NEW from me: Last year, Mark Carney set a goal to double Canada's non-US exports by 2035. Today, he's already halfway there In response to Trump's tariffs & threats, Canadian businesses, consumers, & even tourists are taking difficult steps to decouple from the US🧵 www.apricitas.io/p/how-canada...

Just saw Klara and the Sun in theatres—it takes Ishiguro's weakest book and further waters it down into a Hallmark-level story. Total lost opportunity to say anything interesting about AI or the loneliness epidemic; I think Taika Waititi completely lost his fastball letterboxd.com/josephpolita...

Yep, just to add even more color for how bad this is—there are tons of American made vehicles that are basically only exported to Canada because they’re too expensive for most consumers in Mexico and too big for consumers in Europe/Asia. One of endless reasons it was dumb to start this trade war.

"U.S.-built vehicles accounted for 28.4% of new-vehicle sales in Canada during the first half of 2026, down sharply from 35.4% in the first half of 2025 and an average of ~40% in preceding years." Canadians aren't buying your stuff anymore. 🇨🇦

The Canadian government's push to reorient supply chains away from the US has boosted real investment in transportation and utility infrastructure, which is up 42% since 2024 That's been just enough to offset the drop in factory construction, but Canada will need more investment to decouple further

America's trade war with Canada has obviously backfired, both economically and politically. But Trump is likely to double down on it after the midterms. When he does, Canadians will be thankful they aren’t quite as dependent on America as they used to be.

Meanwhile, Canadian trade with the US is dropping across several key sectors. Exports of vehicles, wood products, and metals have all fallen as they've been hit with US tariffs, while counter-tariffs and consumer boycotts have lowered imports of US vehicles & consumer goods.

There's perhaps no clearer example of Canadians protesting with their wallets than the massive drop in visits to America Canadian tourist spending in the US has fallen 24% since 2024, mirrored by a 24% rise in non-US tourism spending.

Canada's non-US exports are near record highs, up 42% over the last year alone. Rising energy and gold prices have provided major tailwinds, but this export growth is occurring across a wide array of destination countries and industries.

Compared to 2024, Canadian exports to the UK are up 195% (mostly gold), exports to China are up 52%, exports to the EU are up 42%, and exports to other countries are up 18% The country's non-US exports of energy, minerals, food, aircraft, and consumer goods are all rising.

Canada's economy remains deeply tied to America's—most provinces trade more with the US than with other parts of Canada or other countries—but Canada's trade reliance on the US has fallen dramatically during Trump's 2nd term, hitting the lowest levels in 30 years.

I get the feeling that Sweeney resents the fact that he's making video games that are, at least in part, artistic products that people buy for emotional reasons, and that he wishes people would just treat Fortnite like it's productivity software

In fact, Texas' solar generation has grown so much that it's surpassed California to become America's largest solar-producing state Texas already had a heavy lead in utility-scale solar, but has now passed California even when you include rooftop

Put aside the economic stupidity of the Trump admin's Canada tariffs, the political stupidity is just unbound. The election is in less than two weeks. The cake is baked. No Maine voters are changing their mind because you exempted blueberry producers for a week.

seeing Elon go on a multi-day crashout about Talarico has really highlighted how psychologically devastating it would be to Republicans if they lost Texas. So much of their self-identity is tied to repping Texas as the anti-California and would be shattered if the state even tipped blue.

strongest endorsement I have for the new Elizabeth Holmes doc is that I find most of Nathan Fielder’s work unwatchable because I hate cringe comedy but I still loved this There’s so many reveals that the film has to go “that’s crazy but we don’t have time to address it” several times boxd.it/gRIMjN

It’s a miracle of pure dumb luck that this person’s gun jammed before he was able to carry out the attack, but this stuff is a symptom of all the of the rising anti-Indian racism online that desperately needs to be pushed back against

My family and I were worshipping at our Hindu temple in Aurora on Sunday when a white supremacist attempted a mass shooting targeting Indian Americans. I'm grateful to those who prevented a tragedy, but we must all come together to confront the hatred that put so many innocent lives at risk.

We're in totally unprecedented territory when it comes to computer prices; they're up a record 10% over the last year alone in data released this morning (and that's after adjusting for quality improvements, which usually are enough to drive steady *de*-flation)

NEW: CPI inflation rose to 3.7% year-on-year in data released this morning, hitting the second-highest level since 2023 while increasing 0.6% month-on-month Core CPI inflation rose to 2.6% year-on-year, increasing 0.3% month-on-month

NEW from me: Over the last 4 years, America has lost more than 200k jobs in creative fields like publishing, film, TV, or graphic design. It's the worst stretch for arts jobs outside of recessions. How much is AI to blame? And can the arts' business model survive?🧵 www.apricitas.io/p/ai-and-the...

Ridership on the Bay Area's Caltrain also continues rising in the wake of the route's electrification, with passenger counts up 31% since this time last year! Caltrain is now moving more people than it did in equivalent months pre-COVID, a massive rarity among US rail systems

Another major transit story this year has been the steady rebound in LA Metro rail ridership since the opening of the first D-line extension Though still well below record highs, LA Metro moved 6.6M riders last month, up 12% from this time last year

Musk advocating for Quebec separatism then following it up by saying Alberta & Saskatchewan should leave too gives away this is just about dissolving Canada for being lib, but I'm glad he's too dumb to realize it undermines separatists' chances by further associating them with right-wing Americanism

Le Québec devrait devenir indépendant et se séparer du Canada, selon Elon Musk. Dans une publication sur X, le patron de Tesla et de SpaceX a aussi dit que l’Alberta et la Saskatchewan devraient faire de même.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

The US tech sector continues bleeding jobs in official data released today—overall, employment decreased by 17k last month and is down 69k over the last year That's nearly as bad as the worst of the 2024 tech-cession, and much worse than the 2022 boom or even pre-2020 norms

American factory construction inched down to the lowest level since 2022 in official data released today as CHIPS Act projects finish and tariffs weigh on nearly all industries Total US factory construction is down 33% from its 2024 highs and 20% over the last year alone
