Everything's quite new here at #bsky, so perhaps a quick intro could be useful. Abt science, published this book recently (with 2 colleagues): An attempt at a theoretically plausible evolutionary trajection of a world with a little culture to a world where culture is human nature 1/n

Difficult to evaluate AI use these days. Winner in photo contest accused of cheating. Is AI destroying the concept of authenticity in many cultural domains? What, if anything, is the value of AI generated "art"? www.bbc.com/news/article...

Interesting, what many researchers have joked about for quite a long time (but with a serious tone) has now happened at arXiv, submissions per time has become limited.

> an increase in thin papers of narrow scope, as well as ‘salami’ papers, where a single work is broken up and submitted as a set of smaller papers. There is also a marked increase in dense, AI-written papers. AI tools are making it easy for authors to flood arXiv [and others with] low-value papers.

New paper 🍼📄 ManyBabies 3 is out (open access, registered report in Developmental Science). 30 labs, 33 languages, 839 infants set out to replicate a textbook finding: 7-month-olds learn abstract rules from speech (@garymarcus.bsky.social et al., 1999). We didn’t find it. 🧵

Using a simple delta rule (Rescorla-Wagner) tweaked so that the associative strength of the common elements is weighted by its exposure-dependent activation we can simulate our results, showing latent inhibition, and its reversal:

Data comes from photographs collected during 319 observations days, from 9 years, from seven goshawk territories around Stockholm. Here is one of the young goshawks from the study. 3/4

A benefit of studying urban goshawks, they are used to people making observations possible of this most often shy species. And, here's the abstract: 4/4

Main result is that play in young goshawks follow a developmental curve, kicking in at 45 days of age, peaking around 60 days, and then vanes off after 75 days of age. 2/4

Ig-noble-winner next year? "The answers were unambiguous: self-centred men who are argumentative, stubborn, disagreeable and unempathetic are much more likely to own a high-status car such as an Audi, BMW or Mercedes."

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“Why do BMW and Audi owners often seem to drive like idiots? Is it the car that makes them behave aggressively behind the wheel, or are specific types of people drawn to such cars as well being more likely to break traffic regulations? Research at the University of Helsinki provides some answers.”

This must be one of the prettiest places in Colombia, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta of n Colombia, such a hotspot for endemism. Fortier et al (doi.org/10.3417/2025...) say 164 plants are endemic here (above 1700m) - the largest list of SNSM endemics to date! Photo July 2026. #naturephotography

This is a good time for UK institutions to start rethinking their genAI use in education. It always is! We must decide what kind of instruction we want our students to receive: one that quickly dumps them into an illusory, ephemeral work sphere, or one that gives them the knowledge they'll need.
