As the Chair of the Senate Public Safety Committee, I recognize how restorative opportunities are proven to reduce recidivism. That's why the State is investing in programs like CROP, providing reentry support and job training to formerly incarcerated individuals.

On #LarryItliongDay, we celebrate a pioneer who helped build a labor movement that was rooted in solidarity across cultures and communities, and whose legacy continues to inspire workers, organizers, and advocates for justice across California.

Our local, state, and federal leaders and community organizations are united in our defense of our immigrant communities. Thank you Senator Alex Padilla, Mayor Barbara Lee, and stakeholders for your advocacy on affordability and access to housing and healthcare.

I joined a sold out screening of Minnesota Neighbors, a moving documentary by Not in Our Town about communities coming together to support one another during ICE's brutal actions that murdered two US citizens. Thank you to the many East Bay residents who made this film possible.

"'I applaud Governor Newsom’s consideration of commuting the sentences of those on death row and encourage him to follow through on this,' said state Sen. Jesse Arreguín, D-Berkeley, the Senate Public Safety Committee chair."

Our community honors the life and legacy of Jeanne Gibson, a welder in WWII at age 18 who worked tirelessly to preserve the history of Rosie the Riveters, frequently volunteering at Richmond's Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park. Thank you for your service.

Today I oversaw progress on the construction of the Middle Mile Broadband Network by the CA Department of Technology. Fiber optic cables are being installed on the Bay Bridge, which will provide equitable high-speed broadband service to all Californians.

I am monitoring the fire at Panoramic Hill. Thanks to a quick, multi-agency response from Oakland, Berkeley, East Bay Regional Park District, Alameda County, and CAL FIRE, forward progress has been stopped. No evacuations have been ordered and just one structure is threatened.

Troubling reports of ICE using excessive force here in the East Bay is the latest example of the cowardice of the Trump Admin, using fear and intimidation to terrorize our communities. In California, if you violate the law, you will be held accountable.

Today we reflect on 35 years since the Oakland Hills Firestorm, and remember the 25 lives we lost. October is also California Firefighter Appreciation Month. Thank you to those who fearlessly put their lives on the line to protect our communities.

I have secured $1M to support Berkeley's upgrades and modernization of its Communications Center to make its 911 dispatch faster and more effective. This builds upon progress being made through Measure FF, approved by voters in 2020 to improve emergency response and preparedness.

The Trump Administration's frivolous lawsuit attempting to block vote counting is the latest shameful attack to undermine and suppress our democracy. California stands ready to protect our elections. Know your voter rights and vote early.

The Trump administration on Thursday sued California and Los Angeles County to try to force elections officials not to count potentially 20,000 registered voters’ ballots, in an extraordinary intervention 19 days before a consequential national election. cal.news/4dBb4PW 📸 Keith Birmingham

The Alameda County Office of Education's Green Careers Guidance Initiative is helping students transition from high school to skilled trades, breaking down barriers in industries working on climate resiliency. I was proud to vote for AB 1590, helping fund programs like this.

Thank you Trust for Public Land for meeting with me to discuss ways to preserve outdoor spaces. Trust for Public Land has created over 5,500 new outdoor spaces, preserving 4 million acres nationwide, and I look forward to adding Golden Gate Fields to that list.

I joined the Alameda Labor Council to provide a legislative update on the work happening in Sacramento to support workers. I am proud to have passed multiple pro-labor bills this year including SB 1383, which protects labor standards in large construction projects.

Today we honor the rich history and traditions of our nation's indigenous peoples. The history of Indigenous Tribes that is still being written today is an intrinsic part of Californian and American history and must be preserved. #IndigenousPeoplesDay

Let's be clear, Trump's threat to terrorize our communities right before the midterms is an attempt to undermine the election. California stands ready to protect our residents and democracy against these shameful and reckless acts of intimidation.

From the first arrival of Filipinos at Morro Bay in 1857 to the Farmworkers Movement, Filipino Americans have made a lasting impact in California. On Filipino American History Month, we honor the generations of Filipino Americans who have shaped our culture and history.

I am proud to have secured $2M in state funding to support new programs addressing human trafficking in Oakland. This investment will give frontline workers the tools they need to intervene while expanding support and opportunity for survivors.

This will build upon Oakland's efforts in bringing crime rates to historically low levels. I am thankful for Mayor Barbara Lee, Department of Violence Prevention Director Dr. Holly Joshi, and Samuel Merritt University for the incredible work they are doing to keep Oakland safe.

Over 80 years after WWII, our local Rosie the Riveters continue to inspire us, including 103 year old June Beesley, who worked as a welder in Richmond at the age of 18. As America celebrates 250 years, we must preserve the stories of this essential part of our history.

Congrats HiiWAV Oakland Tech Week on a successful showcasing of technology start ups and community. I got to meet and recognize the incredible contributions of Black engineers, organizations and small businesses making a difference and bringing together people and innovation.

What should the future hold for a waterfront park at Golden Gate Fields? With state funding of $125M to acquire the site, I look forward to a robust public process to decide its future. This is an opportunity to create something that will benefit all Californians for generations.

Today was a celebration of community at Urban Tilth, where I was proud to announce the allocation of $1M to support their efforts to help build a more sustainable, healthy, and just local food system in West Contra Costa County.

For 50 years, StopWaste has been a leader in environmental sustainability, supporting efforts to increase conservation, reduce waste, and promote recycling. Honored to recognize the achievements of StopWaste, and look forward to what's to come in the next 50 years.

Thank you BWOPA for inviting me to be a part of the Civic Power Academy, shedding light on how to get civically engaged in all levels of government. We want to hear from you; public participation is key to having a government that works for you.

Thank you Goldman School of Public Policy for inviting me as a guest lecturer for the Legislative Drafting for Policymakers course. I had a great time engaging with our future leaders on the inner workings of state government and how people can get involved with policy making.

East Oakland will soon be home to Oakport, a visionary proposal to transform the community with a 65-year affordable lease for nonprofits, the largest shoreline restoration in Oakland's history, and infrastructure improvements. Thank you Supply Bank, EBMUD, and all those involved.

This month, Fruitvale is home to the tallest La Catrina in the United States. Arriving from Mexico City, the iconic symbol of Día de los Muertos also reflects the generations of migrants who have built community in Oakland. Thank you Unity Council for making this possible.

Thanks to the City of Richmond, Richmond Housing Authority, and EAH Housing, Kevin Plaza completed a major renovation of its 138 affordable units for seniors and people with disabilities. Preserving housing, along with production and protections, are essential for stable housing.

With the securing of $125M for the creation of a waterfront park at Golden Gate Fields, we are asking the community for their input and vision for the site. Thank you to the City of Albany and East Bay Regional Park District for hosting a town hall to hear from the public.

When the community works together, we can achieve incredible results. The opening of Sen Lake, with 91 units of affordable housing near Lake Merritt, is an achievement that reflects the tenacity and determination of local leaders and advocates who made this day possible.
