Johnnie Johnstone

About halfway through this as life keeps interrupting my reading, but, it's sent me into a deep trawl of @theclientele.bsky.social Not that I'm ever far away from that anyway. And much like @robinallender.bsky.social's wonderful podcast, it's making me love them even more, if that's possible...💙

Ruin a band name by adding a letter. West Coast Pop Tart Experimental Band Small Faeces

Genuinely curious. Was it against the law in the Sixties for bands not to record a version of ‘Hey Joe’?

#NowPlaying An absolute gem.

I’m building my own personal canon of Bookstore Music & these four records rank extremely highly: • Can, Future Days • Cindy Lee, Diamond Jubilee • Movietone, Day and Night • Mary Lattimore, Hundreds of Days

#NowPlaying Alongside Bill Fay, the loveliest person I ever interviewed. An absolute delight, despite being fully aware that he was nearing the end.

Amazing photos of life on the Norfolk Broads, from 1886 (!) Peter Henry Emerson

I love the Beatles but here are 5 Fabs originals I can’t deal with: Piggies All Together Now Don’t Pass Me By Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite! I Me Mine

A fascinating listen, and I hadn’t ever heard Johnny Rivers version of Positively 4th Street (Sweetheart of the Rodeo vibe), so here it is… youtu.be/YR6wtzIUtcs?...

Picked a year at random… 1985.

#new2me26 Nara Leão - Dez Anos Depois I think it was @philk282.bsky.social that alerted me to this reissue. A slow, sultry Brazilian album that occasionally drifts into Nick Drake realms of beauty. She was exiled in Paris when this was made, and it has a lovely French undercurrent throughout.

I couldn't wait! I've just finished reading this wonderful book. As @johnniejohnstone.bsky.social rightly says "This is the story of the greatest pop group of the last thirty years" You really need to read this book & then immerse yourself in the beautiful music of @theclientele.bsky.social 🎶

The midway point between the end of the First World War and the present day is now…

While I adore both The Lark Ascending and Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, my favourite Vaughan Williams is his 3rd Symphony, “Pastoral”. It’s all beautiful, but I particularly love the 4th movement, Lento. Sublime. youtu.be/hqg-ed5PlwI?...

Right, Tone Loc, Bentley Rhythm Ace, the Macc Lads. When was the last time you heard their names?

Brazilian version 1.0. Had to be honest with myself, hence the multi-Milton air.

Thanks to Camilla Aisa for her very kind review in Shindig! magazine.

The Clientele have been my discovery of the last couple of years thanks to you (and, to be fair, other people too including Andy Miller of @backlisted.bsky.social). How did I not know them before? I made this of your 15, hope that's ok open.spotify.com/playlist/2zX...

Publication Day! #ClienteleTop15 1. Monday’s Rain. For me, the Clientele’s very essence distilled into one song. Mysterious, opaque, and according to Alasdair MacLean, “microtonally out of tune”, it is a song to fall in love with, to disappear into. youtu.be/LdWxMPoH7bc?...

My Top 9 Mary Margaret O’Hara Albums

I have a soft spot for Got To Get You Into My Life by Earth Wind & Fire. I didn’t know it was a Beatles tune until many years later.

NME's Singles of the Year 77-92 worth a look too: Pretty Vacant Ever Fallen in Love The Eton Rifles Love Will Tear Us Apart Ghost Town The Message Billie Jean Love Wars Never Understand Kiss Sign o' the Times The Mercy Seat She Bangs the Drums Groove Is in the Heart Higher Than the Sun The Drowners

#ClienteleTop15 2. Through The Roses. This is the point at which I realise I’ve omitted to include much of the more avant-garde material from IANTA. Instead I’ve plumped for this trembling ballad, exquisitely arranged by James Hornsey and Alicia Macanas. youtu.be/_L7YvAGfw5M?...

German Edition Vol 2 of 3.

#ClienteleTop15 3. Losing Haringey. As if you needed reminding that the Clientele are not ‘just another band’. Poetry. Surrealism. The power of memory. You could live inside this song. youtu.be/_tKHlZeT-As?...

Watching Full Circle with Michael Palin. Utterly magnificent.

German Edition Volume 1.

Really enjoying this at the moment.

9 TV series that meant a lot to me.

I’ve only just found out that both CS Lewis and Aldous Huxley died on the same day as JFK was assassinated. And I’ve posted this, even though presumably everyone else knew that already.
