We've also been discussing: 🏝️ The globally important biodiversity of the UK Overseas Territories 🤝 Community-led conservation and local knowledge 🍄 The vital role of fungi in healthy ecosystems 🐋 What animal culture can teach us about conservation

A recurring message throughout #COP17 has been the need to move from ambition to implementation, embedding biodiversity across governance, policy and decision-making. #Biodiversity #GlobalBiodiversityFramework #NatureRecovery

Key themes from the first week: 🔬 Science & evidence informing policy and action 🌿 Indigenous leadership in conservation 👥 Youth engagement in biodiversity decision-making 💷 Closing the biodiversity finance gap

The UK Wild Bird Indicators have been published, with the UK Seabird Indicator utilising data from the Seabird Monitoring Programme. Read more about the continued declines in the post below. #Seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social

5/ There’s long-term decline for Arctic Skua, Herring Gull & Shag, influencing the Breeding Seabird Indicator which has declined by 52% in the UK since 1986. BTO has recently improved the seabird analysis methodology, making @smp-seabirds.bsky.social trends more robust.

They use "distance sampling", a proven scientific method that accounts for animals that go undetected, giving us more robust estimates of species abundance They also share their knowledge with passengers, inspiring a new audience to care about marine conservation

A sighting tells us an animal was there. Systematic survey data tells us how many may be using an area, inc hard-to-reach offshore waters. Every voyage adds another piece to the picture Read more: bit.ly/46Y1iDD 📷 Humpback Whale © Nikki Taylor; Surveyor © @orcaweb.bsky.social
