I’ve been teaching for 20 years. My first year I would come to school early to photocopy transparencies to use in my classroom overhead projector. Today I came in early for last minute red-teaming of a custom study Gem before shipping it to my students.

These 2 stellar pieces from @techpolicypress.bsky.social are essential for educators thinking through the profoundly new internet our students are experiencing. techpolicy.press/how-ai-drive...

“Perhaps the hardest thing to change now will be breaking the instinct to ‘Google it,’” writes Dia Kayyali, in response to the degradation of the online information landscape. “We need to start asking where we can turn for communication that’s mediated as little as possible by technology.”

I teach 8th grade history and help lead our AI efforts. This is *the* question schools need to be obsessively focused on… students are using it a ton, and even if they’re not, its existence in the information landscape they inhabit is changing how they think and learn. All else is downstream…

The key is, can we teach students to relate to AI as an informed co-producer and not purely as a consumer? Where we can’t, students and instructors alike will be in a weak position vis-a-vis the companies that produce intellectual capital. But fingers crossed that we can.

Adding this too… on the one hand, this blurriness has always been undertheorized in understanding technology’s role in learning, but on the other, the ways these features are being rolled out is already an epistemic and pedagogical challenge that will only grow more difficult this coming school year
