October 19th marks the 5-year anniversary of my debut novel, A Feral Spark. On sale for 99 cents all month! An escaped genetically modified werewolf A woman who can control fire with her mind A scientist bent on professional glory Danger at every corner books2read.com/feralspark

#LGBTQWriteAThon Favorite spooky season pastime for my characters: Jenn and Marisol drink Mexican hot chocolate together while Mari gets naked and wears Day of the Dead face makeup. It's a whole sequence in A Work of Art. (Out next month!)

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 27: Today's question is brought to you by @spookyxpickle.bsky.social. Be sure to check out their Book Bazaar project! What is your or your character's favorite spooky season pastime? @queerwriters.bsky.social @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #lgbtqwriters

#LGBTQWriteAThon Goals! I am going to finish two short stories for submission calls due December 1st: "The Song Remains the Same" [hero returns home after war with a hole in his memory] "Centaur Stage" [centaur rock band can't get a hotel because they trash them] Then plan November novel: Handled

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 26: Goals day! What are your goals this week? Big or small, share and cheer on others for the week to come! @queerwriters.bsky.social @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #writingcommunity #lgbtqwriters

#QueerPrompts Asexual Awareness Week I've used Asexual characters in my works frequently, though not as often as my bisexual characters. In A Work of Art (to be released next month), one of my leads is a questioning character who doesn't pick a label in the story. But she's SUPER demisexual.

#QueerPrompts October 25: Asexual Awareness Week Begins & International Artist Day: Ace rep or art share

#LGBTQWriteAThon Check in (a day late) I forgot to do this yesterday. I achieved all stated goals this week. That means I got my manuscript submitted to my editor Wednesday morning. I quickly found out she was out of office for the week ahead, but I did it! I've also started 1 of 2 short stories

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 24: Check in day! How was your week? Did you accomplish your goals? @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #writingcommunity #lgbtqwriters

#LGBTQWriteAThon Most embarrassing memory? I don't know! with Jenn and Mari, I didn't look into the depths of their lives and memories. I'm sure other authors would. I suspect for Mari, it would probably be something related to depending on someone else and that being an outright fail.

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 23: What's your MC's most embarrassing memory that haunts them? @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #writingcommunity #lgbtqwriters

#WeeknightWriters A6 Self-promo I have a sapphic romance novella coming out next month. Hopefully, I'll have the date for you soon. In the meantime, celebrating 5 years since the publication of my debut novel this month. Get it for 99 cents! (V. close to sales record!) books2read.com/feralspark

#WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall A5 I'll be spending regular time in brainstorming mode, asking myself about scenarios and sequences of events until I have ideas to throw together like a Jackson Pollack art piece. (I'll also be working on 2 short stories. Wish me luck!)

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q5: What steps can you take in the next week to prepare for #FirstDraftFall? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall A4 Most of the middle in the end as I have not thought about it with specific events. Usually, I'm great at beginnings, and I see the end. The middle is like a pinball ricocheting around a game sometime. My structure isn't as bad as it used to be, though!

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q4: Are there any story aspects or plot points you're still trying to figure out before #FirstDraftFall? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters A3 #FirstDraftFall There will be more of an outline as I get into it, but it won't be rigidly structured. It might be "Scene X: Characters talk about first date" (or whatever it actually is). I've already been doing brain dumps on characters and events to put into a sequence.

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q3: Are you using a structured outline method for your #FirstDraftFall story? If your pantsing, do you have a general sense of direction of where your story will be going? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters A2 My #FirstDraftFall story is Handled, which came about by wondering in true speculative fiction fashion "what would happen if women's sexual health was treated as true healthcare"? Felt like a revolutionary idea that included sex work as a regulated industry w/ good benefits

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q2: What is your #FirstDraftFall story about? Share a little or as much as you feel like! #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters A1 For my #FirstDraftFall project, Handled, I fall under True Plantser. I've done extensive brain dumps into various digital and analogue documents. As many things as I've written, I always go off script by the end. I know what the end feels like, but regular detours at about 60%.

