I think woman and monster trope works because you flip an (unfortunate) expectation of a man being overbearing and violent but oh! it’s revealed they’re actually soft and loving and kind despite the prejudices and expectations of others a monster girl needs a different angle, but with that said:

I think for a monster girl to work she HAS to be truly monstrous / unconventional and stay that way or at least actively dangerous in a way the guy is okay with world expects an “ugly” woman specifically to be evil and bad but turns out she’s a sweetheart, shrek understood this

why does every other conversation I have with ppl my age or younger be like “this thing I liked isn’t happening much right now” and they preceed to go “um… yes it is? you aren’t looking hard enough” and then give me exactly two examples out of 100

on a related note, I find the discussion around Phil & Travis Knight both important but off the mark sometimes, like it’s either ppl glazing travis for doing one good thing with his money or thinking Laika is Disney levels of evil for having animation studio horror stories, all because of them

personally, as a lifelong portlander, the whole thing is defined by the fact that Laika would not exist without Phil’s money, but Phil & Travis would still have their money and be stationed here in portland without Laika i’d still have to see ppl glazing Nike Jordans, but without our animation hub

that said, i’m glad ppl are critical of them and willing to keep an eye on their practices, I just want ppl to understand that laika is the center of our animation industry, & because it operates at a loss, pressure and vocality are more effective and helpful than boycotting if anything goes awry
