My fun presidential TFR story: I was flying from NY toward DC and there was a POTUS TFR _that I knew about_ enroute back to DC. I was flying VFR talking to NYC App (very nice controllers letting a 185 just mosey on through). It was summer, it was the afternoon, and the clouds started building up.

Moral of the story: ATC is your friend. Don’t be dicks to them and they may just save your ass.

It started to become difficult to stay in VMC. ATC was being super helpful, but they can’t see the clouds, so I had to keep diverting and requesting ascents/descents. At one point a controller goes: “8DK, just a reminder about the TFR enroute”, “Roger, 8DK” I keep dodging clouds…

A few minutes later ATC goes “8DK, I assume you’re about to begin a right turn”. With all the cloud dodging my eyes we’re outside and I lost track of my relative position to the TFR… I immediately begin a turn and key up: “Absolutely. 8DK” That guy saved my ass that day. 😓

I made a mess of the pattern and pissed off some folks (and apologized on the ground, of course). Pattern entries are not the same in Canada, I knew that, but didn’t know the extent of the differences! But at least my landing was good. It’s like landing a shopping cart.

Can someone with Foreflight see if they’re able to get surface analysis on the map layer? I know I can use the imagery tab for the old-school surface analysis, but I am curious as to why I’m only getting “no data” when I try to add the surface analysis layer.

I’ve had too much of too much and want to switch to a just right amount of too much in my life. The problem is that we are all trying to avoid too little of just right and we overcompensate.