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q1: Since we're talking about plot, we figured it would be fun to see how you plot! Based on this nifty chart, what is your plotting/writing style alignment? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters Intro I'm JD, writer of Speculative BiFi and Romance. My WIPs this week are 2 short stories, one inspired by this chat and @catherinewinters.com almost a year ago exactly (Oct 23rd). As for my #FirstDraftFall project, I did planning on it in September and the first few days of Oct

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Hello #WeeknightWriters! Come on in, introduce yourself and your WIP, and let us know how your #FirstDraftFall planning is going! Are you plotting anything? Pantsing? Somewhere in between?

#LGBTQWriteAThon Tinglers! Real title: A Work of Art Tingler: Pounded in the butt by my attraction to my nude model when I'd never experienced attraction before, which probably makes me demisexual, but I don't pick any specific label for myself during the novella.

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 22: It's the one, the only, TINGLER YOUR TITLE day. Retitle your book like a Chuck Tingle book, aka "Pounded in the Butt by..." (or not pounded, we love our ace buckaroos) @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #writingcommunity #lgbtqwriters

#QueerPrompts Characters' worst nightmares Mari: Being stranded in the middle of traffic. Again. Jenn: Facing her inner demons and having to tell everyone else what she found.

🌈CJ Aralore@cjaralore.bsky.social

#QueerPrompts October 22: MC/character's worst nightmare

Dumb things I think of on my lunch break: If my editor is Canadian (she is) and I'm waiting for her approval of my edits, does her approval mean she's given me her "Eh-okay"?

#LGBTQWriteAThon For Mari, the monster is her unreliable car. And being dependent on someone else. For Jenn, the monster is the fear of looking too closely at herself and seeing someone she doesn't want to find

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 21: Today we're talking MONSTERS... AH.. I mean antags! Who is your antagonist? @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #writingcommunity #lgbtqwriters

#QueerPrompts International pronouns day None of the characters in the most recent story have done that. It isn't something that happens a lot for me, but I do tend to write cis characters. I think it will become more part of things from here, though.

🌈CJ Aralore@cjaralore.bsky.social

#QueerPrompts October 21: International Pronouns Day: Do your character(s) introduce themselves with their pronouns?

Me: Sends manuscript to editor. Finally. After 2 months of tackling revisions. Editor's email response: "I'm out of office from October 21 through October 28." Sigh. It's not like I hadn't already taken a long time anyway, but darn it!

I... finished my editorial revisions. I'm going to check it once again tonight to be sure I haven't missed anything. But I'm sending it off to my editor after 2 whole months of waiting. It just gook me some time to get to the heart of the story.

In 1991 a guy named George Holliday filmed some BTS footage of the T2 scene where Arnold arrives in the present - they were filming near his house and he just went out with his camcorder. A few hours later he saw cops pull a guy out of his car, and filmed the beating of Rodney King on the same tape.

Amy "Thunderjam" Chase@amythunderjam.bsky.social

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

#LGBTQWriteAThon Genre swap! If A Work of Art were an art heist story, Jenn would be a master forger, and Mari would be her femme fatale. They'd be working together to case the Winter Showcase and get the best pieces while laughing at the patriarchy and still having lots more graphic sapphic "segs"

#LGBTQWriteAThon Goals Yes, I know I've been saying already for 2 months now, but my goal is to finish my revisions so my editor can give me her stamp of approval. I had a breakthrough last night, and I think I can get this to her by Wednesday. OMG! If so, I'm next doing 2 short story prompts.

#LGBTQWriteAThon Line share "creepy" [sort of] She had a scarf and gloves with her when she came into the library, but they weren’t there now. What the hell? Was this a prank? Maybe she’d been too distracted by the dance of numbers that she hadn’t noticed any punk creeping around her study table.

