Be Kind. Do More Good. We Got This.
π Captain Raffi Musiker has a starship, and I have QUESTIONS. π
My latest JJwJ essay dives into Star Trek: Zero Point #1 without spoiling the fun.
Come jibber-jabber! βοΈ

Today's kindness idea π§‘
Invite the person standing slightly outside the circle into the conversation.
Make room at the table.
Explain the inside joke.
Introduce people.
Belonging can begin with something as simple as somebody noticing there was space for one more.
Gen X Halloween costumes were occasionally less "screen accurate" and more "plastic mask with breathing difficulties."
Visibility was optional.
Comfort was nonexistent.
Commitment to getting candy remained absolute.
We survived primarily through determination and pillowcases. ππ
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
Monday has four business days to complete its work before Halloween.
I suggest it use this time wisely.
My attention is already shifting toward candy, costumes and whether I can reasonably classify watching spooky movies as seasonal research.
The answer is yes. ππ
I love that humans decorate for seasons.
At some point we collectively decided leaves, pumpkins, lights and tiny decorative ghosts could change the emotional atmosphere of a room.
And you know what?
They absolutely can.
Humans are wonderfully strange little nest decorators. ππ
With the future of #StarTrek hanging in the balance, weβre feeling the anxiety!
So whatβs there to do but create a pair of fictional studio execs, gather some of our most creative #Trekkies, and do a mock pitch session?

Today's plan can include something completely unnecessary that makes you happy.
Wear the ridiculous socks.
Use the good mug.
Watch the comfort episode.
Buy the tiny pumpkin.
Life contains enough necessary things.
Keep some room for delight.
We Got This Lovelies. π§‘
There was always one house on Halloween giving out the GOOD candy.
Children knew.
Word traveled.
Entire trick-or-treating routes were adjusted accordingly.
No apps. No group chat. Just neighborhood intelligence operating at astonishing efficiency. ππ
this is part of a great thread that is rarer than unicorns to see cis people say, much less even understand
but let me tell you
itβs not great out here!
say and do more, please
I try to imagine itβhearing a vicious, down-is-up simulacrum of my lived experience wielded as a tool & a weapon, every single day, on the heels of all the other ways, implicit & explicit, I'm dehumanized by my society, culture, & politicsβ& I can't. I only know how it looks from here, & it's vile.
October weekends have a very specific confidence.
Maybe we'll go somewhere.
Maybe we'll do something seasonal.
Maybe we'll stay home with coffee and watch something we've already seen twelve times.
All three somehow feel like excellent planning. βοΈπ
Star Trek has ghosts, possessed crew members, mysterious voices, haunted-looking planets and beings pretending to be other beings.
Basically, Starfleet has been celebrating Halloween for decades.
They just keep calling everything an anomaly. ππ
Spooky season Star Trek question ππ
You have to spend Halloween with ONE Trek character.
Who are you choosing?
Costumes, candy and questionable decisions are encouraged.
I mainly want to know which character would become alarmingly committed to winning the costume contest.
Sometimes the nicest part of a friendship is reaching the stage where nobody has to entertain anybody.
Come over.
Sit down.
Drink something.
Tell me the weird thing that happened today.
Comfortable company is one of life's better inventions. π§‘
Something that once required a pep talk now barely gets an eyebrow raise. Excuse me, when did THAT happen? π
This weekβs Check-In Thursday is for anyone whose nerves once needed a pregame ceremony. Come check in. βοΈπ§‘
#CheckInThursday#PersonalGrowth
Youβve joined Starfleet. π
Youβve got the uniform, the assignment, and a handbook full of regulations.
How long before curiosity gets you called into your commanding officerβs office? π
Which Starfleet rule are you accidentally breaking first?
#StarTrek#Starfleet
Thursday check-in π§‘
What are we working with today?
βοΈ Caffeinated and capable
π Cozy but functional
π Mentally preparing for Halloween
π Running diagnostics
π« Absolutely no additional tasks, please
Select your current operating condition.
Make the weird thing.
Write the story nobody asked for.
Take the photograph.
Try the recipe.
Paint something questionable.
Creativity gets much more interesting when we stop requiring every idea to justify its existence before we're allowed to enjoy making it. π¨
Today's Do More Good challenge is wonderfully simple.
Share the useful thing.
The community event. The food pantry hours. The free class. The scholarship. The local resource.
Information doesn't help much sitting quietly in the right person's bookmarks. π§‘
There are people who make a place feel different simply by arriving.
Not because they're the loudest person in the room.
Because they bring warmth, curiosity, humor or kindness with them.
That's a pretty wonderful kind of presence to have. π§‘
Welcome to #TransTuesday!
You may not know this, but trans people are human beings (it's true). And that means art made by humans, even cis ones, can speak to the transness in so many ways
Let's talk about how and why, and dive into the 1s-3s on my 10-point scale of TRANS ALLEGORIES IN POP MUSIC!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. π§‘
Some promises stay with us for years, even when life turns out differently than expected.
My new personal essay, Promises Kept, is about life after cancer.

