Wildwood was a rare movie that I put on my calendar so I'd be reminded when it came out. Except, by then I had higher priorities. So far it looks like a lot of other people did, too. With any other studio, I'd be worried for the artists. Laika's artists might be safe, though.

Laika is weird because it's basically the toy of a billionaire nepo-baby. Too many of their films have flopped, but Travis Knight seems to shrug it off. "Oh well, let's make another one!" Daddy needs a tax write-off.

Looking at what's happening in Brazil - voter suppression, power outages, transportation disruptions, election laws broken or ignored... It's a coup, but it'll be deemed perfect legal if the guy it's for "wins". And I'm sitting here thinking "you could just shoot him." Oh but that would be illegal.

Look at Finland - a huge forest illegally cleared to build a data center. The expectation is the company will pay a meaningless fine. Even if the country orders the CEO to explain themselves to a judge, that'll be a minor inconvenience. But imagine if someone shoots the CEO on their way there.

"Wealthiest man in the world needs us to be poorer so he can be even wealthier, because he doesn't own enough senators or judges to always get his way. Here's an AI-generated picture of him with a puppy." Shoot him. The world will cheer. Then go to a shelter and adopt a real pupper.

To me it's like going back in time to kill Hitler. Writers like to explore how much worse things would turn out, but realistically, how much worse could it be? We have powerful people right now that are actively making the world worse, their sudden departure would be a net win for the world.

I really should have started this comic back in August. All 7 pages could have been finished in time for Halloween, without me feeling rushed. Circumstances didn't allow it, though. Now my plan is to finish page 1, and then page 2 (and maybe 3) may be left as sketches. Then the rest by April 1.

The weather lately has not been helping. I ride my bike for an hour+ in the morning, but lately the wind has made it increasingly difficult each day. Today was much worse than yesterday, leaving me physically exhausted even though I'd cut my ride short.

Page 1 inks are in progress, page 2 is fully drawn... I just might be able to pull this off! Just have to not think about the two more pages needed to complete the story, the three other pages with gags I don't want to toss out, or the many oh-so tempting distractions...

Watching a Youtuber that I like do their thing in public, surrounded by people... It may never not be weird, to me. I just think about any time I've recorded walking-around videos for myself, people would mug for the camera as they passed by, as if they expect to become famous.

Years back my neighbor offered me some of his homemade rum. It didn't even occur to me that it was illegal, because he worked for the government. It was damn good stuff! And powerful! He offered me two shots, and laughed that if I'd had a 3rd, I'd need to be carried home.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Supreme Court agrees to review Reconstruction-era ban on distilling spirits in private homes.

It also wasn't like he was keeping his rum a secret - it was right on display in his foyer! 3-4 ornate glass containers - each a different flavor - arranged like works of art, which they were.

Thinking about adding a couple of commission tiers to my Patreon. One for single characters, another for two. One slot each, or maybe two for the single. Only reason I haven't already, is normally with commissions payment comes after an agreement is reached, not before.

For the past month I've been thinking "I'll take on a few when I'm ready, after this comic is done" ...well nothing makes you ready quite like a good kick in the pants. You get that notification that there's work to be done, you get that shit done and THEN you can go back to being indecisive.

Just opening my commission list is too easy to put off, and it can be distracting just waiting for inquiries. The new patron notification would hit different - an instant jolt of "no time to fuck around!"

I could post my rules in the tier description, including a right of refusal if I feel a line is crossed or they ask for something I didn't think to put on the list. I would hope that anyone signing up is already familiar enough with my work that they'd know what to expect.

Using my 3D models to lay out some comic panels, I briefly entertained the idea of doing some comics entirely in 3D... until I think about what that would entail. Daisy's model & rig need some updates. Mary & Rose need new models. The diner needs textures & shaders.

My problem with 3rd party scripts is I've HATED every rig I've used that was made with them. Too many of them felt like they were made with no input at all from animators. --- hair strips are another thing I'd need to look into. Need more locations than just the diner. More character models.

