Feels like every day we are hearing bad news about the humanities, but this stat is pretty shocking. Graduate research production has roughly declined by half in 10 years.

Humanities dissertations have fallen by 49 percent since 2015, compared with a drop of 4.5 percent in the social sciences, according to a new analysis of nearly 445,000 dissertations in these two fields over 65 years. Explore the data: https://chroni.cl/4yxUZ4S

Besides the austerity and chaos, I’m not seeing a lot of incentive being created to extend the life of associations and societies dedicated to disciplinary continuity. Where are the next generation of grad students supposed to turn for support?

This is effectively the beginning of the end of the best public media production culture in the world. Brexit destroyed the entire country.

NEW: BBC confirms BBC Three, BBC Scotland, Radio 4 Extra channels to go, but there is an even more worrying development. After all the cuts so far, the BBC is not even HALF WAY to its £500m savings target. Some big calls to come... www.theguardian.com/media/2026/o...

RIP - much of my public research is guided by Gramsci and the interpretation of his work in the Critical Pedagogical tradition. I’ve called upon Thomas’s important scholarship to think organizational strategy through on a number of occasions.

A truly sad day for Gramsci studies with the news that Peter Thomas has died. For reasons indicated at the beginning of the commentary, here is a hastily put together tribute. He is survived by Sara Farris and their two children and my sincerest condolences and deepest sorrow remain with them.

The professor is Carolyn Marvin, one of the founders of media history research in the US, one of my subfields. Now leading the resistance against robot replacement of human labor.

It is great to see the broad history of college radio and its connection to public media getting robust coverage (even if resulting from defunding and its ripple effects), and I'm happy to contribute to the historical perspective in this piece. www.cjr.org/feature/all-...

Looks like two new university book contracts are on their way before 2026 year's end. One connected to the Library of Congress work, the other to my political economic/public media research. More to announce in the coming months.

For lack of clear rules about the use of AI in classrooms, it’s difficult to steer students toward slow, close reading and analysis. So I’m pretty sure that I’m gonna return to reading together in class and bluebook-style assignments next year.

“Sitting around and reading books and talking about them.” Sounds quaint, but it was the best practice for the first 2300 years of education, it’s only really changed recently.

The professors and instructors who turn classrooms back into spaces for reading and discussion, are going to leave the biggest legacies in this world. Everyone one else will disappear into LLM wallpaper proxies and derivatives.
