Looking at the order distribution in my Etsy shop, it looks like half of my orders are for the new stuff coming out and the other half is for existing stuff. That has me hopeful that 100 dollars a week in orders might not be out of the question. And because print jobs run from a few hours...

but it seems like a lot of people are involved in the hustle economy, so why should I be any different? Thankfully, I actually kind of like doing Uber Eats. It can be frustrating sometimes, but I delivered pizza as a kid and enjoyed just driving around listening to baseball games on AM radio...

(yes, I'm that old) but today it's a lot of podcasts. My goal overall, besides being able to provide for my family, is to just get to a point where I'm not constantly operating in crisis mode, moving money around like Enron and hoping things will just be okay.

to a maximum of about four, I can run Uber Eats in between starting print jobs. That means I can take a job that paid less than my previous employer. Spending a couple of evenings and a portion of a day during the weekend delivering food isn't my ideal solution...

I find myself grieving a little today over the possibility that my career as a software engineer might be coming to an end. After I decided I didn't want to teach, I started grad school the month Saria was born. Two and a half years, and a lot of work, including having food poising and puking...

So I grieve over a chapter of my life that may very well be over, but it's grief tempered with pride in the work I did and appreciation for the friendships I made and for all the people who helped me get here, especially BA who proofread and edited every single paper I wrote in grad school.

But once I land a job that pays us enough to live on, my job search is over. If that's a software engineering job, so be it. If it's a coordinator in a warehouse, sure.

I'm still considering looking for an adjunct teaching position at Rio, Estrella or South Mountain. I would love the opportunity to teach Java, Data Structures and Algorithms, or any CS type class.

the sole breadwinner after Andrew was born so BA could be a stay at home mom with him. I'll forever be grateful for having that opportunity and for the friends I made along the way.

I'm proud of the work I did. When I was at Nationwide I was the sole developer on a set of applications that generated billion dollar insurance policies and made the company bank.

and both ghosted me. I have friends and ex-colleagues who are in the same boat. We've all concluded that because no one is seeing the ROI for all this cash companies are shelling out for AI that they're only hiring younger, less experienced, and most importantly...

cheaper that seasoned, senior engineers. So I eventually opened myself up to non-engineering roles and I've had several interviews, including a really good one at the place BA works. Between 2013 and 2025 I earned, collectively, a little more than a million dollars and I was able to be...

and as of right now that is the last day I wrote a line of code. I was notified of my layoff on my last day of leave. I was supposed to start back at work on 6/1 but received my layoff notice on 5/28.

I've applied to over 300 jobs since then, a majority were software engineering jobs. I had a total of one interview with a company, two headhunters said they had a position and I signed up to be repped by them...

I eventually moved on from Nationwide and bounced around a few other insurances companies, including going back to Nationwide as a contractor for a bit and eventually ended up at Optum...

I loved the first few years there, my boss at the time John Ryan is a great guy and even though we both got laid off, we keep in touch. I went on short term disability to get open heart surgery on March 6, 2026...

between my turns to present during my capstone project, I finished grad school the same week Mackenzie was born. I was fortunate enough to have landed a software development job half way through earning my degree. I was welcomed and mentored by some great people, Jim Witas, Mariana Hubbard and...

Edwin Delph. Because I felt like I had to prove myself, I ended up consistently working 60 hours weeks. I did that on and off for several years until I burned myself out. My psychiatrist at the time recommended taking a month of FMLA to recharge my batteries.

The landlord is painting the house and our livestock guardian dog is going nuts. I resorted to trying to sedate her a little bit with a Trazodone. If that doesn't work, noise canceling headphones are next.

EA shuttered BioWare, because of course they did. I hope the principal talent forms their own studio because no one did RPGs better than them. Also, if I didn’t already mention it, fuck companies who only care about stock prices and fuck VCs who bleed a company dry and discard whatever is left.

Can’t drink much anymore because of the bypass surgery, but had to try the Spiked Arnold Palmers. It’s only 5% so one or two now and then aren’t going to kill me and 5% isn’t going to be a big deal with my pain meds either.

Holy shit! Paramount+ finally fixed the issue of not being able to switch between seasons of a given show. It’s been broken for years. I can almost guarantee there was an invisible <div> that was blocking the seasons dropdown. Don’t know why it took so long to fix.

Also, I think I might have a thing for half Klingon women. K'Ehleyr and B'Elanna are both smoke shows. On top of being gorgeous, they’re both super competent and natural leaders. Star Trek writing can be tough sometimes, but they did not drop the ball with these strong female characters.

Rewatching Voyager for the first time since it’s original run. One thing I didn’t appreciate the first time was how hands on Janeway was. When something needed fixing she gets right in there. She doesn’t just sit on the bridge or her ready room. That’s the sign of a good leader.

I went to grab a package on the porch and my idiot fucking dog took off at full speed out the door. I tripped, spilling my drink and ruining my food. I found her about 10 minutes later a few streets north of us.

The X-Files reboot has received a full series order from Hulu! Ordinarily I’d be a little remiss about a reboot of one of my top 5 favorite shows (me and a couple of friends would do a three way call to talk about the current weeks episode every Sunday night) but Ryan Coogler is directing…

I’ve got some kind of respiratory infection. I slept from 5pm Monday till 1pm Tuesday. 20 fucking hours. Then slept from 4:30 Tuesday till 6am today. 13 and a half hours. I don’t think I’ve ever slept that much over a three day period.

My hips and my lower back are killing me this morning and I’m losing my voice. Will take it easy today. Need to do my Uber Eats delivery still. Need to earn another 90$ before Sunday. This weeks Uber Eats are going to pay for Andrew’s iPad repair. Next weeks will pay for Mack’s birthday shopping.

Suicidal ideation is hitting hard this morning. For the record, I don’t want to hurt myself, these are unwanted thoughts. I have the means, motive, and opportunity to do it, but I’m fighting that hard. I’m just worried about the inevitable crash when I come down from this hypo-manic state. It’s ugly

I was up 24+ on Wednesday/Thursday. Slept pretty decent last night, but I'm coming up on 22 hours and I'm not tired at all. I think it's safe to say I'm having a hypo-manic episode. I haven't had a major depressive or manic episode in years. I think this was triggered by stress over our finances.

Thankfully I'm self aware enough (thank you therapy) to know what's happening while I'm in it. I've already apologized to BA and the kids ahead of time because I know I'm going to act like an asshole at some point soon, I'm not going to be able to help it.
