We've launched a crowdfunder to help us publish next year's books, and we'd love your support. There's a reward at every level, from backlist lucky dips and slightly battered misprints to new books, a whole year of books, and one-to-one feedback on your poems www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/help-broke...

earlier in the week I showed the event poster to my students. I asked them why a book with a bird on the cover might be called Volatile. I made them look up the word volatile in the OED online. you should too.

stigmaria — the fossilised remains of the root structure of a 30 metre high tree that lived 300 million years ago. found in the river Aire near Leeds yesterday.

a creative writing student arrived late for a supervision meeting this morning, and talked exitedly about cyberpunk, having read Neuromancer over the summer, for so long it made every other meeting also run late. the future is here, it’s just not fully workladed.

a friend in Edmonton has sent me a beautiful photo of my book p a u s e. in front of the river which graces the book’s front cover —kisiskâciwani-sîpiy, a river so strong it’s indigenous name persists in the English word Saskatchewan

my entire summer has been taken over by the fever of a new project which is great but unexpected. shoving aside all other projects. anyway, here’s a sonnet:

for the first time in the entire history of the internet, I stumble upon a story about the obscure corner of the world in which I was born. literally, the corner. where Spa Springs Rd meets Ruggles Rd. left when I was 8. had no idea there was an actual spa at Spa Springs. until just this minute.

In "Wilmot Springs: Nova Scotia’s Elixir Vitae," Colby Gaudet writes about Nova Scotia’s 19th-century Spa Springs, which offered natural mineral cures and retreats before fading into obscurity. niche-canada.org/2026/09/10/w... #envhist #cdnhist #histmed #novascotia

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Saint Paul’s as a warehouse is pretty accurate. the money to rebuild the cathedral after the Great Fire of London came primarily from a special tax on coal entering the Port of London. enacted by Parliament and King Charles II, this continuous duty on imported coal funded decades of construction

private gifts and contributions from wealthy citizens also helped supplement the massive building costs, which totaled over £1.1 million by the time the project was completed in 1711. the former wharf building in the photo now houses a pub named after the diarist Samuel Pepys, who witnessed the fire

Pepys wrote: “the wind mighty high and […] and every thing, after so long a drought, proving combustible […] The houses, too, so very thick thereabouts, and full of matter for burning, as pitch and tarr, in Thames Street; and warehouses of oyle, and wines, and brandy, and other things.”
