That’s a huge if that cedes a lot of ground that I will not surrender. Furthermore, give me a break. The word proceeds the thought. You can’t express an argument unless you also produce the sentences that express the argument. Even entertaining this discussion threatens higher ed.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵

Can miniature donkeys also help grizzled academics?

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Miniature horses and donkeys can serve as therapy animals — and petting or scratching them for just three minutes made teenagers feel less anxious, sad and lonely, according to a new study. https://wapo.st/4hdSgqS

In my perfect world, I would meet a miniature donkey named Donkey Hoetee, and he would listen to me recite my to-do list as I pet his head between his ears and give him a carrot. Then he would nod and tell me with a cute little bray, “you got this, friend!”

Look: I’m sure that when legislators pass bills funding infrastructure projects they don’t also stipulate to the engineers what building materials are safest based on their opinions. If you want the best higher ed, you have to let the faculty experts run it. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

“And now I am passing the grifting on to YOOOOOUUUU!!!!”

President Donald Trump pledged to send every American adult $5,000 if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections. The promise, made at the GOP's midterm convention in Dallas, could cost over $1 trillion and would require congressional approval.

There is a huge difference between Joan Didion and ChatGPT: as far as I know, none of Joan Didion’s writing was chock full of inaccuracies, has been used to threaten workers’ jobs, nor has it resulted in deaths by suicide.

These are residential trade schools. The article says students will get hands-on education for 2 years, will learn in a workplace for 2 years & they won’t have to memorize useless things. But the broad gen ed is the foundation of college. How are students getting that? Without it, it ain’t college.

A new model in Vermont emphasizes hands-on learning while stripping away frills like gyms and meal plans that increase costs. Other newly created institutions are also reimagining college. n.pr/4hZWlku

There are lots of other things in this article I take umbrage with, but will leave it at this: the article shows the efforts to turn all education into job training are alive and well.

The Atlantic needs to seek permission to republish this.

Andrew Baker was also a “token black professor” at Bates College. But his perspective on the events Tyler Austin Harper recounts in his Atlantic cover story is very different. Read Baker’s side of the story online today. newsletter.thedriftmag.com/p/racism-and...

My current job is a dream come true in many ways for me. But at my previous job, I and many of my colleagues took notes at meetings in anticipation of lawsuits.

I sat through faculty meetings where I made sure to take notes in anticipation of lawsuits.

Academics who write during term (i.e. while teaching): 1. How many classes do you teach per term? 2. How often do you write (e.g. once/wk, when you can, etc.)? 3. When do you write (e.g. weekend, morning, at night, etc.)? 4. What's the biggest barrier(s) to you writing? 5. Do you have any tips?

I assert that club sports, travel teams, e.g. do more harm that good to families while being a huge cash grab for the “youth sports industry.”

I'm attending a digital humanities event in Montreal. There was a keynote on AI and something about the talk made me wonder if it had been written by Claude. I said as much in the Q&A. As I posed the question, the speaker shifted, looking slightly uncomfortable. What he said next shocked the room +
