one more rung on the ladder of "you're not protesting properly/politely" where criticism itself is frowned upon

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

A bit of a turning point. Creators of all types of media are no longer allowed to criticize America's wealthiest people.

I haven't cut anyone off. But I have stated many times that if my retired parents, and others of that generation, want to do the 1-3hr drive to visit, they're very welcome. And perhaps I suggested expecting us, working 40-50hrs a week with primary aged kids to make the same drive is...infeasible.

leon@leyawn.bsky.social

why do we bash "dead beat" children for not being there for their parents but we never question if the parent has bad vibes? or if they're just unpleasant to be around?

Every Brad Bradford endorsement is like, "Toronto used to be a utopia with zero problems. Now it is only fit for the most violent of rats, where sentient crack pipes murder you in dark alleys and feral child gangs feast on the Lululemons of my yoga mom group. Brad will fix this. I live in Whitby."

Thinking about the three Boynton books I've been reading on a loop for the last month. Trying to find the words to tell this guy how I feel about his parenting.

I have a love/hate relationship with King, like many people. The first two 'squares' of my homebrew Stephen King Bingo card are: "The villain is a woman, and boy is she ugly!" and "Fat People are Bad!" I recently started filling in my gaps in his work, assisted by the podcast 'Just King Things'.

Emily C. Hughes@emilyhughes.bsky.social

it was important for me to call this out. King, though I love him, has been getting away with nakedly hateful fatphobia for half a century now and the majority of readers seem to have handwaved it, but I can't. (a shout out to @megelison.bsky.social, though, who's been banging this drum for years)

Listening to the podcast is great because it helps me realize I haven't been taking crazy pills when I have issues with a King book. It helps to not have King stans jumping down my throat when I make a comment about things like how weirdly detailed his descriptions of pre-pubscent kids can get.

someone better than me at many things could set this to Tom Waits' "I Don't Wanna Grow Up"

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.

I'm in one of those weird spots in Toronto where I can't tell if this an unsigned public space (gated, no locks), private property, or something in between. Drinking a coffee, reading my book, and wondering if I'm going to be run out of here at any moment. Really nice place for it.

Five years between "We can't do this again without Neil," to "Fuck it, print the money" Tour is ghoulish and pointless and you can draw a straight line from that mentality to a Bradford endorsement. (I say this as a long time Rush-Tolerator and sometimes fan)

What’s your best Rush hot take?

"The President has been swallowed by a Whale. Only one man on land or sea has the experience to rescue him. This summer, life isn't better down where it's wetter because: OLYMPUS HAS WHALEFALLEN"

Christopher Jones@christopherjonesart.com

I really want #Whalefall to do well enough at the box office that some studio executive thinks it would be a good idea to make a sequel. "How can a guy get swallowed by a whale... Twice??"

After I read about this on reddit (shh), I went to Steam to see if I was excluded. Before I could search, I saw my "hot new releases" tab had a couple obvious adult games, so i clicked to get a baseline for what I was allowed to see. Here's the twist. They show it. All of it. Full penetration.

Dave Gilbert@wadjeteyegames.com

We are aware that Steam has classified Nighthawks as an adult game and has excluded it from searches (and delisted it entirely in certain countries). We are working on it. Valve is under the impression that this game is way sexier than it actually is.

90% of my coworkers work but don't live in Toronto and they rabbit on about crime and The Horrors of The City. "I won't take transit", "People get killed all the time", "Communists run The City." Then they run away to their suburban oasis (Durham?!) and vote against making anyone's lives better.

Glyn Bowerman@glynbowerman.bsky.social

Honestly, fuck your feelings. Canadians *think* Toronto is some violent cesspool because: •Rightwing politicians campaign on it, it’s a convenient straw-man •Rightwing media pushes their agenda •THEY DON’T LIVE HERE Inform yourselves or shut your mouth.

I lived in Oshawa for 15 years. I go back there frequently. Everyone is happily remembering *around* the fact that what problems exist in Toronto, exist almost everywhere. And the suburbs don't even get any of the benefits of living in a big scawy city.

Friends from overseas are always confused by the lack of proper 'furniture' in Toronto. My response is always along the lines of "The City's biggest fear is that they will build something and then a homeless person uses it." Bathrooms, benchs, shade, water fountains. This is surely at the core.

This is the exact, almost word for word, theory that kneecapped Toronto's street food program years ago. "They have so much less overhead! They'll put me out of business!" Said the allegedly high-end restos in the theatre district of the potential taco/burger/whatever trucks.

Paul F. Tompkins@pftompkins.bsky.social

Was just thinking about Karen Bass being against street vendors and the idea that if vendors set up near a restaurant that is a problem. As if adults are going to a restaurant but see a taco stand first and say “this food is closer so you lose, restaurant”

Why do politicians/elites hate speed and red light cameras? Because they ticket everyone. Including those they "shouldn't". #onpoli #topoli

ngl, that Starbucks has been "vital" to me in the past, but...

Matt Elliott@graphicmatt.com

Councillor James Pasternak, introducing some North York items, highlights his opposition to a development at 75 Billy Bishop Way. He says the "five tall buildings" proposed will "be tearing up vital retail", like a Beer Store, Jolibee, Starbucks and A&W.

New city report notes the Toronto Police Vision Zero Enforcement Team handed out about 14,500 speeding tickets in 2025. Might sound like a lot, but well, compare and contrast.
