The number of people in tech I know who are around my age and at-present unemployed and asking “Am I… retired? M-maybe?” is more than half of one hand. Just the ones I know of, anyway.

Yesterday’s entertainment was FLOW (2024) which I liked a lot. I knew going in that the films’ existence is a point of pride for the FOSS community but I didn’t know until reading about it afterwards that Latvia is as proud of the movie as any place could be about any movie. Riga erected a […]

I laughed out loud at this footnote, and dared not peek at the page history to see how much edit-warring has occurred about the cat’s color. I also like that the page’s “plot summary” was almost a shot-for-shot description of the entire film but this sentence all […] [Original post on masto.nyc]

Spent two weekend afternoons adding a tip jar to BumpySkies. It takes me a long time coz I am meticulous about hand-weaving this sort of thing into my UI instead of just jamming in a pre-fabbed iframe from Ko-fi or whatever. Plus this way I can put my own little jokey-jokes in.

I’ve been coming around to the notion that BumpySkies is probably the most important thing I’ve built-or-co-built since IFTF. It’s funny coz both projects launched in 2016, but I treated BumpySkies as a one-and-done for the next nine years. I picked it up again one year ago this month after I […]

There’s only two times I have had Claude cuss at me out of nowhere, and one happened a year ago when I asked it to analyze BumpySkies’s usage numbers after setting some context about the site, and it sputter-generated “Holy shit.” This was useful information to me because I’d clearly described […]

And, yes, the thank-you note text changes appropriately if you tip more than $5 or $10. Next I gotta merge in some new Nelly art that I commissioned from Flynn last month. This goes on the various “we don’t have a forecast for this flight yet” pages. I didn’t […] [Original post on masto.nyc]

Now giggling because I remember how the iRL catechism (protestant ranch-flavored) that I heard countless times as a kid ended with “on these hang all of the law and the prophets”. Nobody explains what that meant. I thought of a bush from which dangled a bunch of beardy desert guys in robes, and […]

One of my local friends became an episcopal priest a year or two ago and invited me to all their ordination rites, and I dropped in on another regular service or two that they led. Despite the decades and the miles, they they were: the basement donuts, after. Bricks and mortar of community, and […]

I know approximately zero men who have ever grown out their frontal-neck hair with intent, and many of these men are financially well off, and to the best of my knowledge zero of them have expressed the idea of just politely one-and-doneing it with lasers, pew pew. This includes myself. I am […]

I look so much nicer when I spend a few minutes properly shaving my neck versus a few seconds pawing at it with an electric shaver that it makes me a little angry. Handsomely angry tho

BumpySkies.com has been flyin’ free of PHP since its launch ten years ago (and I did just do a thing to make double-sure about that) so that’s nice for me today. Also nice: enough people have been buying or re-upping their premium BumpySkies subscriptions that I’ve shut off my Stripe […]

I got my fluey and covie shots today. Go get yours if you still need to, now’s the time. The nurse had a thermos sticker of an idiot cat saying “I FORGOR 🥴” that I stared at while getting 2X-poked. At the BGR airport bar last month, the local-news TV played a puff piece about hey it’s time for […]

I have seen folks saying that this year’s shots really put them on their ass, and count me among them. This is the sickest I’ve felt from a vaccine shot—well, a two-shot cocktail—since my last shingles shot. Full-body sweaty aches and general enervation. It’s for a good cause! I ain’t […]

(To be super duper clear, I am making “shoo” gestures and insisting that you still get your shots if you haven’t yet, just also relating my lived experience from it this time ‘round.)

Now I am in #CambridgeMA! I watched the regatta from the bridge for a bit specifically because it’s something I never bothered to do when I actually lived around #Boston. There is a bogus Lord Binface here confusing the children

Am doing one of my favorite things when visiting a place while by myself and hungry, which is to go into an unfamiliar eatery that looks dingy and has nobody in it, and get my meal there. Thus did I walk past the known Flour with 999 people in it, and entered the Falafel Corner which contained […]

I am visiting #SomervilleMA for two days and I got up early enough to score a seat at the Diesel and enjoy a large coffee and a maple oat scone. The very first time I did this, I was literally one-half my current age! The very last time I did this as a resident […] [Original post on masto.nyc]

Ran into this at Astor Place. They were selling lucky knot kits in a diy vending machine. The artist was raising money for something, but I figure what it was 💀. My lucky knot was blue! It was IMMEDIATELY added to the fantasy football shrine. God, I love these […] [Original post on masto.nyc]

I’m on my way to join a protest against Miller’s goons gunning down my neighbors in the street, and then I’m going to drop off a busted PlayStation controller for repair at the local indie game shop if I’m gonna be below Midtown anyway, because New York has every kind of energy and I let it all […]

Hands Off NYC is holding an emergency protest today at 5:30 in Foley Square, after ICE shot a neighbor in front of his kid yesterday. #NYC https://www.thecityreporter.nyc/2026/10/08/federal-officers-shoot-man-in-the-bronx-nypd-says/

I guess continuing to avoid photographing faces anyway is kinda like wearing an N-95 mask today, but for your camera, and I mean that kindly.

Anyway! This was also my first time walking down the anarchic bazaar of Canal Street, unplanned, and it was delightful. A person walking ahead of me suddenly shrieked with surprise, stopping to snap up a faux-gucci purse from a blanket. “You like that one? I give you a good deal!” said the […]

This protest was, unsurprisingly, much more emotionally intense and full of negative energy than any of the protests I’ve marched in since last year. I don’t mean “negative” as in “bad”, you understand. It was appropriate to the context. But it was absolutely an angry march, not a proud one. The […]

I find myself still following the advice I learned at the top of last year about avoiding photographing any marcher’s face, coz it feels right, but buddy… I dunno how the protests work where you’re from but out here the marcher’s own organizers will absolutely stand up next to each speaker or […]
