emissions. Lots of explicit mentions of urgency, impatience and speed. A few cryptic but blatant references to behind the meter fossil fuel plants:

Russia's St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is underway, and the guest list includes the Taliban, far-right European parties, and former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. Really the who is who of people you would not want to have at your international conference.
