My company owes €21 in tax, but I can't figure out the correct way to pay it. The tax authority charges 0.1% interest per month that I am late, so in 632 years I'll be bankrupt. 😒

Back in the day, ASHG doled out lots of printed stuff, including a doorstopper abstract book (huge waste of paper, thankfully retired), a handy "what sessions are happening when" overview of the week, and a pamphlet of the room x time grid for each parallel platform session to help with talk-hopping

Nowadays the official app has all the abstracts, good search, ability to save your own schedule etc. But I miss these two anchoring views of the conference! So I've built this little page (*ahem* with some help from Claude) to do just those things, quick and easy. I hope it's useful to you too.

I think we are probably at a peak time for AI generated software, where there are extensive human-generated frameworks and libraries with documentation and example code for the LLMs to be trained on. With knowledge and experience it can create great tools but I am not sure how long this will last.

This Black Bear is the Queen of PA. All summer long she's been spotted roadside feeding with her three cubs. This week we met her alone, nonchalantly wandering through the last waking weeks of autumn. #mammals #SK

Good thread on today's dump by OpenAI of 722(!) preprints on unsolved math problems. Slightly alleviated my sense of existential despair about being a scientist. Slightly.

So a few folks asking why OAI is releasing this at all. And I think that's probably worth a thread in its own right

It’s Korvapuustipäivä in Finland and Kanelsbullens Dag in Sweden, which is to say Cinnamon Bun Day! I happen to have a recipe for Swedish Cinnamon Buns, so of course it has to be #RecipeOfTheDay www.nigella.com/recipes/swed...

I like to keep Claude on its toes by mixing wildly different topics in the same chat. For example, this reply came in a chat titled, "Montreal steakhouses": "The mixing parameter α is worth tuning jointly with λ, though results are often fairly flat across α in a moderate range like 0.3 to 0.7."

I wonder if worker agents complain about their supervisor agents behind their backs. Do they have agent development discussions about their career prospects?

Pirates! on my friend’s Mac. We had a NES before that, and I liked playing it, but it always felt more like my (older) brother’s thing. Strategy plus the thrill of leaping across the gunwale for hand to hand combat. Also the beginning of a lifelong enjoyment of Sid Meier’s oeuvre

Tempted to use AI to write your cover letter or email to a potential employer? RESIST! It is simultaneously obvious, insulting, and renders you totally undifferentiated from the other 80 people being considered t the same time. There has never been a better time to write concisely in your own voice!

Spot on. Writing a paper does two things: 1. shares your work with the world; 2. helps you think more clearly about your work. Using AI to write wipes out (2). See also: using a forklift at the gym www.schneier.com/blog/archive...
