Whether it's Democrats using a police gym to play basketball or Republicans imprisoning people without due process and sending them to black sites, both sides abuse police resources to achieve their goals.

honestly very excited to see some very serious people get very seriously concerned about the non-commercial use of municipal recreational facilities during non-work hours

"The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't take selfies and post tweets." Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.

The dual state model of fascism seems potentially relevant to how things are playing out wrt to Ukraine now, DOGE meets foreign policy etc

Julia Carrie Wong@joolia.bsky.social

not to freak anyone out or anything but I’ve been reading the Anatomy of Fascism by Robert Paxton and I think the concept of fascism as a model of government featuring a normative state and a prerogative state is potentially going to be useful for thinking about DOGE

NEW: I have spent 9 months examining Louisiana's unique Justice of the Peace system, which hands down thousands of evictions a year and pays its judges almost entirely through filing fees they collect One earned over $400,000 last year Experts say the system is "blatantly unconstitutional"

theguardian.com‘Big business’: little-known court system in Louisiana churns out thousands of evictions – and millions in fees for judgesGuardian investigation: Louisiana’s justice of the peace court system may violate tenants’ constitutional rights as eviction fees boost judges’ incomes

The culture that produced this ad is the same culture that keeps publishing handwringing takes about therapists “pushing” adult children to go no contact with their parents, despite it being well established that childhood sexual abuse is common.

The Rooster@rooster.info

Dr. Amy Acton's campaign is out with a statement:

So much of the anti-woke vibe shift was just a demand by abusers and their allies that the victims of abuse shut up already, laundered into politesse by magazine editors

I’m not a culture writer so I don’t know all the nuances of this stuff but I find culture writing that studiously amd self-consciously avoids spoilers to be annoying and often pointless to read, like if you’re going to write about the thing, please go ahead and write about the thing

it's definitely a fun movie to think about that kind of epistemological and relational question but if you want to think about the woman at the center of it in any kind of concrete or moral way just read bad blood where you don't get distracted by her eyes

I love trying to read an article longer than 250 words on a browser on my phone the constant reloading adds a lovely frisson of danger to the reading experience also it loses my place every time it reloads which is both interactive and disorienting best of all is when the ad tech kills the page dead

it’s cool that technology has figured out a non-verbal way to have a verbal medium communicate that it hates me and I do believe it more viscerally than I would if the publishers of my favorite publications just published the statement, “we hate you for reading our words go watch a video” 10/10

My great-great grandmother got herself and her family on a boat from Odessa to the US after Cossacks beat her husband over the head during a pogrom. He was never the same. It would have looked a lot like this. Disgraceful.

Joel S.@joelhs.bsky.social

This is a pogrom, no different than what the Cossacks did to Jewish communities in the Pale of Settlement.

There’s something a bit bizarre and uncanny about the co-temporality of a high tech, AI-driven genocide in Gaza and this kind of late 19th century pogrom violence with sticks and stones in the West Bank but it’s all coming from the same hateful place and driving toward the same horrific aim.

I don’t have any idea what the solution to the bigger problem for literature is, but it strikes me as completely outrageous that the Atlantic would level such a serious charge against an author without an iota of actual evidence. And no, a black box analysis by another AI program is not evidence.

theguardian.comZimbabwean author Simbarashe Kundizeza denies using AI to write prize-winning storyArticle in Atlantic claims The Blue Fighter was artificially generated, days after it won Caine prize for African writers

there are a lot of things that are going on in the world and most of them are unfathomably bad but if there’s one thing I will not abide it is strangers having a slightly different opinion than me on the issue of the beautiful singer and the terrible store

ok one more thing before i lie down and die: we deserve an isaac chotiner interview with the store owner about whether or not that bird is for sale. isaac, an anxious and frankly overwrought borough looks to you

personally i think it's really great that the shop owner defended himself from the charge of being weirdly hostile and condescending to someone asking whether an item with a price tag is for sale by being weirdly hostile, condescending and evasive to a reporter asking whether the item is for sale

the babahuck@tylerhuckabee.bsky.social

sorry for extending the kelly clarkson discourse for yet another day but not hard to see why she got frustrated with this guy. he's asked three times whether or not the bird is for sale and won't give a clear answer!

can’t believe OpenAI had someone on staff who thought it was appropriate to record everything that people around him said

CNN@cnn.com

OpenAI discovered a “sophisticated recording device” in one of its offices planted by an employee who has been arrested, the company said. https://cnn.it/4dDnIxJ

it’s weird how much people want to use history to deny difference my friends that is not what analogy is for that is just another way to terminate thought

spent a little time thinking about what will happen with the live-streamed footage of a firing squad execution on this internet we have and I don’t think a society comes back from it

View full thread

the propaganda footage of boat strikes in the Caribbean is the direct precursor for this, but I think it will be meaningfully different to have a named individual as the target of a firing squad, esp one who uses a wheelchair

I don’t usually go in much for talk about the soul or psyche of a nation or whatnot but I do think that there is urgency to stopping this from happening on a level that goes beyond the material

this kind of civic celebration of official violence seems designed to implicate as many people as possible in the crimes of the state, which prepares the ground for more violence

It would take an unprecedented effort from the platforms companies and media to suppress the dissemination of the footage, but I imagine they will only wring their hands if even that

one of my favorite Sondheim jokes is when he was like “actually I can write a simple hummable show tune” and then he put it in the mouths of two corny psychopaths where it belonged

I spent a lot of my childhood in Cincinnati deeply invested in Broadway beefs that I only knew about by way of the New York Times arts section it was great

Is there a work of art that was created well before the current era that you feel explains Trump and MAGA and everything better than anything contemporary? For me it’s Assassins (1990) but I’m curious if other people have one.
