I asked ChatGPT to create a cover for a course catalogue of a "university for people who have given up thinking due to AI over-reliance". To be fair, this is a pretty good take -- and more subtle than I expected... #aislop #criticalthinking #deskillling #chatGPT #philsky

I don’t think Trump is going to appreciate his minions conceding he’s made the White House look like the Cheesecake Factory but pretending they like it that way.

David S. Bernstein @dbernstein.bsky.social

You really need to work hard to be the most obsequious member of Trump’s cabinet — by, for instance, eating lunch at Cheesecake Factory and alerting Fox Business, so they can interview you in defense of Obama’s joke about the White House decor. Well done Secretary Bessent! Your move, Doug Burgum!

But if the right did that seriously it would just be boring. You would check if El Sayed - or Bernie or AOC - is like Stalin (same ideas? same pattern of rise to power? same political-social-economic environment structurally?) and be like ‘nope’ all down.

I mean yeah, Bernie and Beria were both ‘men of the left. But it hardly follows that Bernie’s Vermont must be currently ground under the heels of some latter day Green Mountain Boys analog of the NKVD. If you want to study history, facts matter!

He seems to have a picture of communism on which we have Havel’s greengrocer over here and a gulag archipelago over there. The one leads to the other. But in fact the history is a bit richer.

On the left there have been these serious debates about the whole MAGA-fascism thing. You can pull historical definitions of ‘fascism’ and use them as checklists and there are a lot of checked boxes thanks to Trump - but not all.

But seriously. You would think it would occur to Dreher that a serious film about the horrors of communism would only underscore how few strong structural and historical analogies there are between Stalin’s Soviet Union/Mao’s China/Pol Pot’s Cambodia and the contemporary US.

A 3-legged stool: 1) Trump lies effortlessly and endlessly, so the media can't keep up even if they try; 2) to the extent that Trump isn't self-consciously shameless, per 1) he is genuinely self-deluded; 3) D's feel obliged to treat the R's as still a normal party, i.e. as NOT defined by 1&2.

That one man can maintain such oceanic outflow of conscious lies without draining that (can it be bottomless?) well of self-deception is astounding. Any mere mortal egotist should tip over into being basically an animatronic set of 'tells' he's a liar (Rubio) or fall into fanaticism (Vance). No.

MEDIA: is a vote for a you a vote for the Trump agenda? REPUBLICANS: [shaking head, hand gestures] perdóname, no ingles, no ingles!

WELKER: Is a vote for you a vote for the Trump agenda? MIKE ROGERS: Um, I'm apologizing. I'm having some difficultly in my earpiece. But is a vote for you? I'm not sure. I'll tell you what a vote for me is. It's a great day for the state of Michigan

Here’s what I wish Bash would say: You have said you see your job as AG is to work for President Trump. You are his personal attorney, as you were when he was out of office. You pursue the goals he directs you to pursue. And you direct DOJ. newrepublic.com/post/216921/...

Given we are in this new system in which we have corrected the error of thinking DOJ should be independent, what new steps have you taken, either on your own initiative or at Trump’s direction, to restore the trust of Democrats in Trump’s willingness to accept free and fair election results?

You say it has always been a mistake to regard DOJ as independent of the Executive and cite John Roberts 2024 majority opinion in support of that. But if this is right it means there is no federal agency charged with ensuring free & fair elections rather than working to help the party in power win.

You say you are concerned about voters in Alaska being unable to trust one election as free and fair. But if DOJ doesn’t work for all Americans, it works for Trump, why should any Americans who don’t trust Trump trust you or DOJ?

Democrats are laughing at Republicans for saying it's elitist to laugh at Trump for making the White House look like Cheesecake Factory. But the fact is: if Saddam Hussein had opened a Cheesecake Factory instead of what he did do the Iraq War would never have happened and we'd be better off today.

Fake Saddam Hussein Cheesecake Factory where everyone can see it is better than Colin Powell selling fake Saddam Hussein Yellowcake. Trump is restoring transparency and trust in our foreign policy after establishment politicians of both parties squandered that trust.

(Since I’m actually still working away on a vast trading card set like this - more philosophy, but not just - this is very inspirational. I had a nice chat with the flea market lady, who had lots of nice stuff.)

One cause I am very passionate about is: the tyranid hive mind should not have emotions that we can recognise. It should be complete Lovecraftian horror, too vast and complex for our concepts to limn or our minds to comprehend.

It’s not just charges of ‘heretic’ against Talarico - which deserves a follow-up question. He’s now convinced Mises Institute types that markets don’t work and you have to have politically wise planners fix market prices at the right level, as socially beneficial results will show them to have been.

It’s Stakhanovitism but for betting markets. We need heroic investors who will be even MORE rationally efficient at not leaving free money on the table than a merely rationally efficient market of normal investors would normally be.

The only fancy, pricey writing implement or accessory that actually provides added value equal to the price is: box of Blackwing pencils.

The New York Times wrote articles that were like "the impossible-to-characterize elusive politics of Elon Musk / he's lost interest in politics" right before he became *literally the largest GOP donor in history* the next election cycle. Twice. Two times!

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

This would be the most any person has donated in any election cycle. And #2 is also Musk, in 2024.

Heaven is like a Turning Points rally where everyone gets along - all the right-wing factions - and God is this sort of Old Man Charlie figure. Politics is downstream from negative polarisation; tribal religious affiliation is downstream from politic;, and orthodoxy is downstream from all of it.

If I were Vivek Ramaswamy, a nonwhite Hindu candidate trying to persuade his party's racist and Christian nationalist base to forget those differences and vote for him, I would simply not do a "How do you do, fellow Christians? Here's a heresy!"

But all the opinions are anti-liberal, since all the liberals are anti-American. This is obviously a bigger tent that just Christianity, so there's room for Hinduism, if it's partisan.

This is why Rod Dreher gets furious at Talarico for 'God is non-binary' - perfectly theologically orthodox by historical theological standard, except the tribal-partisan one. And Dreher doesn't mind it at all when far-right Israelis say 'Jesus was a false prophet'. Everyone has an opinion in Heaven!

Joel Berry is constantly sparring with even further right types on ex-Twitter and it’s worth noting: his ‘we need to preserve constitutional liberty’ stance makes less sense than his interlocutor’s ’we need fascism now’ stance. Because Berry accepts the fascist premise.

If you believe anyone on the left must be a totalitarian communist who wants to oppress everyone else on principle, then, honestly, you can’t think that anything but right-wing authoritarianism, to counter that, makes sense.

Here we see the intellectual emptiness of the ‘but the left is worse so Trump is the lesser of two evils’ center-right, anti-anti schtick. If normie liberals are all worse than Trump - more authoritarian - then the fascists are right and we need right-wing totalitarianism in self-defense.