I'd want to read up on how to do toon shading that actually looks almost hand-drawn, instead of like ass. For the rigs, I'd probably be better off using mGear, rather than having re-familiarize myself with my own scripts. If I'm rigging and writing/testing tools simultaneously, nothing gets done.

I see posts like this every so often, and this time did some math. 238/58745 = 0.00405 0.00405 * 12 months = 0.486 So the loan has a 5% interest rate, which isn't bad. Their monthly payment is just too low to make a dent in it. Paying $1000 per month would have more impact, but is more difficult.

I left out a zero when typing this. 0.00405 * 12 months = 0.0486, not 0.486. It's still a 5% APR, though. 0.486 would've been closer to 50%, which, if you accept a 50% APR, then math is REALLY not your thing...

When you're applying for such a loan, you can do the math in reverse to estimate what the monthly interest payments will be. The trick then is doing whatever you can to outpace those payments, because the longer it takes you to pay back the loan, the more you'll end up paying.

My best friend was stuck in this same sort of trap, with his credit cards. I made him a spreadsheet that showed him how much interest was being charged each month. His payments were too low. He busted his ass to pay more, and eventually got out of debt. He still uses my spreadsheet to stay out.

I'm picturing Helluva Boss's "Dirty Bird" being a career highlight for many of its animators. Just, the sort of sequence they've been waiting to cut loose & sink their teeth into. A few others may have been traumatized and are in need of counseling just from watching the reference materials.

When the animated Disney musical for Eternal Beach City gets produced (it’s just a matter of time) I feel pretty confident that this song will serve as the opening number. Gimme a call, Bob Iger. We’ll do lunch. Or wait… I guess now the CEO of Disney is some guy named… *Josh?!*

...I just saw a model painting video, where the mouth was moving as the face was being painted. Moving to the AI-dubbed narration. Fucking NOTHING is safe from this shit.

Something I've been thinking about since Forgotten Island was deemed a failure - I'm really tired of being guilted into seeing films, ESPECIALLY when they're from major studios that can afford to properly market to that 18-35 demo that I am well outside of. Why didn't THEY go see the movie??

I saw The Amazing Digital Circus finale because it being theaters was a huge milestone for indie animation. Coyote vs Acme only got to theaters because fans demanded it, so how could I not go see it? Plus it may give second chances to other films that were also finished & shelved.

Wildwood looks amazing, and Laika is the only studio doing stop motion. A hand-crafted film is a huge deal, especially when the big studios are lusting over the imagined cost-cutting of AI. I'll just have to overlook that Laika might be a tax-dodge for a billionaire family...

Disney actually issued threats to get people to go see their films - "This better be a hit, otherwise don't complain to us when we no longer make originals." "If you don't go see this sequel you didn't ask for, we'll shut down Pixar!" And then they lay off hundreds of people regardless.

The executives at the big studios don't see an original film's success as a sign that they need to make more original films, they see it as the birth of a new franchise to exploit. If you want to really send a message to them, stop supporting franchises. They're going to fire artists in any case.

Forgotten Island's release was poorly timed, for me. The day it came out, I was preparing to head home from Michigan. Bags packed, car put in storage. I couldn't go see the film even if I'd known it was out. I'm also sick of films needing to make back ALL their money in one weekend...

Reference doesn't need to be complicated. Sometimes it's as simple as snapping pics of your hands with your phone or tablet. Using a mirror is even simpler! If poseable 3D models are an option, don't be afraid to use them! Also photos, action figures, puppets... anything that helps!

Use reference. I’m serious. I get it that somehow you or someone convinced you that using reference is “cheating.” It’s not. You are just hindering yourself.

For the past 1-2 years, I think I've averaged 1 full drawing drawing a month, not counting thumbnail sketches. Usually characters. This page was all done last week, so that's a step up. Now I just have to do it again this week. And again the following week, while inking & coloring the first two.

When I visited Disneyland a couple years back, one snack I got was basically a frosted guava-filled pop tart. Ever since, I grab anything I see locally that has guava in it. All of it has been disappointing, and these cookies are no different. They're tastey, just not as good as those tarts.
