This is a poor attempt at gift wrapping blatant contempt and disregard for his wife’s autonomy in a joke. He just (proudly!) announced on camera that he coerced her into having a child she did not want in these conditions, and he clearly thinks it makes him charming and charismatic. Beyond vile.

JD Vance: "The Second Lady said, 'Well, you can have one of two things. You can be VP, or you can have a fourth child.' Ladies and gentlemen, I must be pretty persuasive, because I got both."

OH HELL YES. NEIL GORSUCH, THE LAST JUSTICE OF THE MOCHICANS, ASKS "Do you think Native Americans are citizens of the united states." IF YOU TRIP GORSUCH'S NATIVE AMERICAN WIRES, YOU LOSE. GOOD DAY, SIR!

This sounds silly (consumers not part of the economy), but there is an entire economic school of thought that prides itself on seeing the economy as this bloodless, separate entity from the world it serves. Reasoning like this allows you to disconnect from suffering by claiming “rationality.”

Hassett: "If the war were to be extended, it wouldn't really disrupt the US economy very much at all. It would hurt consumers, and we'd have to think about what we'd have to do about that, but that's really the last of our concerns right now."

I mean, who among us hasn’t accidentally used quotation marks in hitherto unknown ways on legal documents in order to spice things up? An understandable mistake; we’ve all been there. 🫠

On another document: Renfer claims that language he placed in quotation marks was intended as a general statement of the case and not an actual quotation. "This was a writing technique to liven up the prose."

Listen to the convo leading to that final line. He’s asked repeatedly if military members in the war zone can feel safe, given the Russia/Don situationship. He resorts to grandiose threats of violence after the bloviating & bootlicking fails; it’s 13yo boy performative. A pathetically small man.

Hegseth: "The only ones who need to be worried right now are Iranians who think they're going to live"

I did not, perhaps, pick a good time to start reading about the strange and self-abnegating granddaddy of our current American moment, but so far Tanenhaus is doing an excellent job of building this story. 12 chapters in, I find Bill to be an odd and tragic quagmire—we’ll see how it progresses.

You ask your teenager “Do you still have that substitute for geometry?” and they say “idk, I’ll get back to you.” Your response would probably be “Are you cutting class or something?!” because the appeal to ignorance is so nonsensical. They should know: they’re in a position to know.

BLUMENTHAL: Is the agent who shot Ms Martinez sill on the job? NOEM: Our officers conduct operations every day- B: Is he still on the job carrying a gun? N: I dunno B: Would you agree he shouldn't be? N: I'll get back to you B: I think Americans would find it absolutely terrifying if he is

This feels silly and laughable at first glance, but it’s interesting to me as yet another plot point in the larger marketing strategy of trying to masculinize basic adult tasks in order to make them palatable for men who view them as ‘girly.’ Hygiene, cleaning, etc. Here it’s cooking/food shopping.

“Boy kibble” is one of the hottest food trends on social media today. Fitness influencers are cooking up a simple combination of ground beef and rice for a quick, low-calorie hit. https://bit.ly/4aKn6FF

This is the winner every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Look, this is basically the rich narcissist version of seeing Jesus in the burn patterns of your toast or whatever. The only difference is that because he has millions of dollars, we’re supposed to act like it’s brilliant instead of certifiable.

These private group chats are just the lyrics to "Everybody" by Backstreet Boys. Dude: Am I original? All dude's friends: YEEEEEAAAAAHHH Dude: Am I the only one? Dude's friends: YEEEEAAAAHHH Dude: Am I sexual? Dude's friends: YEEEEEEAAAAAHHH

Lots of great details in @semaforben.bsky.social's latest; extremely helpful for mapping out who is influencing whom on the right. Have been thinking for a while that private groupchats are at least as crazymaking as public social media, and much harder to study.

I’m only about 120 pgs in, and oh my, this is a heavy book; it weighs on the spirit. The casual bigotry. The lauded and sanitized violence. The hypocritical religion. It makes me want to toss the book in rage, but I’ll finish. What an incredible journey they made. ❤️

You are up to date.
