Greenblatt makes $1m/year to run an organization with a $150m/year budget, and he's decided to be a reply guy to the mayor. Also, I would be shocked if Greenblatt has even been to Brighton Beach in the last decade.

The basis of Romney's 47% claim was that people who pay no federal income tax would always vote for Democrats – despite all the evidence that lots of those voters are Republicans.

James Medlock@jdcmedlock.bsky.social

Ethics aside, this take could use some contact with reality. Biden's expanded CTC didn't motivate recipients to vote to maintain it. Trump offered $5000 checks and it hurt him in the polls. The empirical claim that welfare creates single issue voters just doesn't hold up.

Ready for #wolandsball November! I just need to decide which of these translations to read. (Burgin/O'Connor is my wife's old copy, and shows the wear and tear of having been moved many times in the last 30 years; Pevear/Volokhonsky is a nice new library copy.) 👿

The really useful AI for this wouldn't be one that can analyze "photos of the fliers that came home crumpled in a backpack" (who's taking those photos, anyway?), but one that can take the information from the 7 different apps and emails lists that the schools use and combine them in one place.

Oh, cool – it's another "let AI do the fun stuff so you can spend more time at work" product, but now for women whose husbands don't do any parenting.

I just tried this out, and Dazzle replied "your child is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life".

I took marathons way too seriously when I was a runner to ever do something like this, but I hope at least one runner will hop off the course for 5 minutes to cast their vote and then put the sticker on their medal.

This just ends up being the Total Perspective Vortex, where we all have to deal with essentially 100% of the responses being “not familiar with/not enough information to form an opinion”.

"If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me." – Moby-Dick, Chapter 1, "Loomings" 🐋

Cat Hicks@grimalkina.bsky.social

One of the more relatable themes throughout human history for me as a person living near the ocean is that living near the ocean makes you kind of insane. "Oh that's The Sea, my long-term girlfriend" you find yourself thinking and it's not really a joke

The whole point was to generate publicity! There were individual campaigns that failed because local authorities had the sense to not overreact in a way that attracted lots of press attention – but plenty more where, like the IDF, the cops just couldn’t stop themselves from being stupid.

"The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't take selfies and post tweets." Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.

The ADL finally chimes in… with one very short post: "The term 'Shylock' is rooted in a longstanding antisemitic stereotype. Regardless of intent, its use can reinforce harmful tropes about Jews and normalize language that has long been used to target the Jewish community."

Weird to act like these aren’t still popular when four of them have had major tv/movie adaptations within the last decade.

Bangers that I read as a kid that I wish people would read now: 1) CS Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia series 2) Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time series 3) Everything Tolkien ever wrote (including the Simarillion) 4) Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth 5) Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials

Interesting that the bot cuts off here. The full sentence ends "and indeed I never did see so much, or could have imagined there had been any religion in the whole world so absurdly performed as this."

But, Lord! to see the disorder, laughing, sporting, and no attention, but confusion in all their service, more like brutes than people knowing the true God, would make a man forswear ever seeing them more and indeed I never did see so much.

This is really cool. Also, that's not the regular title page from the first edition (see image below), which means this version must have been printed for Melville before his last minute renaming of the book. 🐋

There’s a fun scene like this in “The Final Countdown” (1980), with a couple of F-14s overwhelming a pair of Mitsubishi Zeroes.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

So out of curiosity I looked it up and a hawker hurricane has a top speed of 340 mph and has to visually track targets for gun kills at 1200 feet which seems like a problem when you’re fighting an F-16 with a top speed of 1,300 which can kill you from 100+ miles away

Also, what we may have had, at least in part, is a very big shift in the species composition of biomass without a substantial increase in the earth’s aggregate carrying capacity of all biomass. Apparently, until c. 1750, whale biomass exceeded human biomass.
