I’m weary reading of “natural” fire frequencies in forest, chaparral, savannas, grasslands, et al. as if our standard should be how fire behaves in the absence of people. I’m more interested in learning about the sustained historical burning frequencies in these places and much more interested in

collaborating to work out the burning regimes and other kinds of interactions that will revitalize cultures & languages and sustain healthy, mutually beneficial relationships among people and between people and the land, now and far into the future.

I learned so much from interviewing Glen Coulthard about the potentials (and challenges!) for decolonization through Indigenous land-based education. Check out our interview on @anothereducation.bsky.social:

In our new episode, we speak with @gscoulthard.bsky.social about indigenous land-based education at the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning. Our conversation builds on our previous discussion with Leanne Betasamosake Simpson ( @biidaasamose.bsky.social). Listen at: linktr.ee/anotheredisp...

The upshot here is: Shrubs grow rapidly post-fire, shading out sugar pine seedlings and favoring shade-tolerant white fir, thus perpetuating the forest composition created by fire suppression. Yo, FYI, the way to "control" those shrubs is to restore Indigenous cultural interactions with them.

Yes, and the way to do this is to live on the land, work it daily, & make friends with all the other residents — wild animals, invasive plants, everyone: “we have to get rid of all that extra fuel, and once a semblance of balance is restored, make friends with natural, lower-severity ground fires…”
