So I basically never remember my dreams; the only ones I do remember are the ones that wake me up, which tend to be stress nightmares and those are always the same (insect and parasite infestations, very bad ☹️)

When I was on an SSRI in college, the craziest side effect was that I suddenly DID start remembering my dreams… and they were all incredibly mundane realistic things that not only could have happened but did happen regularly, which got very confusing lmao

Like I’d dream about my roommate telling me about her homework, or eating pancakes in the dining hall, or waiting for the bus. What I’m saying is that I think my brain is busted and I’m annoyed I don’t have cool dreams and if I do, they are obliterated immediately before waking

One of my favorite things in medieval history is when there’s like, a clear changeover point within a family from decidedly very old Frankish names to ones that read as considerably more modern. “Matilda, daughter of Countess Gunnor” and “Emma, daughter of Albereda” like okay sure

Yep! Because I read different books at bedtime, I can actually confirm that my 15-20 minutes before bed accounts for 15-20 books in any given year. I'm reading a lot more than that besides, but I know plenty of people who would be happy to read 15 books a year. Well: 15 minutes a day to start

This post is unavailable.

Obviously some books are denser than others - I've found that ~50 pages of Moby Dick consistently takes me closer to 90 minutes because I'm taking notes. But I don't feel like I am spending a CRAZY amount of time reading when I've done 100 books a year... because that's less than 2 hours a day

(The OTHER side of this is: do NOT look at the state of cleanliness in my house, do NOT look at my canceled gym memberships (though I can and do read while walking on the treadmill!), and do NOT look at my refusal to spend more than 20 minutes in the kitchen cooking because I just don't want to)

I stopped at the bookstore quick on my way home (needed paperback copy of Paradise Lost)(…obviously) and this sign is up and I was like OHHHHH this is why YouTube was pushing ACOTAR content on me all day

Today I did MORE OF THE SAME, BABY, MORE OF THE SAME. Except I finished the newsletter, I didn’t start a new one. You know what I mean. Also I’ve stared at the word “squire” so long (because that was the main role sheet I was working on) it no longer looks like a real word. So that’s something.

Today I did some assorted minor clean-up on both Greatness and The Squire's Sword, just making things a little tidier, clearer, etc. And then I started writing the next newsletter because it's almost the end of the month oh god how did that happen

the funny thing I did not think about here in terms of my creative habits is that I also still go to the same coffee shop where I went to my first real nanowrimo meetup and where I met all my friends

Jen 🔜 Metatopia@jenkatwrites.bsky.social

I won't pretend it was perfect by any means, but I do think my years of doing nanowrimo did two big things for me in setting up my long-term creative habits, which is that 1) I get In the Zone really easily, and 2) when I am In the Zone, I am both focused and decisive

in 2014 I was like "wow I don't have any friends I should make some friends" and I went to a nanowrimo meetup and I made a bunch of friends and a bunch of them were also RPG people so we started gaming together and now I still hang out with them every week 12 years later lmao

this is why you cannot trust advice from me about like, how to make friends or find a gaming group or whatever. my experience is "go somewhere literally one time and be nice and there will be nice people there and that's it"

Aw man :(

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

gonna do one of those year-end in/out trend posts, but it's just extremely mundane shifts in my daily habits. OUT: shower gel strawberry jam on toast IN: bar soap apricot jam on toast you get the idea

(the in/out trend posts are very annoying to me)(I would not say I am immune to trend-chasing, far from it, but you know, being a creature of habit and also in my 30s and not my 20s... makes it a lot easier lmao)

I really want to make 2 hour games, because I know it's easier for people to find 2 hours to play than 4, but what I actually end up making is 4 hour games with easy pause points where you could choose to continue or to split it into two 2-hour sessions. Games with checkpoints I guess lmao

Ages ago, in college, me and a few of my friends read a... pretty shoddy book about how ancient patriarchal societies were more focused on writing and matriarchal ones were more image-centric, and how the rise of writing systems subjugated women, who are OBVIOUSLY just inherently worse at that 🤮

I should learn that something sold as feminist fiction isn’t for me when they say shit about how the author is free from patriarchal constraints like “plot” and “character” and “prose” like, girl what’s left. go make a music video if you want me to infer meaning from a series of semi-related images

It always feels so condescending, and maybe this is a me-problem because my single biggest pet peeve in the world is being condescended to. I regret to report that I am, despite being a woman, an independent rational adult with a thinking brain and a sense of pride.

Anyway we were all mad at it because none of us were of the "woo woo divine feminine" type idea that it felt very close to, and we didn't think our special woman brains needed pretty pictures to understand things while the big boys got to use their words.

So yeah I'm not *wild* about a certain subset of criticism that's like "the story is meandering and unclear because it's feminist. The characters are inconsistent with no real identities because it's feminist. The language is simplistic because it's feminist." Get outta here with that

(I was trying to remember if this had been assigned for a class, but I don't think it was, because I was rarely in the same classes as my friends, it was a big school and we were all in different majors. I think maybe we found it at the big free book tent at the start of the semester...?)

Kinda rocks that in A/M book two, they’re on a ship with two young female passengers when they get taken by a privateer and the two girls immediately disguise themselves as midshipmen and start carrying powder and shot for the ship’s guns. Girls rule etc etc

You know, if I was negotiating with another family to marry my daughter to their son, and then that family summarily executed my husband, I probably would not have my daughter go through with the marriage anyway, but medieval women were built different

This guy’s last name also appears variously as “Bigod” (you know, of the Norfolk Bigods 😌) and I keep reading that like good old Jim Ross is saying it. BAH GAWD ITS THE EARL OF NORFOLK WITH A STEEL CHAIR

I generally have a lot of patience and sympathy for door-to-door canvassers and even salesmen, but it is dinnertime on a sunday and they are knocking at my door, is nothing sacred. may we not have one day to be left alone.

I got slammed by my flu shot/covid booster, and I usually have no reaction at all, so I was really surprised by how much I was feeling it this morning. I felt a little better after taking a long nap, but a LOT better after eating a big bowl of ice cream. There's lessons here, clearly

whose job is it to teach the new generation pop girls that they can sing from the diaphragm. that they have a chest voice and not just a head voice. that guy isn't doing his job. I assume this is a compromise with increasing expectations around choreography, but we have lost our way man

I love dance, I think it's fine when pop stars are dancers first and singers second, and also I think if you gotta tone the choreo down a little so they can really open up their ribcages and not force everything through their noses, that would be. a good thing to do.