#LGBTQWriteAThon October 18: line share day - creepy! @queerwriters.bsky.social @rebeccafrostwrites.com #queerwriters #writingcommunity #lgbtqwriters

#QueerPrompts No. Some might, just not in the stories I'm working on at the moment. (Not great choices on my part for Spooky Season.)

🌈CJ Aralore@cjaralore.bsky.social

#QueerPrompts October 18: Do any of your characters like being scared?

#QueerPrompts Curses or bad luck? Mari from A Work of Art thinks so! Her car is a piece of crap that leaves her stranded and vulnerable in a busy intersection. Otherwise, no magical or mystical curses.

#QueerPrompts October 17: Any curses or bad luck in your story?

#LGBTQWriteAThon Check In I'm not done with my editorial revisions for A Work of Art, BUT I've only got a few things left to do. I'm hoping to have a case of everything going faster at the end. I did work on my story story brainstorms, and have 2 solid concepts to work on next.

#LGBTQWriteAThon At first, I thought my artist Jenn (A Work of Art) might protect some priceless paintings, but I think she would save Mari first. She's already done that once. So she would do it again if it were necessary, though I hope for both of them that it wouldn't be.

#WeeknightWriters A5 The world of Handled is the contemporary USA, about 5 minutes into the future after Congress has passed several good health and wellness laws related to women's health specifically. What if it was healthcare? Writing the story to find out!

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q5: Tell us about your story world! Is it our world? Our world with added magic/science, or a completely different world? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters A4 Nothing, really. I always find character motivations the hardest part. It isn't directly world building, but the world the characters are in will affect their motivations.

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q4: What aspects of worldbuilding do you find most frustrating? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters A3 I enjoy seeing/plotting the repercussions. X thing (that is probably different from our world) is normal in your world? What happens after that? The ripples of change can have far-reaching effects, which are fun to track.

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q3: What aspects of worldbuilding do you enjoy most? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters A2 Oh, gosh. I don't know. I have the brain freeze by being asked a question I wasn't prepared for. I'll figure out an answer at 3:00am when no one cares. I am doubting I have a minimum requirement. I can just... go.

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q2: What aspects of worldbuilding do you absolutely need to have in place before starting a project? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters A1 Most of the time, characters come first, and I build the world to them. In my piece for #FirstDraftFall, the world came first, which was very exciting for me. I don't have everything figured out, but it feels like it has depth.

Weeknight Writers@weeknightwriters.bsky.social

Q1: Do you build your world to suit your story and/or characters or does the world come to you first? #WeeknightWriters

#WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall Intro I'm JD, writer of BiFi (bisexual fiction, usually SFF and Romance). Still in the editorial revisions for the novella I *will* release next month. (As God is my witness! /Scarlett O'Hara) I have a plan and timeline for Handled + ideas for 2 shorts & a novel

#LGBTQWriteAThon Never has my MC Ever... ...figured out her sexuality. She's been unconcerned about it and annoyed when other people bring it up. She's very demisexual coded as she does find her person in the story. They don't get together until the end when their professional relationship ends.

#QueerPrompts Spirit Day Seth from Handled is a former athlete. He would have considered himself an ally and brooked no slander or mistreatment of queer or trans folks. In his story, he later comes out as a baby bi, thanks in part to his also bi girlfriend. So more than an ally!

🌈CJ Aralore@cjaralore.bsky.social

#QueerPrompts October 15: Spirit Day: How would your character(s) deal with homophobia/transphobia?

#LGBTQWriteAThon Anxieties Mari from A Work of Art doesn't want to be beholden to anyone. It gives her a bundle of negative feelings when she imagines herself being a burden to others. her arc is learning to accept help.

Watched #DancingWithTheStars tonight. And now I have a plot bunny for a murder mystery in that world. I've even got a title. As absurd as the whole thing is, I could write this story. It would take longer, though, because I don't have experience writing Mystery as a genre. What a way to get some!
