I know Google likes to kill its products. But... like this?

TechCrunch@techcrunch.com

Google is transforming Search from a list of links into an AI-powered experience filled with conversational answers, autonomous agents, and interactive interfaces — a shift that could further reduce traffic to publishers across the web.

The AGI cult/non-profit Anthropic? Nah.

Alon (they/them)@alonlevy.bsky.social

Free advice for America: please ban AI, we in Europe need more tech jobs and Trump's harassment of Anthropic isn't enough by itself to get them to move here and help our economy.

Yeah, I can see how asking Glazotron9000 if your page looks janky instead of an actual human can save you time.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

While lots of people complain about the risk of reduced software quality from AI slop code contributions, I see a lot of opportunity to improve test automation using AI. You can actually automate "eyeball this UI change to see if it looks janky" which was quite infeasible prior to AI coding agents.

Perfect fit (pejorative)

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

Every week I learn I’m a n00b when it comes to leveling up with AI. I’m hiring and an internal candidate sent a Claude Code generated “cover letter” with a visual of our system architecture plus 3 feature recommendations based on analyzing our codebase. I was speechless.

In b4 the nagged employees start to automatically generate status reports with LLMs and actual information gets drowned in work-slop induced noise.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

The majority of the work in creating a status report pre-AI is nagging people to tell you their status and compiling it into a document. That you can outsource to an agent. “Is the project on track, at risk or off track and if so how do we mitigate risk if the latter?” is where the PM adds value

"It's all vibes, anecdotes, trust me bro" I repeat as a mantra searching where the smell of burnt toast is coming from.

jake@yetanotheruseless.com

but I've also seen people who have strong rigorous scientific-method systems skills, but *zero* CS background build solid, high performance systems this way.

Crackheads not being afraid for their jobs at companies where taking crack is an explicit requirement.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

This article strikes at the heart of the weirdness in the software industry right now. Programmers making $200K+ no longer write code but instead supervise Claude Code which writes the code for them. But instead of being afraid for their jobs, they are excited by how much more productive they are.

Working hypothesis: People most amenable to working with AI "agents" are those who like managing people, but can't actually appreciate people.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

A study of 1,488 workers using AI tools showed interesting results. Mental fatigue rose when using 3+ tools and overseeing multiple AI agents. However, automating repetitive tasks reduced burnout. I’ve argued managing people best prepares you to work with AI agents. Now backed up by research.

Ugh, I am starting to regret looking at the actual METR data. It's just so noisy. And, being a hack, I haven't done anything approaching ...um... basic statistical analysis, in a while. Putting it on ice for now and focusing on my own stuff.

AI is about vibes part infinite.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

Seeing 50 and 60-year-old HN devs share how Claude Code reignited their passion for building software and solving problems over the framework rat race is exactly how I feel. I haven’t felt this energized in years. Detractors argue AI removes the craft and familiarity with implementation details.

Welp. Here I am, on Saturday afternoon, reading the original METR study, instead of wasting time on more enjoyable things. At least my cat is keeping me company (for now)

Fun fact I didn't know: the tasks were not randomized AI / no AI. But AI not allowed / AI allowed. Meaning devs didn't have to use AI if they thought it might slow them down. Don't know (yet) if anyone took advantage of that, but if they did, that would bias AI "speedup" upward.

3/ Found the answer: "all but 16.4% of allowed cases used AI" Okay then, almost one sixth, nothing to see here... BTW, that's out of 44 valid screen recordings, so 7.2 cases? Wat

Open source developer: "I made this thing. You can use it for free, the only restriction is, you can't use it in commercial projects." Random asshole on the internet: "How fucking dare you!"

Sister, ew. Stop licking that boot. You don't know where it's been.

The “no one is required to use tools that work” crowd clearly has very limited exposure to how people with high job security or low scrutiny treat learning things.

Productivity of LLM's is pure vibes example ...

Agent Broflake@abroflake.bsky.social

For coding it is insane. I did something in about an hour last night that would have been a weeks long project, and that's not counting the immense amount of time with other people doing reviews and meetings about how to handle it.

AI bro: "You suck, because you refuse to embrace LLM's and coding agents and you will be left behind!" Joke's on you, I suck because my brain doesn't work half the time.

Note to self: Automated tests do not prevent bugs in code that is not covered by them. Also, tests ensure that your code works according to assumptions. That doesn't mean those assumptions are correct.

100% vibes

Duncan Weldon@duncanweldon.bsky.social

100% this. Last week: AI pulled together some data for me from 10 different national stats agencies. Took 5 mins. Would have taken me maybe two-three hours. I spent that time doing more work with it.

You shouldn't anthropomorphize computer programs. But also I lost way too much time today because Pylint tried to gaslight me that my method call was missing arguments.

The best improvement of my new 2024 model year Lenovo work laptop over my previous 2015 model year one is that thanks to having thinner screen bezels it has two inches bigger screen (16" vs 14") with only slightly larger overall size. So much better if you actually want to use it on the go.

You'd think two inch difference isn't that significant, but for me it's a difference between being a pain and being actually pretty usable. (I'm pretty sure there's a sex joke in there, but I don't want to think too hard about it...)

*dude working in IT, land of the mythical man-hour and "story points are not supposed to be a unit of time", where measuring productivity is a right shit show*: "Using a clanker makes me exactly 40% more effective! Everyone else will be left in the dust!" My brother in christ, shut the fuck up.

Imagine being so antifascist you arrive at a version of Thiel's "democracy is incompatible with freedom" shtick. With "friends" like these...

Man, I didn't want to be negative about LLM's for once, I really did. But if you want to show off a "cool new thing" and you have to caveat the only example with: "Look I know this is complete trash, but..." what the fuck am I supposed to think about that? simonwillison.net/2025/Oct/16/...

simonwillison.netClaude Skills are awesome, maybe a bigger deal than MCPAnthropic this morning introduced Claude Skills, a new pattern for making new abilities available to their models: Claude can now use Skills to improve how it performs specific tasks. Skills …

I saw someone today unironically argue that "trying to fix disabled people" (like helping people in wheelchairs walk again or blind people see and such) is eugenics and leads directly to genocide. I haven't felt this imbued with the Spirit of Centrism in a long time.

Brno discontinued and then restored tram service on it's north-south axis through the old town some years back. What makes it interesting is that there is also a small circle of tram lines around the center that serve most of the tram traffic.

Oxford Street pedestrianization will be an interesting case of how pedestrians and bus users (sometimes the same people!) could be at odd. It's the busiest bus throughfare in London, and there is no obvious equivalent replacement for the routes using it.
