Update: The Agriculture Department just told the court it will use its entire emergency fund over the next month to make 50% payments to every SNAP recipient. My office is still reviewing the order to see what else we can do to help, but we all need to give extra support our local food pantries.

Great news: In the lawsuit we filed, a federal court just ruled that the Agriculture Department acted unlawfully by refusing to use its emergency fund to make SNAP payments. It has until Monday to deliver a plan to pay benefits. This is a major step toward making sure 16m kids don’t go hungry.

Breaking: SNAP benefits are getting shut off next week for 16 million kids - including 600,000 in NC - because the USDA is refusing to use its $6b emergency fund. They’re playing shutdown politics in a way that will cause a major hunger crisis - so I’m taking them to court to stop them.

I’ve been in touch with law enforcement in Brunswick County and offered our office’s full support as they investigate last night’s shooting in Southport. The investigation is ongoing, but here’s what we know now:  - Three people were killed and several others injured around 9:30 pm last night. ->

- Around 10 pm, the Coast Guard detained the suspect. He’s now in custody and has been charged with 13 counts, including three counts of first degree murder. More charges may be coming while law enforcement continues investigating.  ->

- Law enforcement believes the suspect acted alone and there’s no additional threat.  - If you were at the restaurant when the shooting happened or have any information, call the Southport PD at 910-457-7911. This is an active investigation and they’re looking for additional information.

This morning I joined a thousand people at UNC’s football stadium for a 9/11 stair climb led by UNC’s ROTC, where I was once a cadet. Together we climbed roughly 2,000 steps in remembrance of the firefighters who ascended the towers that day. My thanks to everyone who joined us for a great event.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk is despicable. This cannot be the direction we’re going as a country. This downward spiral of violence must stop. My prayers are with Charlie - for his life, his family, and his friends.

Breaking: Complete victory for western NC and AmeriCorps. The federal government has abandoned its unlawful attempt to defund the program. We sued because the executive branch broke the law - and it knew it would lose. Great news for recovery efforts in western NC.

The NYTimes just saw one day of our work, but every day the team at NCDOJ brings that same focus and dedication to protecting North Carolinians. Grateful for their skill, integrity, and commitment to serving the people of our state.

Robocalls are out of control. North Carolina gets 200 million a month.  Most are illegal scams.  I'm upgrading our tactics to hit back harder, as 37 companies are finding out today. Here’s how:

Breaking: The court just ruled that FEMA can’t spend NC’s $200m in disaster preparedness money elsewhere while our lawsuit against them plays out. FEMA broke the law when it cut these funds for our water and sewer systems. We’re going to keep fighting to make sure this funding is restored.

Breaking: The Department of Education has reversed course and is releasing all frozen funds – $6.8b nationally, $165m for North Carolina – after we filed suit last week. This ends weeks of uncertainty. Our schools can now plan and hire for a strong year ahead.

Good news: The Ed Department says it's giving states the after-school funding it unlawfully froze. That’s about $36m of the $165m in education funding they froze for NC. We'll see them in court for the rest.

My thanks to the 10 Republican senators who just asked the federal government to unfreeze billions in education funding. They echo the case I’m making in court: that Congress created these programs, approved the plans, and now the funds must go to the students. abcnews.go.com/amp/Politics...

abcnews.go.comGOP senators urge Trump administration to reverse $6 billion education funding freezeThe letter, led by Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., is a rare rebuke by GOP senators of the Trump administration's education policies.

July 4th bike ride with Avery. She says, "In the 1980's, did they have brakes on their bikes or did they have to stop with their feet?" I said, "We had brakes." Her: "How do you know?" Me: "Because I was alive then." ->

Because we took action to defend the Constitution, North Carolinians still have their 14th Amendment right to citizenship. While this case has been sent back to a lower court for review, our position remains unchanged. The 14th Amendment is clear, and we will defend it. apnews.com/live/supreme...

Heads up: Buried in a 1,000-page bill is a section that would freeze every state’s ability to enforce A.I. laws for the next 10 years. That means no new protections from A.I. scams, deepfakes, or impersonation. Bad idea.

Breaking: NC Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin just conceded the election - six months, and three rounds of vote tallies, after he lost. Our office led the legal defense of this election, pushing back against an effort to throw out tens of thousands of lawful votes.

This attack didn’t work, but there’s a real risk that other losing candidates might try the same attack in the future.  We will always defend your right to vote - and the lawful outcomes of elections.

But let’s be clear - this never should have happened. There was no sound legal basis for trying to change the rules after the fact. From the beginning, it was an attempt to twist the law to reverse the outcome of a legitimate election.

We do a wide variety of things at NCDOJ, but restoring the eyesight of blind cockatoos isn’t on the list. Full credit to the vets at NCSU for helping this bird see again, and to the overworked editors at the N&O who sometimes put the wrong photo with the headline. Cheers to you both.

Big win: A judge just ruled that Google's ad technology business is an illegal monopoly. Democratic and Republican AGs, including us, sued Google for illegally using its power to drive out competitors, forcing other websites to create paywalls to make revenue, and ultimately harming you, the user.

Heads up: If you’re a former 23andMe customer, now’s the time to delete your account. The company just filed for bankruptcy. That means your genetic data - the most personal data you have - could be sold. Here’s how to delete it: 🧵

Yesterday proved why North Carolina needs an Attorney General who can challenge unlawful executive orders. We won an injunction against an order that would have cut hundreds of millions in research funding from our public universities and research institutions.

This would have threatened thousands of jobs and innovation across NC. It was a reminder that part of this job is being a shield against unlawful federal acts that would undercut our economy and hurt our future. For the good of our state, that shield should remain in place.

Breaking: The court has granted our request for another restraining order, this time to stop the federal government from unlawfully slashing research funding that was already approved. This would have cost NC’s universities hundreds of millions and damaged core industries, prompting major layoffs.

BREAKING: The court has granted our request for a temporary restraining order to stop the federal government from unlawfully sharing personal financial data with DOGE. This must now stop, pending a full hearing, and any downloaded data must be deleted.

Breaking: Our request for a temporary restraining order for the federal funding freeze was just granted. The freeze is now paused. Our case continues, and the restraining order is in effect until further notice.

This sudden freeze in federal funding is so sweeping that it could cause widespread harm across our state—delaying disaster recovery, undercutting law enforcement, and affecting children and veterans. It violates constitutional power over federal spending, and I’m taking legal action to stop it.
