V little evidence to suggest that the fall in private school pupils is due to VAT & that pupils are moving to state schls. It could equally be the falling number of school-age children, as in the state sector. The piece is vague on how old the children leaving priv schls are, which would be helpful!

I've been reading lots of the local press from the opening of UoL recently and it's remarkably optimistic (only the odd comment about neglecting the rest of the county). Pleasantly surprised to see a positive story about it now, it really has brought a lot of opportunity, jobs, and life to Lincs.

Definitely a rising sentiment of neglect of places like Boston and big swathes of the coast, as you can see in some of the comments on the article. And they're not completely wrong. Want to see the case made for HEIs providing growth while also building relationships with their wider communities...

And a lot of those relationships have already begun anyway, eg UoL and the Institute for Rural and Coastal Health giving research attention and infrastructural investment to Mablethorpe, where there is no longer a secondary school. But a lot of the positive work done isn't as visible as it should be

Started today commentating on Danny Ings’ last-minute equaliser in his debut for Wycombe, ended it at Wembley watching England and the World Champions. Some day of football.

As the govt pushes forward with plans for technical education routes for even younger pupils, the 'record high' numbers of students taking T levels at post-16 is still just... 1.4% of overall entries? Not exactly conclusive proof of massive employer and learner demand, is it

Britain has skills shortages across the board. Yet the decision about what to preserve as part of post-18 tuition is being left to isolated groups of university managers whose legal duty is to preserve solvency. That's completely mad. www.hepi.ac.uk/2026/08/12/w...

Good to be back at AP. We win that on another day: second-half too flat but some really good passages of play in the first. Love the way Ewan Henderson is starting the season.

I've written about Neets for the LRB. It is odd listening to recent debates about this completely ignore the overwhelming fact of this current crisis, that it is one of inactivity, disability, mental ill-health and neurodevelopmental disorders (as I discuss) www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Obviously a tough watch but that won’t define our tournament. We had plenty of chances to win it, especially in that last 15: Kane puts that away 9 times out of 10, O’Reilly unlucky, Guehi too. Biggest worry was how much we got away with that Konsa challenge.

Don’t think we’ve demonstrated an ability to effectively break down a low block under Tuchel (nor in years), and that has to be addressed at some point, but got to give credit to Ghana for how difficult it is to sustain that relative solidity for 90+ minutes.

I'll be chairing a panel at this, which will include discussions of the 'new' 1960s institutions; the purpose of learning in universities; examples of further and technical education in the mid-twentieth century; and more. It's at 2pm on Thursday 18th - come along if you're around!

Our interview with @petermandler.bsky.social is now available as a podcast. He discusses the history of selection, meritocracy and the 11-plus, and what this can tell us about current debates on selective education. open.spotify.com/episode/4ITJ...

Enjoyed doing this. This history equips us with the tools to talk about our current education system, even in non-selective areas, about the relationship between schools and social mobility, exam stress, etc.

Surely Reform's 'net stupid zero' line won't be effective for very long when, in what is meant to be its heartlands, the tangible and obvious impacts of climate change are increasingly becoming part of their constituents' lives.

It feels a very big oversight for them to apply their climate change denialism to a place with the highest levels of flood risk in the country, and a long history of residents having to deal with it as a very real issue, not an abstract concept.

Also not a fan of a lot of the comments and quotes. Vilifying Reform voters isn't helpful, point instead to the failures of mainstream politics, the media, etc. in why residents in eg Boston and Skeg felt that the Reform path was the best suited one