Today's kindness idea π§‘
Tell someone what they add to a room.
Maybe they make people laugh.
Maybe they listen.
Maybe they notice who's being left out.
Maybe they make everyone feel calmer.
Compliments about who someone is can land differently than compliments about how they look.
Gen X remembers when missing a television episode meant you simply missed it.
No streaming.
No replay button.
Maybe somebody recorded it on VHS.
Maybe they didn't.
You learned disappointment, resilience and the importance of checking the TV Guide. π
Monday's first mistake was arriving before I finished being Sunday.
Its second mistake was bringing expectations.
Fortunately, I have coffee and decades of experience looking busy while mentally negotiating terms. βοΈπ
New #TrekPolitics! Our review and comment on the third Star Trek move, The Search for Spock, concludes! How exactly did Saavik "help" Spock with his pon-farr? Also, is a cloaking device consistent with the Klingon warrior culture? Stick around for #Bobservations.

One of adulthood's underrated pleasures is realizing you can create tiny traditions whenever you want.
Sunday coffee.
Movie night.
The ridiculous mug.
A walk after dinner.
Nobody has to officially declare something a tradition.
You just keep doing the thing you love. π§‘
A reminder for Sunday π§‘
Fun does not need to become content.
A hobby does not need to become income.
Rest does not need to make you more productive tomorrow.
Some things are allowed to exist because you enjoy them.
We Got This Lovelies.
Starfleet officers hear "unknown life-form" and walk toward it.
I hear an unidentified noise in the house at night and immediately decide whatever lives there owns the house now.
This may be why Starfleet has not contacted me about an away-team position. ππ
Enough is enough.
We HAVE TO VOTE.
ALL OF US...in numbers too big to rig.
The best way to do this is by getting your vote in EARLY!
No Kings is coming together again TOMORROW, Sat Oct 17, this time to make sure every eligible voter is ready to make their voice heard.
@nkcoalition.bsky.social
Today's Star Trek question requires serious consideration. π
You can have ONE piece of Trek technology in your home.
No starship. No loopholes.
What are you choosing?
I'm already suspicious some of you are about to choose a holodeck and immediately create a safety incident.
Food carries an astonishing amount of humanity.
Family recipes. Holiday traditions. Comfort meals. Things we learned to cook badly before learning to cook them well.
Sometimes a plate isn't just dinner.
It's memory you can taste. π§‘
π In the spirit of World Food Day, we want to make sure everyone had food on their plate! Trek Talks 6 β the Star Trek-inspired telethon for the Hollywood Food Coalition β streams live March 20, 2027 at 9:45 AM PT. trektalks.net#TrekTalks
Today is World Food Day. π§‘
A good day to support the people and organizations helping neighbors get enough to eat.
Donate food. Give funds. Share a local resource. Volunteer.
Food is basic.
Making sure people have access to it is something all of us can help with.
#WorldFoodDay
Cooler weather changes the entire personality of being home.
Suddenly the blanket has authority.
The coffee has responsibilities.
The couch is making persuasive arguments.
And going back outside after dark feels like a proposal requiring committee approval. ππ
When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing βOld Corn Liquor,β a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in.
The joy on their faces says it all.
Ever explain a perfectly reasonable choice like someone requested a bibliography? π
Yeah. We should probably talk about that.
Come check in with me. This one might sound familiar. βοΈπ§‘
#CheckInThursday#OverExplaining
Youβve moved into a neighborhood in the Star Trek universe. π
Your neighbors could be ANY alien species.
Are you choosing peace and quiet or risking an interstellar incident over the property line? π
Who gets to live next door?
#StarTrek#CloneStarPodcast
Thursday check-in π§‘
What would make today 10% better?
More coffee?
Less noise?
A walk?
A canceled obligation?
Someone mysteriously appearing with snacks?
We're not rebuilding the entire week.
We're making one small adjustment.
I love when someone gets excited explaining something they know really well.
Suddenly you're getting the complete history of mushrooms, movie scores, trains, birds or a Star Trek episode you innocently mentioned.
Please continue.
Enthusiasm is excellent storytelling. ππ§‘

Okay. Todayβs the big one.
STAR TREK: ZERO POINT #1 arrives today. This book will run parallel to our main STAR TREK title.
But itβs more than that.
When @heatherantos.bsky.social & I were coming up with who could write this second book, @charliejaneanders.com was my first choice. A-1.
