If you have a window with bright, indirect light, there’s really no reason to not have an orchid. Year 2 of this HEB purchase blooming again. They are so much easier to keep alive when they come potted in wood or bark instead of moss. You can water every week without worrying about wet rot.

Purple and gold garden photo. Mystic blue spires salvia and purple kale, and native rudbeckia/coreopsis flowers plus a few squash blossoms. And a volunteer pumpkin coming up in the back corner bed.

I found 3 very hungry pipeline swallowtail caterpillars decimating the Wooly Dutchman’s Pipe in my backyard. Hopefully this means we’ll get to enjoy some beautiful butterflies hanging around the garden this summer (and it entices the Dutchman’s Pipe to go into overdrive putting up new shoots).

More US citizens dead in one plane crash than died in Benghazi

NPR@npr.org

Update: The U.S. military confirmed that all six crew members on an KC-135 aircraft died after the refueling plane went down in western Iraq, raising the U.S. death toll after two weeks of war with Iran.

So I want to know what my fellow Houstonian‘s secret ingredient is for quality charro beans. Mine has been using Miller Lite to break up the fond after sauteing my veggies and pork fat (usually from a pork butt, instead of bacon) before throwing it and my dry seasonings in with the beans.

Actually, my secret is finely chopping a red (or white) potato to add to the beans to thicken up the liquid. I can never add too much chicken/pork/beef stock because the potato starch always balances it out.

It’s a red chili sauce kind of night. Pork shoulder was $0.89 for the first time in forever and I am going to stew down some deliciously spicy chunks of pork this week. #arbol #guajillo

- So what are you serving for Thanksgiving dinner? - AI slop

Davey Alba@davey.bsky.social

NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

The A&M game is hilarious because they gifted 17+ points off of turnovers to a 3-6 team to be down 30-3 before the half, but are also good enough to score 21 unanswered points right after the half and make the game stay competitive.

NEW—US Department of Education sent out standard Out of Office language to employees on Wednesday in light of shutdown. Later yesterday, workers tell me they found someone had updated their auto-responses without consent to a new one blaming Democrats. Version of original on left, updated on right:

It’s still not clear to me if Sam Reich is Robert Reich’s son or if this is just a long college humor/dropout bit. (I refuse to use the most simple of internet search options to resolve this, because it’s funnier not knowing).

What started out as carving out a little space in the sunniest part of the yard for an herb garden has turned into what I can best describe as a pocket food forest. It’s been a great source of a variety of flowers, herbs, and fresh veggies throughout the spring and early summer.
