🔬 This new study aims to develop a convenient simulation-based method for quantitative analysis of multi-element bulk mineral samples, particularly when suitable physical standards or previously measured standard libraries are not readily available.

🔬The authors of this new paper held a curriculum design workshop with Wet-Lab Scientists, BioImage Analysts, Bioinformaticians and HPC engineers to determine what motivated wet-lab researchers to learn HPC, and what skills they needed to run BioImage analysis workflows.

📣 In this new Rapid Publication, the authors explain that when imaging battery materials, finding the optimal imaging conditions is challenging. A method to overcome these is the ‘sweet spot’ imaging approach in a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM).

The authors show that application of this approach leads to more successful segmentations for both academic and industrial research and development. "Recommended conditions for low kV ‘sweet spot’ imaging of battery materials" by Ria Mitchell et al is free-to-read here > doi.org/10.1111/jmi....

doi.orgRecommended conditions for low kV ‘sweet spot’ imaging of battery materialsThe characterisation of battery raw materials is imperative to understand the constituents that will eventually become manufactured cells, lately intensified because of the continuously evolving deve...

🔬This review examines the boundary formed between a modified probiotic and its biological environment. Instead of considering only what a surface coating is made from, the authors examine how the interface is constructed, how it changes over time and how these changes influence probiotic function.

📣The Journal of Microscopy is pleased to announce a new special issue - Imaging and Mechanobiology: novel tools to investigate forces in living systems. The issue will be guest edited by Constadina Arvanitis, Mariana De Niz and Peter Dluhy from Northwestern University, USA.

📣Open access agreement for authors at eligible German institutions! Corresponding authors from German institutions can publish their own primary research and review articles open access in the Journal of Microscopy under the Wiley DEAL agreement at no direct cost.

AC-SECM (i.e. an electrochemical microscopy technique) oxygen-consumption mapping showed stronger oxygen depletion over pyrrhotite than pyrite under chloride-free conditions, while chloride exposure reduced this contrast through sulfide surface modification.

🔬In this new open access study, root stiffness is measured in a gentler way using Brillouin microscopy. This method, combined with a specially designed, 3D-printed chamber, allows the root to remain in its growth environment and continue growing.

🔬In this new paper, the authors show how a versatile, quantum-grade confocal microscope enables spatial mapping and comprehensive optical characterization of quantum emitters through emission intensity, rate, and photon-correlation measurements.

The system facilitates investigations of emission dynamics, photostability, and environmental interactions, while flexible LabVIEW-based control enables seamless hardware integration, system upgrades, and automated data acquisition and analysis.

🔬In this new paper, the authors describe how an improved Brillouin–Raman micro-spectroscopy platform enables simultaneous mechanical and chemical mapping of soft materials at micrometre resolution, using a shared confocal pinhole to acquire spectra from 0.1 GHz to 100 THz per point.

"Brillouin–Raman micro‐mapping of silicone‐hydrogel contact lenses: Revealing chemical and mechanical heterogeneities" by Alessandra Anna Passeri et al will appear in the upcoming "9th International BioBrillouin Conference" special issue. The paper is free-to-view here > doi.org/10.1111/jmi....

🔬In this new open access paper, the authors describe napari-lattice which is an open-source tool that streamlines the path from terabyte-scale lattice light-sheet (LLSM) and oblique-plane microscopy (OPM) data to biological insight.

📣 Open Call for Papers: The 21st International Microscopy Congress (IMC21) 2026! The Journal is pleased to announce a new special issue featuring papers from contributors to #IMC21 2026. The special issue will be guest edited by our team of Scientific Editors. Submission deadline: 26 February 2027

📣 Come and say hello at stand #452 at #IMC21 to chat with our Editors and staff about publishing in the journal, open access options, and how we can help share your microscopy research with the wider community. We look forward to seeing you there!

🔬In this new paper, the authors show that across renal and non-renal TEM datasets, WAFMGAN improves numerical stained-domain distribution matching, structural-consistency metrics, and output-level frequency agreement while enhancing the readability of unstained TEM images.

🔬Open-source optical autofocus module (“openAF”) for light microscopy was implemented with a multimode-optical fibre-coupled LED as a convenient low-cost light source in this new open access paper. Using a novel method to independently quantify autofocus system performance via 2D autocorrelation

analysis of astigmatic images of fluorescent nanobeads, the authors show that, after correcting for optical power fluctuations, this LED-based system can provide axial stability with a standard deviation below 10 nm for > 45 minutes from a cold start and can maintain focus for hours.
