Thought it'd be neat for flavor to give policies some images. Not an artist myself and thus having to rely on using existing artwork, I really underestimated how little 174x78px is to get a scene across without custom-made stylized pixel art. Oh, and I want color-theming, too... Labor policies:

Environmental storytelling, UI edition: Normally, my guide for these civ-specific policy names is to only do them if there's a distinct local expression of the concept, not just translations. Had to do an exception for one civ though because the idea was just too funny...

Having lots of fun adding policy flavor names and the research required is very satisfying. Civs have custom looks for units and buildings but doing something like that with text remains a missed opportunity so far. A little goodie for the classical antiquity fans:

And of course a typo ruined the punchline, lol. "Leadership" is meant to called "Arete" for Greece. It's a policy that scales with the number of great people earned. So you pursue Arete through a multitude of virtues and by bringing out your strengths through the other policies in the category.

Also, another mistake bugged the new Greek ability. Here's how it should look: All governments unlocked from turn 1. Be fascist in 1000 B.C.? With the power of Plato, you can! It's up to the player to figure out when the extra Envoys are worth the relationship hit and possibly blocked policy slots.

Mad respect to the Grimhammer modders who are not just taking a stance against AI-made mods but apparently also have full-time help desk jobs - these numbers are beyond imagination to me, lol

For comparison: Civ VI's YnAMP has twice the subscribers and has been out for about twice as long, yet only has about 20% as many comments. We hate plenty on impatient spammers and other bad-faith users but overall we're fairly blessed with being left unbothered, apparently.

optimist: the glass is half full pessimist: the glass is half empty Civ VI modder: the glass is sufficiently large to hold the official water but they still should have made it bigger so it is able to hold all the water I want to pour in on top Happy "asset limit is fixed" season, people! :)

optimist: the glass is half full pessimist: the glass is half empty systems designer: when the glass gets into this 50% state there's no delta between drinking strategies so players are feedbacking choice paralysis. we can fix this by adjusting the gulp size function, let me try a few things...

Encouraging a Civ player to interact with various mechanics to emulate a real-world phenomenon organically is quite difficult. The temptation to just make a stacking yield bonus is real. But holy shit does it feel good when you push through and find a great idea for a systems-driven bonus.

Protectionism as an economic policy came from the theory of Mercantilism, which emphasizes export of manufactured goods and the import of hard currency in return. This could've just been "+1 Gold on all improved resources." That's the kind of bonus you usually see in modern civ games.

That's what I wanted to avoid. So here, players get something they have to interact with and sell through diplomatic trade, immersing them in actually running an export-oriented economy. And it's all just a simple sentence rather than a whole essay of conditions (also no "this is doubled", lol).

ah fuck I’ve just realized I’ve not got myself a piece of specific art from Civ, which is something I try to do for all the games I’ve worked on. recs for artists who can do similar to Civ 6 portrait style specifically? I know exactly what I want for this haha

Are you interested in Civ VII, in game design, and seeing unreasonably long wall of text posts *not* generated by AI? Then I might have something for you, my thoughts on how Civ VII could improve beyond "RETVRN TO V / VII" but by actually embracing its innovations: old.reddit.com/r/civ/commen...

Unironically the first thing to learn for modding civ - everything is a .txt in disguise.

Modder brain is when you think about a game multiple times a day but actually *play* it just a month. But when I do, it's suddenly 7am again and I need to get ready for work without any sleep... Got what's maybe the most lovely scenery in started with in this game so far though:

Another Great People mod, this time bringing a high-cultured officer corps to Prussia. Thanks to everyone who helped me with research! (especially since Prussia's elite was zelaously mysoginist and tried to deliberately erase women from its history) old.reddit.com/r/civ/commen...

old.reddit.comLet Prussia's glory and shadow leave its mark on the world with 10 Junkers (unique great people)!I did not like the Stuka as a unique unit for Prussia because it appeared well within the time of a unified Germany. Junkers fit the civ's...

Not all people included were exactly champions of equality and justice... but I do feel better with the Stuka, a machine fundamentally designed to inflict terror on who the Nazis saw as subhuman and as a propaganda tool for hypermasculinist heroism, now being inseparable from fascism ingame as well.

Loved making this mod, and I am already deeply invested in adding some interesting events for each Tycoon for a 2.0 update. The structure of civ uniques in Civ VII just allows infusing them with so much flavor, one of my favorite parts of the game. old.reddit.com/r/civ/commen...

old.reddit.comImmerse yourself in the Gilded Age with 10 Tycoons (unique great people) for America!Among the non-unique great people in previous games, Americans were strongly represented so it felt obvious to me that America should get unique...

Quick update from our team, Civ fans - we’ve got a significant #Civ7 update on the way, currently scheduled for June 17 (subject to change). Read our full check-in breaking down what’s in the update, some items still in progress, and how your feedback is helping guide what's next. 2kgam.es/43P01gc

I have about 14 spreadsheets where I kept reinventing what became my 6T tech tree. The process itself helped me get through some rough days, lol. At least once a month I feel like writing down all world wonders and group them. It's so therapeutic I should start billing my health insurance for it.

no that’s my emotional support spreadsheet

Ok long ages setting makes it quite fun but is probably not that balanced. But who'd have thought that I'd end up warmongering in Civ... Really fun system this time around. I even enjoyed Exploration as a whole due to being able to focus more on my own continent as Songhai.

Turns out that when the game asks "which city?" and you say "the player", it gets mad. Issue is fixed, just need to test if all effects work as intended. Then hopefully have this coming soon. Bonus points for anyone who knows all three references made in the thumbnail.

Hello darkness my old friend

Filling out my building sheets with pics from my Mughal game, I didn't even see the Schoolhouse at first - it's one of the few modern buildings where the whole model is adjusted for a style instead of just recoloring the same model.

Was fun to try resetting your mind over and over and thinking of a completely different domain. 🟩 🟩🟩 🟧🟨🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟨 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Percentile: 99.83 datcreativity.com

First two Civ VII mods in testing! One just fixes a bunch of errors among the Warehouse buildings. The other goes further and makes Warehouse buildings non-ageless. Instead, their bonuses are granted automatically by the City Hall in later ages and they can be overbuilt safely.

You are up to date.
