Brazil’s election had three winners, says Miguel Lago: Lula, civil society and Jair Bolsonaro, from his jail cell. “Lula’s Final Chapter”: a symposium from @equatormag.bsky.social and @alameda.institute, with Rodrigo Nunes, Anna Raposo de Mello and Juliano Fiori. www.equator.org/articles/bra...

The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.

my last film of the festival. wish i liked it more than i did, but i’m open to doing so: the time to make up your mind about people is never. boxd.it/gYiyN1
went to an animated shorts screening. putting my mini-reviews in a single thread. boxd.it/gY1bmR

no longer worried that i uncritically love everything, now worried that i’m a k-philistine (now with correct link) boxd.it/gX1EEh

i am exactly the kind of modernist/third-worldist dork a Virginia Woolf adaptation set in contemporary Nigeria was made for boxd.it/gTpZtV
morning phone games inspired a relisten of this, one of my favorite songs of 2025. the opening refrain "today is a good day/i feel okay" jumped out at me in light of nailah's recent discussion of depression on social media; that low horizon is so intimately familiar to me. youtu.be/tTJm3CflNCc
would have been the 1980 rerelease of Song of the South (1946), somewhere in or around Arizona’s Verde Valley. i was three at the time and haven’t lived in the area since i was six so no idea about venue and for all i know we drove to Phoenix for it. almost no memory of the film itself, just songs.
First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.
not part of the chicago international film festival so it’s not going in the nested thread, but i saw this tonight: boxd.it/gV7kdp

RIP Sam Chatman
but i also don't want to be used as fodder for the incompetent meaning-leached information extrusion machine. even if they reject them, i want people to evaluate my ideas on their merits, not get them at secondhand compressed into an undifferentiated paste with everyone else's. otherwise why bother?
anti-album as political statement, because none of the above would have been possible without this record: www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-hv...

I'm hopefully taking a six-month work sabbatical to write a book about Pulp! But only if I can hit my goal on Kickstarter. So, please consider backing, or even better share with people who love Pulp as much as I do.
Just launched! Freaks, Mis-shapes, Weeds: A song-by-song exploration of every known Pulp recording, and life. 30 days left to make this happen! www.kickstarter.com/projects/jam...

it is necessary for anyone who wants to understand the twentieth century to see this movie boxd.it/gThnF9
really loved this satirical, vertiginous haitian fable about religion, sexuality, and haiti herself, and its gleeful defiance of repression, violence and hatred. boxd.it/gSo8sf
